Daybreak studios (Formerly SOE) are breathing old life into Everquest 1, by Starting all over again with a new progression server called Ragefire. In essence, EQ1 as it was at launch, On March 16, 1999. As players complete raids,(which are not going to be instanced!) the game will progress through the expansion content as bosses are defeated.

When the server is opened, only zones, classes, and races that existed when EverQuest first launched will be available, with some exceptions. Paineel and the Hole will be open. The Temple of Solusek Ro will be open. Everyone will start at level 1. There is no tutorial, characters can not transfer to this server, and Heroic Characters are not available to be redeemed. When raid targets are defeated, they will be broadcast across the server. When all of the raid targets in an expansion are defeated, a countdown begins. For EverQuest, Kunark, Velious, Luclin, and Planes of Power, this countdown will be six months. For Gates of Discord and all following expansions, this countdown will be three months. Polls are scheduled to start every two weeks, on every other Monday. May 4th was the most recent, May 18th will be the next, and so on. If the countdown timer ends with at least a full 168-hour week left before the current poll ends, the current poll will be activated. If there is less than a full week left in the current poll, the next one will be activated. When a poll is active, you will go to a Priest of Discord and say 'vote.' If you're within 21 levels of the current level cap, you are allowed to vote. When the poll ends, if more people voted 'yes' to the next expansion than 'no,' the next expansion will open and the cycle begins again.
Source: https://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/ragefire-poll-results-and-beta-information.220107/ This is awesome. Star Wars Galaxies next please.
It will be interesting, especially when the new players realize you need to actually travel the world to do things because there is no fast travel mechanism in classic EQ from what I remember until the pok came out.
so what's going to happen to project 1999
so what's going to happen to project 1999
Daybreak signed a contract with them in order to avoid future litigation. They basically have to steer clear from their content release cycle but it's pretty much "officially sanctioned". http://www.pcgamer.com/everquest-fan-project-given-blessing-by-daybreak/
WoW needs to do this.
Yes they do, I'd love to storm ICC again at content or some of the BC raids.
Shame you have to be subscribed to try it. I would have tried it otherwise
Blizzard is fucking retarded for not doing this. They'd get a lot of subs back, even for a brief amount of time, but only thanks to the nostalgia factor, if they'd do this. And all they have to do is just rework some code so it would work on modern server code, they've got everything else ready.
I hope Blizzard does something like this with WoW, I'd love to go through Wrath of the Lich King again.
Could you imagine reliving the pre-wotlk zombie event? Probably the most fun I've ever had in WoW. Either getting groups to fight off the hordes of zombies, or destroying cities as a horde of zombies. A lot of people hated it, but I could never understand why. Everything else they've done pre-expansion has been scripted/timed crap. Blizzard never learns honestly.. But I can see EQ getting a lot of veterans back to it if this is successful. I might even resub.
Star Wars Galaxies next please.
Amazing, re-living a game that gets progressively worse each update. Re-experiencing guilds shutting down and ghost towns being scattered across planets, while game veterans in the name of prophets foretell the upcoming disaster and being doomed to fate.
