MPs have given initial support to the idea of England adopting an official national anthem.
God Save the Queen, the national anthem for the UK as a whole, is currently used for England during most sporting events.
However, Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins believes England needs its own anthem and presented his case in the House of Commons as a ten minute rule motion.
His English National Anthem Bill was adopted by the House.
The idea will be debated again at a second reading on 4 March.
The bill would bestow a responsibility on the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to hold a consultation across the UK, and Mr Perkins suggested there could even be an "X Factor style programme" to select a song.
Kind of surprised, I would have expected England to be the most pro-union part of the UK.
Not to say this is anti-union, but it's hard to believe an English national anthem won't be used by people like the BNP.

Go on home Immigrants Go on home ~ :v:
We already have one, just need to make it official

I'm more surprised that England DOESN'T have one.
I say go for it.
This makes sense because, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland all have their own National Anthem
England and Northern Ireland don't have their own as far as my knowledge goes
Jerusalem by William Blake sort of already is an unofficial one

Have you got no fucking homes of your own?
[sp]Why am I playing along? I'm cross English / Northern Irish[/sp]
As a midwestern American who has no fundamental understanding of UK politics or customs, I'd expect something like this from Scotland more than anything. I mean whats more British/English than God save the Queen?

God Save the Queen is the national anthem of the UK. Remember that the UK is a country made up of individual countries and as, as an individual country, England does not have its own anthem (unlike Wales or Scotland).

I understand that concept. What I mean is it's called God Save the Queen (or King), and it has been around in one way or another for centuries presumably before the creation of the UK as we see it today. With the figurehead in title having reined from England for I have no idea how long I would assume it would be fitting to be the anthem for England.
Having a different English national anthem is literally pointless. God save the queen is the defacto English national anthem and I haven't even heard of any of the alternatives.

For the same reason that Wales doesn't have God Save the Queen as their anthem (remember that Wales has had the same monarch as England for almost as long). It's a case of identity and differentiating England from the UK.
Scotland doesn't have an official anthem. Can't speak for Wales but Flower of Scotland is used unofficially at football games and shit

most people are in favour of Jerusalem, because it's so different from God Save the Queen
[editline]15th January 2016[/editline]
you've also got Rule Britannia

it's so typically british that we have all of these amazing songs and anthems, and we picked the most drab and boring one to be our anthem

It hasn't; God Save The Queen was (we believe) written after the formation of the UK and was certainly never considered an English national anthem before then. In fact, the union pretty much predates the popular concept of a national anthem - the last time England was an independent country, the idea of having an official song just wasn't a thing.
To be honest, I'd rather not have God save the Queen be the main British national anthem, since I'm an atheist and I don't care for the royal family. I'd prefer it if Rule Britannia or British Grenadiers was our main national anthem
It'll probably be a song about grass, hills and greggs pasties.
there can only be one

I wouldn't mind I Vow to Thee, My Country

'cause it's pretty much Jupiter from The Planets with lyrics

Haven't been to many football, rugby, cricket games i guess?
Rule Britannia rules the stands.
But I'd love '10 german bombers' as the national anthem just for shits and giggles.
If this ever passes then I'll give it a few months until people get offended and try to pull it. Displaying the cross of St.George seems troublesome enough as it is.

We've been using Hen Gwlad fy Nhadau (The Land of my Fathers) since pretty much forever.
The only right answer is Land of Hope and Glory

I think we should change our National Anthem to "Rule Britannia". "God Save The Queen" sounds so depressing and sounds like music for a fucking funeral :v:

Except the king/queen that song is about is of the English monarch.
So why not just have that be the official anthem of England?

Because its a dirge compared to the alternatives
Jerusalem is my favourite

And the monarch of England (and Wales) is also the monarch of Scotland

Most of the stuff this drunken goon said were actually right, holy shit lol.
Should be "I Vow to Thee My Country," without question. Piece was composed by an english musician, doesn't expressly say the word "Britain," and it talks up the country without pining over the royalty or a dead empire, etc.
Also it's really the only tune that matches up in emotional magnitude of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau or Flower of Scotland, because if you're not gotta one-up the neighbors, then why even bother with a national anthem :toot:
