Labor and Greens refuse to support Coalition same sex plebiscite, move to free vote in parliament
The Federal Opposition has sought to steal the march on the Turnbull Government by lodging a motion for a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage in a fortnight.
It is just the latest twist in the marriage debate which looks set to dominate the early weeks of the 45th Parliament.
The Government is determined to press ahead with its bill for a plebiscite, but it risks being rejected by the Senate.
With the Greens and four crossbench senators arrayed against it, the bill now cannot pass without Labor's support, and the Opposition has indicated it might also vote no.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is trying to get on the front foot by lodging a notice of motion with Speaker Tony Smith, outlining his intention to "present a bill for an act to amend the bill relating to
marriage".
As the Government narrowly controls the numbers — and the agenda — in the lower house, the first opportunity for it to be debated would be during private members' business on September 12.
Under the existing rules it could be tabled with an introductory speech, but it might not ever be debated.
But Labor is also trying to change the rules on the way the House of Representatives is run. It has secured the signatures of all crossbenchers for a broader motion to change the standing orders to
have more say over which legislation is debated.
Crossbench MPs Adam Bandt, Cathy McGowan and Andrew Wilkie have voiced concerns over Labor's move and today announced their intention to introduce a cross-party bill to legalise same-sex
marriage.

aren't the liberals basically going 'block the plebiscite and YOU'RE FUCKED'
"If you have a look at the history of bills going through on same-sex marriage, since 2004 there have been 18 bills," he said.
Jasus, it must be a horrible battle to try and get same-sex marriage in Australia if there have been about 18 bills rejected over a decade.
Whatever happens I hope you do get same-sex marriage soon and tell the anti-gay people to go away.

they can't, they have an edge majority (where they have all of the 76 seats needed to form a minority but if an MP drops out, they're fucked), labor could get the bill passed with the support of most of the crossbench and a few rogue lnp mp's crossing the floor
ooh damn

They called themselves Labor in the first place to express solidarity with labor movements in the United States, but also to separate themselves as a political party from the actual labour movements in Australia at the time.

I really hope that if the Labor and crossbench bills fail (very likely), that they vote for the government's plebiscite bill so we can get this over with. Many of them are saying that it would create a platform for bigots, which is kinda true, except that platform is already there. I don't see how attempting to prevent or delay the plebiscite will in any way make that platform disappear (plus it would delay marriage equality reform again - isn't that what this is all about?); that bigotry would rear its ugly head again the next time marriage equality is brought before parliament.
Labor had six damn years in government up until 2013 to pass marriage equality reform, and it's really starting to look like they're upset because it will be the Liberals who will sign it into law and the history books, not Labor. Just politics as usual.
cmon austrailia, we the people of the republic of slippery slope states have gotten same sex marriage
i do find it interesting that only in the US did it take such a nasty theological spin though, elsewhere they still oppose it but they dont go out right and equate it with a very much biblical definition of marriages
