Earlier this year, Microsoft announced the availability of the Surface Hub and began taking pre-orders on July 1st with an expected ship date of September 1st. The company then announced a delay, where the device would not ship until January. Now Microsoft says not only will they raise the price of the device for all new orders, but also that the device will ship during Q1.
When the Hub was announced, it was initially priced at $6,999 for the 55 inch and $19,999 for the 84-inch model, but now the company is going to increase the price of the device for all new orders. Starting today, if you order a 55-inch Hub, it will cost you $8,999. If you purchase the 84-inch version, the price will now be $21,999.
For those who have already ordered the devices, the company will honor the initial price.
From Thurrott:
This is the second time Microsoft has delayed the release of Surface Hub. It was originally expected in September 2015, and Microsoft has been taking preorders since July 1, 2015. But in August, Microsoft delayed the release until January 1, citing the need to adjust its manufacturing capabilities to meet higher-than-expected demand.
This week’s delay is a lot vaguer: Microsoft says it needs time to “build the right sales channel and better assess the market opportunity for this new category.” (That last bit doesn’t suggest higher-than-expected demand.) It is also finalizing its manufacturing plan “with a view towards delivering the best product experience.”
This thing looks fantastic for big businesses, hell maybe even schools.

This is why Microsoft and Windows will always be king in the business world. OSX has little competition in this realm, and simply cannot compete with the Surface line for business users.

Microsoft is king of the business world (part of it) because of backwards compatibility.

SMARTBoards will probably keep that part of the market. 9 grand for a 55in Hub is a little steep, let alone a $4,000 SMARTBoard for some schools.

Sure, partly.

Maybe moreso for universities. I can imagine they'd be able to do a lot more than smartboards.
Not sure how similar they are but these are much cheaperhttp://www.infocus.com/displays/BIGTOUCH-Series
