Tens of thousands of people are demonstrating against the heavy U.S. military presence on the island of Okinawa, Japan.

It's "one of the biggest demonstrations in two decades" against the U.S. military bases on the island, Reuters reports, and comes after an American allegedly raped and killed a local woman named Rina Shimabukuro.

The crowds of demonstrators weathered sweltering heat, brandishing signs with slogans like "Marines, Withdraw" and "Our anger has reached the limit."
They don't want us there
It's an expense to keep them there
The USSR isn't a threat anymore
Why not withdraw?

Russia? China? North Korea?

You honestly believe they'll invade Japan after the US leaves?
Removing a base isn't even removing our alliance.

Still on the front page
It seems like an odd decision for the US to have 70% of their bases on that one island though.

Because a majority don't care or like having the base there? Its a lot more complicated than what you think it us.
A lot of the anti base people are made up of isolationists who have the same thoughts that hard line Trump supporters aim for.

Yeah you can fuck off with the equating me to a Trump supporter. If the locals don't want the base there, then it ought to be removed. We aren't an occupying force.

I'm pretty sure that the central government of Japan has the final say, not some rag-tag protestors.

Well if things go democratically for the people, their government will listen.

It's not about stopping invasions lmao, it's about being a regional presence

I think it's perfectly fine for Japan to wave it's own dick.

He's equating the protesters with Trump supporters, not you.

He didn't specify local protesters. I took "anti-base people" as anyone opposed to it, which I am also.
Not gonna happen. Russia is in big dispte about the Kuril islands and currently increases its military there to secure ressources as well as shelf mining rights, Japan, the US and in gereral the NATO will do fuck all to withdraw THE central ast-Asia military hub no matter what the Islanders say

I thought it was pretty clear he was talking about the Japanese isolationist that are taking part in the anti-base protests, but that might just be me.

Japan is part of the east asian nuclear defense grid against china, russia, and north korea.

It's a joke; China and Russia aren't going to nuke anyone and North Korea is incapable of sending a rocket 20 yards from their coastline.

because it allows for easy joint training and operations? because merely having base there keeps china, nk, and russia in check? because in the event of any conflict will be US armed forces ready to fight instead of having to ship them over from all over?
japan is pretty damn reliable compared to most of the other countries we have bases in so getting rid of it would be plain stupid, especially with article 9 still in effect

what the hell kind of logic is that, especially in terms of military planning?
might as well dismantle all our nukes because it would just be silly if russia or the norks ever nuked anyone right?
