"GODFUCKINGDAMMIT"
We've all had them. If you haven't, you're lying. Those opportunities that pass you by because you were too busy stuffing your fat face with ice cream or you had your back turned to whatever was going on behind you. I know how you feel. We all do. Share your stories of ill timing and missed priorities, and we'll try our best to console you about that one shot that would have won you the county fair or the National Geographic contest.
I guess I'll start it off.
Today, I went to Monday morning football workouts as usual, where we lift weights for an hour and then go do power workouts outside, such as flipping logs and tires, wind sprints, chucking dummies over our heads, etc. Now, I can't exactly participate in the workouts at the moment because I tore a ligament in my shoulder in a tragic tubing accident and thus all I can really do is Therabands and running (and take photos), but I'm a senior and part of the team leadership so I feel obligated to be there. So we go outside after the weightlifting hour and our head coach decides to be different and have us push the assistant coach's huge white pickup around a few blocks (a large chunk of the town I live in, it's only about 800 people), two people each block.
So, we go outside and start doing that, eventually we make it onto a road that leads out into the country, going uphill. The sun starts rising and holy fuck was it golden and beautiful! I turn around and I'm confronted with what would have probably been the photo of the year for our yearbook and a huge part of my portfolio: Four guys in various states of exhaustion helping each other out, pushing this pickup truck up the hill, with the head coach and assistant coach leaning out of the windows encouraging them. Along the road is a corn field that stretches off in the distance, there's a fence and telephone poles on opposite sides of the road that made great leading lines, storm clouds are gathering to the west, and that sunrise I mentioned earlier is throwing beautiful golden light over everything. It symbolized so many things at once. It was magnificent.
I wasn't doing anything except jogging alongside the truck. And I left my D7000 at home.
:suicide:
How's about yous? Give us your tales of woe so we can console you and tell you everything will be alright...
I was in the camera shop playing with the 60D. Suddenly, I saw this little girl on her fathers shoulders holding a balloon. It was such a beautiful shot. One of the best I think I've ever taken. The colours were vivid and her expression was of utter love and care for her father as he glanced back at her with a small smile.
Of course, when I came to look at it in playback - it wasn't there. No memory card. The only one in the shop not to have one.
Also, great thread idea.
sooo many instances in which I, on that rare occasion, didn't have a camera, and something awesome happens.
recently I had a small one where I went to mcdonald's (literally a quarter mile drive from my office, just roll around the block and back). I for some reason always grab my camera and leave it in the passenger seat. This time I just thought "fuck it" and ran off real quick.
sitting in the drive thru line, a chipmunk jumped up on top of a sign that was about window-level to my car, right next to me.
he just sat there
munching on something
mocking me and my cameralessness.
so I order my food all sad I missed that one, get back to my office, park, and a bird lands on my windshield wiper.
and sits there, rubbing it in my face for like 2 minutes straight.
Just today I was driving and I look up and the sky is PITCH black a few miles in front of me even though it's perfectly blue above me. It was really surreal.
I had to get to the doctor and I didn't bring my camera.
Then I keep driving and suddenly I am in the most rain I have ever been in, and I am legitimately scared to be on the road.
Then a few minutes later it pretty much clears up.
New england :v:
But yeah some great photo opportunities were missed
Doing some lightning photos, and after 30 minutes since i got a picture i decide to turn the camera off. And as soon as I do, lightning hits right where it would be in the center of the shot.
I had a good opportunity the other day when the Greeks were doing an Anti-American protest downtown near the covered market. They were protesting Hilary Clinton coming to Greece and formed a peaceful protest. But of course on that day, the one day I had ever done this I left my camera at home not thinking. As I walked around the protest there were so many amazing photo opportunities like a small child holding up a sign with a pigeon perched right on top not giving a single fuck.
Was at a rally hillclimb, had the camera pointed at the marshal stand, turned my back to walk up the hill. Just as that happened the car veered out of control, did a flip and missed the marshals head by an inch. I was facing in the opposite direction.
Luckily.
The photographer beside me caught it.

I haven't been burned too bad by this stuff, but I'm sure to bring my camera wherever I go these days.
I do have a couple, well that I can think of.
So one is when I was recording my new countryside video, there was this lake on the outside of the train. I didn't know you could take pictures while recording so I lost that one.
There was also this other one, planes were heading over the hotel I was staying at for my birthday (both were at same day) and I didn't get a chance to take a photo of one, so more came over, and missed all of them.
Went to IHOP last night for dinner. Didn't bring my camera because I didn't feel like bringing it in, and I didn't want to leave it unattended in the car. There were roosters wandering in the parking lot. Fucking roosters man, taunting me, just 'cause I didn't have my camera.
There's also been those times where I've been to fantastic places and I didn't yet have an interest in photography... places like Jerusalem, New York, Camp Pendleton, etc.
HE IS NAMED ROSS CUMMING.. HAHAHAHA
ROSS HAHAHAAHHAA
Not a huge one, but as a Wisconsinite I don't see bears as often as I'd like (aka I've only seen one bear). The one time a motherfucking goddamned bear (Holy shit!) decided to come trundling through my back yard both of my camera's batteries were dead. Dammit :(

An eccentric neighbor of mine had a pet cougar or a mountain lion or something, and it got loose. My entire town had a WHERE THE FUCK IS MY CAMERA moment as it bounded through back yards. I don't think anyone got a pic, but lots saw it.

That's hella awesome and hella lame at the same time haha. How long did it take to recapture it, and does he still have it?
Best one of mine.
There was a Mc Donald's that was demolished, just the roof was there, over a pile of the former building. But the sign was still up, and out side was a poster that read, " Blast in to win!"
Last Thursday I went to go see OFF! in Shoreditch and at one point in-between songs the singer, Keith Morris, (a pretty small guy) looked up at the bassist, Steve McDonald (a pretty giant dude) and shared a bit of banter away from the mic.
The two of them have been friends ever since Steve was about 11 and the wry smiles they shared with each other right in-front and above me looked fantastic.
If there was any chance I could have survived my camera at that show it would've been such a wonderful shot :(
amazing sunset yesterday; the sky is this pale yellow and blue-purple, the clouds look almost like they're made of spheres everywhere, everything on the ground is lit up magnificently, colours on everything are simply awesome
walk outside to take a photo, remember that my camera has black and white film in it.
:v:
An actual rocket that's supposed to kill people, fuck.
I probably could have taken photos of Irene but I was scared of ruining my camera
super ziplock bag it
I was on a family trip to Disney World last year, and on the bus ride to the Magic Kingdom I noticed this kid peaking over his chair at me. It looked straight out of a promotion for the parks. I was able to take out my cell phone and take this quick blurry photo so I would at least have something, but I really wish I had a better camera and really capture it.

Heh.
2 years ago, I was going to Kuala Lumpur for a trip and I thought it would be a good idea to leave my gear behind and travel light.
Turns out my hotel was the venue for the CIMB squash finals and all of the world top squash players were there. Then I saw millions of photographic opportunity and bought a new lens.
Pretty much every day I spend here in Okinawa, JP without a camera of any kind. There's a mountain range I can see from my Barracks window and some of the best beaches are a 15 minute walk away. Not to mention the town of Kin is like a photographic gold mine.

I could flail my camera around at random pressing the shutter and have a reel of amazing photos.

Japan's got loads of cameras, don't they? I mean, if you're getting paid, you should save up and buy one. Or use film.
This one goes under the category of "wasn't into photography at the time":

This town neighbors mine. It happened while I was in 7th grade. Taking a drive through it immediately after the tornado was probably one of the most unsettling and surreal experiences of my life.

Well, strangely enough I thought something was wrong with my direct deposit after I switched banks a month ago and I wasn't getting paid, but yesterday I realized it was still going in to my old account which luckily I hadn't closed yet.
Basically I've saved every cent of my last 2 paychecks because I was an idiot and now I have $2000 more than I thought I did. Today is a great day.
A few weeks ago a C-17 flew over head. I was in such awe and amazement I didn't even think to run in to grab the camera.
Then a few black hawks flew by just when I thought nothing else would happen.
I was thoroughly pissed.
Wow, there was just this awesome huge spider with a beautiful web right outside
I take my camera and tripod, and I have to balance it carefully on a chair to get it tall enough
then I get my large lights and set everything up, it takes a few minutes
literally the second I press the shutter, he starts to move, so I just get this long exposure of a blur of legs, and then the second shot I take he starts walking away, and now he's gone
I'm gonna take a shower and hopefully he'll be back by the end.
[editline]19th September 2011[/editline]
he went back out and I took a few more shots, but i could barely balance
I'll try it tomorrow with a sturdier chair
When a ambulance flipped 45° and was lieng half on another car. But, at least I had a friend near who took a photo of it. But well... with my camera it would have been even more epic.

No person was damaged, so yes, you can laugh.
