• Nestle keeps bottling water in BC while citizens restricted by drought
Criticism is picking up again over Nestlé bottling B.C. water while wildfires burn across the province and a drought prompts water bans on residential use. Nestlé — the world's biggest bottler of water — currently packages up more than 300 million litres of water from B.C. every year for free. Under new provincial rules, it and other large corporations will have to pay $2.25 per million litres starting in 2016. "It is outrageous that Nestlé can draw limitless amounts of Canada's natural resources to sell for a huge profit while British Columbians are asked to not water our lawns and take shorter showers," reads an online petition from Sum Of Us. source: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/07/10/nestle-water-bc-petition_n_7771404.html?&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063
[editline]14th July 2015[/editline] Absolutely disgusting and no surprising at all As someone who lives in BC this really bothers me
The bottled water industry is sick, it's a complete waste of plastic and resources. Glad they're going to have to start paying to make it ($675 per year starting 2016, albeit basically free for them) (edit: I cannot read)
That's still not a lot of money.
I thought they fined/banned nestle two years ago for this exact thing or something.

Either jack the prices they have to pay up very significantly, or just tell them to get the fuck out for a while. I think I'd have more faith in the BC government actually doing something than the California government.

They were a minority, forced an election due to non-confidence, polls said they would indeed tank in the rankings.....and we fucking voted them back in with a near majority. Our logic is fucked out west. v:v:v

And Nestle said water should be privatized and not a human right. How much greedier can you get
$2.25 per million litres starting in 2016.
Wow, it's fucking nothing
I remember a couple years back when the CEO of Nestle said clean water should not be free, although I forget if he was just talking about bottled water, probably was, either way he's an asshole. The thread was posted here too.
APPARENTLY the issue with regulating nestle, and the bottled water industry in BC as a whole, is that as they use water from aquifers, which is not currently subject to any NAFTA trade laws, that if BC was to start rising rates or start legislation, our aquifer water would become subject to NAFTA trade laws, and thus be free game for the american bottling industry to step in and only be subject to the NAFTA clause, which is really not going to be much better for us in the long run, or so it would seem. What worries me is that our current government in BC is incompetent and full of commercial ties that heavily compromises our overall province. The LNG project that is currently trying to be ramrodded through is just rife with numerous long term costs and no benefits long or short term for anyone but the corporate puppets we have in office currently. We live on the edge of an extreme real estate bubble. We're incredibly cramped and incredibly packed in with an ill designed layout of the city of Vancouver and the metro areas for the long term growth the city is projected to see. We're one of the only provinces with a surplus budget, but our current government is highly corrupt for a few different scandals in the past few years so there's certainly some questions to be had there. We'er also in possession of that surplus through ruthless cuts to schools, education, and public services. The transportation company, Translink, failed it's recent public referendum with a fairly resounding no, because no one trusts them with their money. The CEO, the interm CEO, the board, and the executives are all massively overpaid whilst the system flounders with a lack of funding to it's bus system. The issue with that is, Translink is a crown corporation so the public foots the bill but receives little of the profits. It's inept and corrupt because the administrators are appointed by the government, who picks their special friends. We have a roaring marijuana trade that exists in such a legal gray area that the federal government wants nothing to do with it yet out own province is cracking down on it like it's meth and refusing to see the tax benefits of legalizing it outside of medical situations, which speaking of medical marijuana, we're also trying to make that harder to deal with and get for people with actual issues. Our government is also rolled up in a scandal where the government and pharma companies entered into a research agreement, the government sacked 8 of the employees with 0 paper work filed, saved, or kept, there are no records of why they were fired or what for, and one of the 8 has since committed suicide. The issue is 3 years later, there's no answers to be found, and no one who worked in the administration is available for comment, with two of the previous administrators having absconded to Australia and since gotten married. The Premier won't apologize for it other than to say "I have apologized for this" even though she never offered an actual apology. The Premier and her cabinet have also gone OUT of their way to deny and dismiss any and all attempts to have an inquiry take place. They've since sent it out to an ombudsman who has said it actually isn't within his power to do this, and it will take a formal investigation by a federal inquirer. However, they've said that they'll absolutely not be taking that course of action. It's incredibly hard to believe, but there's more JUST from this current administration that they've fucked up in their own term. We'll see the after math of their bullshit before too long. Fucking Christie Clark is a horrible Premier.
I hate that these companies keep bottling public water as their own, and then selling it for a profit. It's why California is in a drought, and it's not helping anybody else.
large corporations will have to pay $2.25 per million litres
this is beyond pointless
How about we just kick them the fuck out entirely? Eat shit, Nestle, and give me my water back - without a 100000%+ markup.

Not surprising. They pull of the same shit in africa where people are yearning for water but only get the dirtiest of it all while the biggest companies keep on snatching the water.
Why do people even buy bottled water anymore in first world nations. The only reason one should have bottled water is for emergency provisions in the event of a natural disaster. We live in a society where drinkable water comes in huge quantities in plenty of sources in our daily live. Just save a damn bottle and buy a canteen or something that you fill up before leaving the house. Most bottled water tastes like shit compared to the tap anyway. Also why does anyone prefer to pay a few bucks for a bottle of water at a restaurant instead of just asking for a cup from the tap for free.

I just reuse bottles now by filling them with tap water. Hell of a lot cheaper. Some people like my mom say that tap water 'tastes grainy', which I never really got.
Rarely buy bottled water now, only do it if I have to. I always just reuse my plastic bottles and fill it up from the tap, fridge or water cooler at home/work.
If you lived there and used 1 million litres of water, I have a feeling your water bill would be a tad higher than $2.25. What a disgusting and blatant double standard. It's even worse when there's a drought was well. Pathetic.

In the area of my home, tap water safety isn't 100% guaranteed, a lot of our piping is still cast iron and can carry nasty chunks of filth or turn orange from time to time. Granted, solved with an end-user water filter and our water isn't contaminated with sewage or bacteria, which is what most people mean by "safe water" or "clean water." I do try to re-bottle whenever I can, but sometimes it's not an option. I don't drink exclusively bottled by any means.

However BC and Alberta don't have this problem. Its literally day old Rocky Mountain water or straight up Rocky Mountain water. People are just being dumb.
I hate that these companies keep bottling public water as their own, and then selling it for a profit. It's why California is in a drought, and it's not helping anybody else.
That isn't the reason at all. The reason is because the vast majority of water in California goes into agriculture, and it's being used to grow shit like avocados. Very little of Californian water is bottled and sold, or is even used in domestic applications. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_in_California#Uses_of_water
Alfalfa uses about 20% of California irrigation water, most of which is used as livestock feed. In 2012, California exported 575,000 tons of alfalfa to China, for $586 million.[14] Other common crop water use, if using all irrigated water - rice (despite its lack of water, California grows nearly 5 billion pounds of rice per year, and is the second largest rice-growing state [15][16]);head of broccoli: 5.4 gallons; one walnut: 4.9 gallons; head of lettuce: 3.5 gallons; one tomato: 3.3 gallons; one almond 1.1 gallon; one pistachio: 0.75 gallon; one strawberry 0.4 gallon; one grape: 0.3 gallon.[17]
The water bottling industry in California uses about 3 billion gallons of water a year, which is 0.075% of total water consumption in the state (4 trillion gallons a year). If you want to get pissed, get pissed at the rice farmers trying to grow rice in fucking California.
can i pay $2.25 for a million litres of water too?

Clean water is hardly ever immediately available and during the summer you can fly through several bottles an hour. Not everyone works in an office
