The change was announced in a statement sent to Ars Technica:
Go Daddy is no longer supporting SOPA, the "Stop Online Piracy Act" currently working its way through U.S. Congress. "Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation—but we can clearly do better," Warren Adelman, Go Daddy's newly appointed CEO, said. "It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."
GoDaddy's embarrassing climbdown took barely 24 hours. The boycott started on Thursday on reddit (an Ars sister site), but it quickly spread to the broader Internet. GoDaddy's competitors began offering special deals with promo codes like "SopaSucks" to entice GoDaddy switchers. Initially, GoDaddy was defiant. In a statement emailed to Ars Technica Thursday evening, the company said "Go Daddy has received some emails that appear to stem from the boycott prompt, but we have not seen any impact to our business." But this reaction only enraged GoDaddy's customers. And evidently, the impact on their business began to be more obvious on Friday. GoDaddy claims that during negotiations over SOPA, the company "fought to express the concerns of the entire Internet community and to improve the bill" by pushing to make the bill's provisions less onerous. But now the company has been forced to concede that the bill's authors did not adequately address the Internet community's concerns. "In changing its position, Go Daddy remains steadfast in its promise to support security and stability of the Internet," the company's Friday statement reads. GoDaddy says it has removed past postings expressing support for the legislation from its website.
Fuck yeah!
That's great!
Well that's one less SOPA Supporter. Everyone counts.
Godaddy still sounds like a poor porn website.
It's funny. Since SOPA would destroy Godaddy [editline]23rd December 2011[/editline]
Godaddy still sounds like a poor porn website.
Ads are still porn ads.
never liked godaddy
never liked godaddy
Godaddy always seems a bit overhyped, never heard of how the service is, but still. Seemed very average but with a more 'standing out of the crowd' feel to it. [editline]23rd December 2011[/editline]

have you no humor?
Who ever thought boycotts would work so well?

Was it really necessary to screenshot the user 1 inch above you?
Was it really necessary to screenshot the user 1 inch above you?
Easier than explaining. But it seems like I still have to explain WHY I did it so it was all moot.
Hit them in the one place it hurts them the most Their wallets
Easier than explaining. But it seems like I still have to explain WHY I did it so it was all moot.
Ummm no, copying, editting, cropping, adding text, uploading, then posting is not 'easier' than saying "Your title, wtf?"
Ummm no, copying, editting, cropping, adding text, uploading, then posting is not 'easier' than saying "Your title, wtf?"
If not for text I'd just say he used automatic capturer.
If not for text I'd just say he used automatic capturer.
A small script/program that automatically does it all except for adding text. Even opens it in MsPaint before upload so I can tweak it a little. Wonky at times though so i usually avoid it.
I remember when they were talking tough shit yesterday. Ooooh irony.
I'm I the only person who doesn't know what godaddy is? I have seen the ads but it sounds like a sexy google to me or something.
Way to stick to your beliefs, GoDaddy.
I'm I the only person who doesn't know what godaddy is? I have seen the ads but it sounds like a sexy google to me or something.
They're a domain/hosting company for websites. They do plenty of racy ads, so you're not too off the mark.
It's funny. Since SOPA would destroy Godaddy [editline]23rd December 2011[/editline] Ads are still porn ads.
Apparently, GoDaddy helped write the legislation for SOPA, and there's actually a section that says that GoDaddy are exempt from shutdowns due to SOPA. Found this link on Reddit: http://idealab.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/sopa-hearing-will-never-end.php
Polis pointed out that SOPA and Smith’s amendment already excluded certain operators of sub-domains, such as GoDaddy.com, from being subject to shutdowns under SOPA.
So basically they were supporting it because it would cause other businesses to suffer, increasing their business when everyone moves to them because they won't be affected by SOPA. I bet you anything, if SOPA passes, GoDaddy will do a U-turn and say they're supporting it again. Boycott needs to continue in my opinion, they need to be made an example of. edit - The reddit link, not that it's difficult to find. This is likely the course of events they planned out from the very beginning - support it initially for monetary gain, then respond to the inevitable customer backlash to appear as the good guy while still reaping the rewards of the bill. I think the boycott should continue.

Doesn't really make sense to me though, supporting something when they know they'll face a customer backlash. I know a lot of people aren't being fooled by it and are continuing to move their domains to other companies.

GoDaddy is kind of a big deal They've grown since this chart was created
Theres actually a clause in SOPA that specifically excludes godaddy from everything sopa says. Hilarious really. Source for that, search godaddy This is essentially just a "yeah we arent supporting it" while they continue to pay off and bribe *cough* i meant lobby for sopa. Their orginization had a hand on writing the damn thing, they arent just going to abandon it.
