Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Tuesday that the Iraqis had promised they would not request any Russian airstrikes or support for the fight against ISIS. Shortly after leaving Baghdad, Dunford told reporters traveling with him that he had laid out a choice when he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi earlier Tuesday. "I said it would make it very difficult for us to be able to provide the kind of support you need if the Russians were here conducting operations as well," Dunford said. "We can't conduct operations if the Russians were operating in Iraq right now." He said there was "angst" in the U.S. when reports surfaced that al-Abadi had said he would welcome Russian airstrikes in Iraq. The U.S., Dunford said, "can't have a relationship right now with Russia in the context of Iraq..."
This seems like a great way for Russian to assume all leadership in Iraq from this point forward. I'm sure the leadership in Iraq would love support from the Russians over support from the US. As far as they're concerned the US wants to leave while the Russians seem pretty all in. The Russians also wouldn't care if another dictator would be put into place after ISIS is removed.

I'm perfectly fine with this since trying keep track of who is who would be a tactical nightmare not to mention I am sure many "accidents" would occur
Russian Vietnam V2? I actually don't have that much of an issue with this. Will shut up the people who care about boots (or American involvement in general) so much, and Russia seems to be pretty enthusiastic about this.
Why don't we team up or something? I would love to see the US and Russia as buddies for once.
Well, it'll get us out of the middle east, hopefully.
Considering the US has done fuck all to help except a bunch of shitty bombings I think I can guess who Iraq will side with.
Considering the US has done fuck all to help except a bunch of shitty bombings I think I can guess who Iraq will side with.
We haven't fucked up that bad dude.
Y'all are blind to the situation. Iraq accepting Russian support would be their single dumbest move of the last decade. Russia doesn't give a fuck about them and it certainly isn't going to try and institute a democracy.
They didn't give a fuck about the middle east the last time they were there.
Why don't we team up or something? I would love to see the US and Russia as buddies for once.
Yeah actually. The rational thing to do would be to cooperate with them on ISIS. There's a reason that we aren't siding with them that our government isn't telling us, and it probably has little to do with the humanitarian situation, and more to do with neo-con interests in Syria, frankly. Fucking neo-cons.
Why don't we team up or something? I would love to see the US and Russia as buddies for once.
not gonna happen, russia will turn it into a power struggle, they already tried that in afghanistan, thats why karzi was refusing to allow american troops to continue being stationed there even as the taliban started taking back territory and ISIS started carving up syria, he lost, russia lost their in-man, and the current government is too scared about what a full US withdrawl means in terms of their immediate security that they won't try it again
I doubt the Iraqi's give much of a shit about democracy to be honest.
Iraqs different groups need self-determination.
Why don't we team up or something? I would love to see the US and Russia as buddies for once.
This news story is late. A day or two ago, Russia and the US signed an agreement to stay out of each other's way in Syria. So that's probably why we aren't teaming up. Plus, Russia hates the west. [editline]21st October 2015[/editline]
I doubt the Iraqi's give much of a shit about democracy to be honest.
Some do. Others don't. The ones that don't support ISIS and the like.
I doubt the Iraqi's give much of a shit about democracy to be honest.
They don't, and they won't until they live under a less corrupt government. They're very religious also, and that factors into it, to them one regime hasn't been any different than the other and they haven't seen otherwise. If a dictator came tomorrow and gave them economic growth, they wouldn't care either way.

Without stability democracies just crumble which has been the problem with all the middle eastern countries that have tried to move to democracy so far.

Except Israel.
Except Israel.
They're very affiliated with the west, though.
Why don't we team up or something? I would love to see the US and Russia as buddies for once.
Were you under a rock last year? Putin invaded Urkraine because they dared to tell Putin to fuck off rather than take the ass rape from their Russian installed President. America and Russia's relations have soured from our sanctioning the fuck out of them.
It became clear he was under a rock when he said "team up" and "Russia" in the same thought.
I mean don't get me wrong, I would love to see the day when Americans and Russians could join hand in and in peace and put all this Cold War bullshit behind us, but it's obvious current leaders won't get the Cold War get cold.
Considering the US has done fuck all to help except a bunch of shitty bombings I think I can guess who Iraq will side with.
Damned if we do, damned if we don't. The world is filled with a bunch of damn hypocrites when it comes to shit like this. I think we should just sit back and let other nations handle things for awhile because the same people will bitch no matter what we do.

And there we go. The states finally got an excuse to abandon the operation.

We got blamed for not intervening there. Had we gone in, there would have been even more death, and we would have gotten shit for that too. So idk what the world wants from the US anymore.
