People are being warned to be on the lookout for criminals sneaking a look at their PIN numbers and stealing their cards to get hold of cash.
Incidents like this at cash machines have tripled since last year.
The police and banks have been cracking down on high-tech fraud like card reading devices - but while they are making some advances, the fraudsters are now opting for more low-tech cons.

ATM those things aren't safe.
Have a PIN longer than four digits; your average person won't be able to memorise it.

That's possible? I always assumed a PIN was exactly 4 digits.

In Australia, it is at least. It was the first question I asked when I first registered my bank account, haha.

My bank allows up to either 12 or 14, though they don't guarantee it'll work on machines that aren't theirs. I can vouch for never having problems with a 6-digit pin.
Time to create alphanumeric pin entry allowing up to 30 characters.
Try reading that over my shoulder.

I might go up to the Commonwealth tomorrow and ask about making mine longer, if I can.

My gmail is nearly twice as long with special characters, upper and lower case and numbers. It would take ~1e+51 years at 1000 password guesses / second to bruteforce.

with two factor
Just another reason to not go outside!
I once had some guy who was lingering around the ATM. I was watching from a distance as he was trying to peak at people entering their card numbers, but sort of failing at it. Two policemen were watching from a distance too, and arrested him promptly.
He was the typical bumbling thief kinda character.
Or a fingerprint(secret to success) + eye scan + four digits number

With another 4 digit number that calls the police while also giving out the money

My PIN is my birthday.
Good way to steal PINS:
Install small thermal imaging camera above cash machine.
Even if the person shields there pin when entering, there will be a thermal imprint on the keys after.

It's called using phrases/sentences you particularly like.
I hope nobody gets their head crushed by one.

Spit on your hand and rub it all over the camera. That'll make for some nice thermal images.
this fits perfectly into my "fuck i wish i got that on camera" moment of the week, some little shit in Sheffield was trying to sneak a peak at this elderly ladies pin at an atm and she played him by turning till he got closer and closer then she tasered him when he got too close haha....... atm camera caught it all apparently.

Too bad they cost more than the money you could get from a PIN number.

aren't max pull out amounts about 300? Some I imagine are more.
Rob 5 people at 300$ a person and you'd have that paid off almost.
I imagine competent thieves are making it away with more than that already

or you can be like me and just hit enter when doing a transaction and put it on credit instead of putting in a pin :v:
I just had my PIN compromised on tuesday.
I'm pretty sure it was a tampered-with Verifone SC 5000 terminal used at starbucks since they aren't hardwired (just pop out the phone cord it uses and replace with your own), nor do they use the chip system.

It really only takes one corrupt employee with quick hands to get your pin. Its a bit disturbing.
Really makes me suspicious of other people when buying things which is one of the reasons I rarely shop. People at Starbucks especially seem to really hate their job and the customers considering all of the hate sites and recent controversies.
