The Wall Street Journal reported today that Google is developing an Android-powered game console, saying that "people familiar with the matter" have provided details to the newspaper. Google declined to comment. According to the WSJ, Google is "reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release." Apple also declined to comment on the matter.

We have the Ouya, you cannot possibly top that Google.

Professionally run stand outside the E3 parking lot? Count me in.
Oh man, I can't wait to play every game on the unity engine!
Stop trying to be a monopoly, google.
I imagine it'd just be a living-room friendly computer console running a more powerful, game-oriented OS (AKA: Google's take on a Steambox). I wonder how they'll deal with compatibility with non-Android/Linux games? It'd be silly to develop a console only capable of playing phone apps, so they'd have to incorporate some kind of wider content appeal to make it sell well.

It's not exactly hard lol
Google are great. Android is great, the Nexus are great, their web services are great... why the fuck not.
I wonder if they'll ever release any upgrades for the Nexus Q. Mine gets regular use, but there could be more functionality.
more competition can only be better
Well, they're good with browsers, maps, and a bunch of shit.
If this is true, this will be interesting.

sorry seiteki, but the q is the buster bluth of the nexus lineup

I had to look up what you were talking about.
I like my Q. It was free and plays my music/movies/and such.

yeah i know but they removed playing to a q from google music 4.0
the way google works is if they don't like how a product/service turned out, thats it
think of it like google wave, but in hardware format

Okay?
Oh man, I can't wait to play every game on the unity engine!
this but unironically. the engine a game was built in means nothing if the game was good. kentucky route zero anyone?
You'll get a google console before you'll get a steambox.
If it can stream from services such as Netflix and play 1080p video off of a flash drive then I'd be sold provided that the price is right. I'm also interested in gaming too but I know that I'll probably get bored of that and just use it to watch movies and TV shows.

Buy a cheap pc, place it under your tv and just stream from that. Don't deal with a controlling provider like MS, Sony or possibly Google if you plan to use it strictly for media.
If this turns out exactly like the OUYA, and everyone praises it just because it's from Google I'm going to throw a fit.

But Steambox will use a nice lean customized Linux distro with gaming in mind, Android would never be as good and probably will be like when Android first started supporting tablets: not very good.
Now I await at minimum three posts telling me Android uses a customized Linux kernel
I wouldn't be too surprised if it turns out perfectly alright. I mean... just because it's not what they're known for gaming doesn't mean that they couldn't be successful anyway... Both Sony and Microsoft were successful companies in other areas before they decided to start making consoles.

realize that a Google console will not be playing AAA games but instead various Chromebook and Android games
Google does everything better. I can't see how this could go wrong if its true.
Android-powered game console
They'd probably have to get more than a few developers on board to beef up the games library. The Play store isn't exactly stuffed with high quality games these days (and if I'm wrong, then the shitty sorting options have kept them hidden from me).
A market saturated in consoles.. been a while since we've seen that
edit: hope the dumb wasn't interpreting me as anti-Google console? this is only a positive thing for consumers
Last time we had more than 3 non-portable consoles was 5th gen (PS1, N64, Saturn/Dreamcast, Jaguar, 3DO) I think.
You'll get a google console before you'll get a steambox.
Not like anyone here needs one, they all have gaming PCs. The only reason to buy a console is for platform exclusives.
Unless Valve can release a SteamOS (only you know, not as buggy) that's optimised for games but still plays all the x86 games, then there's no reason to really buy a Steambox. If you really want a small form factor build a mATX/ITX system for probably what'll be a fraction of the cost.
Me, I'll stick to ATX and my oversized 800D.

google deserves to be broken up tbh, along with amazon, att, dole etc..
