One of Norway's largest prisons has decided to shut down the farm on its premises - but inmates are reportedly heartbroken at bidding farewell to the animals that helped them fight addiction and move on from lives of crime.
Half of the 200 animals at Ana farm are cows, and the prisoners look after them, milk them and maintain the farm. But the authorities say the farm doesn't occupy enough prisoners to be cost-effective. A former prisoner at Ana, who prefers to be known as Patrick, is campaigning to halt the closure. "I got so much from working on the farm," he tells Aftenbladet newspaper. "It taught me a lot about responsibility. I couldn't skip a day, as the cows depended on me for milking at regular times."
The hard, regular work also helped Patrick overcome drug dependence. "Something happens to us addicts when we come into contact with animals," he says. "It leads us to open up to other people."
They should do a signature campaign for sponsors to keep the farm open. Anything that helps the inmates remain responsible is OK in my book.
Oh come the fuck on Norway, you have so much oil money you could keep that farm open until the heat death of the Universe.
To those who may not read the article, it also affects the staff and local community.
Also the authorities clearly said it's not cost-efficient because they don't employ enough prisoners, so.. why not employ more prisoners? Lack of interest maybe..?
I can't imagine running a farm not being cost-efficient with prison labor included unless...you are Norway and have perhaps spent too much money on other prison luxuries etc? Idk.
I find it funny that this has to be closed down because there aren't enough prisoners since America is just fucking overflowing with them.
We should seriously start a program to start shipping out the low-security prisoners over to Scandinavia. It'd lower the amount of prisoners we're dealing with and actually help with actual rehabilitation.
reminds me of the story of how a former drug addict had his dog taken away from him because of his past. dog had helped him fight the addiction and was his only friend, poor guy was so heartbroken
It is always sad to lose something you have put effort and even see them grow.
Hope they can find something else to fill this new hole in their lifes.
"It's nice for inmates to be around animals, but the Correctional Service oversees their sentences, not therapy," he says.
wow what a dick
I don't think you guys get it, they didn't have too few prisoners to run a farm, the farm could only house so many prisoners at once at a certain size, and to let more prisoners participate, they would have to make the farm larger.
Probably only a lucky few had the opportunity to work there and that's not exactly fair to the rest who get nothing alike as the farm is too costly. They are looking for alternative that would fit in more prisoners and allow them to work there.

Or we could focus on fixing the social issues that lead so many to being incarcerated rather than blaming straw men.
But what if someone is arrested for bestiality??
Or we could focus on fixing the social issues that lead so many to being incarcerated rather than blaming straw men.
Or we could just argue on the internet and throw out the names of random fallacies that we don't really know anything about
Oh I see you already started
But what if someone is arrested for bestiality??
then they probably would not be assigned to the farm

so you'd rather just rely on another country's working system than fix your own?
so you'd rather just rely on another country's working system than fix your own?
All he is proposing is that it would be great if we could send limited amounts of criminals charged with non-violent and minor crimes to other countries systems instead of cramming them in a 10x10 cell with another inmate who could be in for stabbing children.
Our prison system isn't going to be fixed any time soon and the situation above is a lot more realistic to achieve than overhauling our entire system. I don't expect any significant progressive changes to how our prisons are ran for at least twenty years until we can (maybe) fix some of the even worse problems in our country.
Until then our governments idea of "fixing our own" is going to be to build more prisons.

Somehow I doubt that he can fix a prison system run on money and corruption.

Or maybe it was a joke post.

Well to be fair, sending people to prison is our national pastime.
Or maybe it was a joke post.
it's hard to tell when people actually post like that pretty often
I remember when we shipped our convicts over to a different continent

I have an even better idea, have Norway invade us! Then it wouldn't be using another country!

Pay me enough and I'll happily have a few murderers living in my basement

And now we're Number 2 next to Norway for living standards :v:

I'd rather convert our country's system to a working one but it'd be a lot easier to start by showing people that it actually works a hell of a lot better than shoving people in a box for 60 years for selling mariguana and downloading music

Ya because prisoners being reformed by a system instead of punished is bad!
Do like us Americans do and make commuting minor infractions enough to get you rotting behind bars!!
We used to have a prison farm near me like this but they closed it down when they tried to sell it to private companies

hide behind your quality-of-life lists all you want, i watched the trailer for that documentary on australia called fury road and the place looks like hell incarnate
I think stuff like this is good for inmates. I don't know if Norwegian prisons are as hardcore as American ones, but when go to jail thinking you're the scum of the Earth, think how you'll be once you get out. Doing work like farm work can bring some grace to an inmates life and help them reintegrate with society.

But the reason the US has so many prisoners is to generate income for the private prison system. That's also why American prisons are punitive rather than rehabilitative - to keep people who have criminal records from re-integrating into society by denying them options. Shipping them to Scandinavia or even giving people fewer long, bullshit sentences for petty crime would lower the income for American businesses.
