Georgia Senate passes bill for adoption agencies to reject gay couples
The Georgia Senate approved a bill Friday that allows adoption agencies to use their religion as a justification to deny gay couples.
The Senate’s 35-19 vote on the controversial “religious liberty” legislation sends the bill to the Georgia House, where its prospects are uncertain amid concerns that battles over gay rights could hurt the state’s chances of landing Amazon’s second headquarters.
The legislation, Senate Bill 375, would ensure that taxpayer-funded adoption agencies can turn away married gay couples seeking to adopt children from foster care.
Lawmakers pushing the bill say it would encourage more religious adoption agencies to open in Georgia, but opponents of the measure contend it’s a discriminatory effort that would reduce options for foster children to be adopted.
[B]“The goal is to open as many doors as possible for those children that are in need of homes, and this bill will do that,” said Sen. William Ligon, R-Brunswick, the sponsor of the bill.

Adoption agencies already have the ability to refuse to do business with gay couples, but the legislation would insulate agencies from future changes in state policy. Discrimination based on sexual orientation isn’t prohibited under state and federal laws.

Two years ago, Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a similar religious liberty measure, saying it didn’t reflect Georgia’s image as a welcoming state with “warm, friendly and loving people.” That bill would have allowed faith-based organizations to deny services to those who violate their “sincerely held religious belief.”
Factual Reporting: HIGH
Yeah, create more opportunites for adoption by allowing adoption centers to discriminate against LGBT couples, unmarried couples, and single parents, thus reducing the pool of possible adopters
Makes perfect sense
You wouldn't think we were in 2018, would you? What a disgrace.
If it does pass the House I hope governor Deal vetoes it again, he's term limited and can't run for reelection this year so he has nothing to lose.
edit: my bad it wasn't the same bill, but had similar intentions allowing faith based organizations to deny services if people violate their beliefs
I can't see how thats legal but then its all just red meat for their conservative base

While just barely managing to keep a straight face, I imagine.
Republicans: Yeah, we're saturday morning cartoon villains but who cares?

Gay and Lesbian couples don't live in homes. You heard it here first folks.

There is no way someone with short term memory that the could say this after endorsing the bill.
Gay and lesbian couples are just the most adorable things and when they have kids it's just goddamn heartmelting levels of adorable.

More importantly, we're just normal people. But yes, we can be adorable

I was going to say something to this effect. I think all couples, no matter their sexual orientation or gender, can be revered.

The whole “x couples are so cute” thing is actually really weird. It feels like fetishizing it and puts people on a pedestal for no reason
I'm also a lesbian so yeah I find it cute.
So am I and what comes to mind is “oh look a couple”

Literal double think
So am I and what comes to mind is “oh look a couple”
to be honest I get super excited when I see gay couples. but they shouldn't be treated as anything special, and especially shouldn't be treated as anything less than normal

How can you even say that, you hypocrites? You want to "open as many doors as possible", yet you do the opposite.
Fuck off
We need to reduce reproduction and increase adoption and this isn't helping

Expecting logical consistency from bigots is a fruitless exercise
Expecting logical consistency from homophobes is a fruitless exercise
Pretty much yeah, they have no logical train of thought
They think that gay marriage impedes on the rights of all others and ruins families, while impeding on the rights of others and ruining families
it's insane double think backwards logic bullshit
It's like saying theft is wrong and pushing against it while shoving a bunch of candy under your shirt like some asshole

"gays icky ew" ~entire thought process of every homophobe
"gays icky ew" ~entire thought process of every homophobe
Pretty much. I used to be self-loathing (and therefore homophobic) because of social conditioning. Went to a small-ish convention like... 6 years ago or so, and saw two guys kiss, and it just felt wrong and nasty to look at, like a biological "this is bad" response happened in my gut. This is what homophobes feel, and it's what we need to fix. Hopefully the next generation of children will feel that response less, until nobody has any problem with it.
This isn't the only reason but I do praise you on being honest. There is also religious reasons which I can't begin to describe how moronic it is.
Religion is the excuse, tbh.

The goal is to stop religious adoption agencies from closing down because they're forced to go against their religious beliefs. I can't imagine there are more gay couples looking to adopt than kids in religious agencies that might close down.

Perhaps we should help the children in need of homes instead of pandering to institutions with harmful morals.

If your religious morals tell you that it's better to leave orphaned children destitute, unloved, and abandoned than it is to provide them with a stable and loving family, I don't really know what to say. Jesus socialized with prostitutes and money-lenders - yet we need to protect these religious adoption agencies from having to deal with those icky gays?
This is plain old bigotry disguising itself as an appeal to religious freedom.
Didnt a bunch of companies threaten to pull out of Georgia and cripple the state economy because of homophobic legislation?
Bigots are the real gays, they keep screwing millions

Wouldn't that make them bisexual?

no

Lol this is such a weird way of presenting the situation, it almost looks like you have some level of bias in favour of people looking to discriminate against homosexuals. (I'm not accusing you of anything, it's just how it comes across).
These organisations aren't "being forced to close down". They are throwing a tantrum, at the expense of the children who depend on them, because they aren't allowed to discriminate against people based on their sexuality.
There's literally nothing forcing them to shut down- they simply value their bigotry higher than the welfare of the children under their care.
