US Paratrooper faces minor punishment for taking his pet fish on a jump and taking a selfie
The paratrooper who celebrated his upcoming departure from the Army by jumping with his pet Siamese fighting fish — and whose selfie of the act later went viral on social media — will serve 12 days of extra duty before closing out his time in uniform.
Spc. Matthew Tattersall, who is assigned to 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, received a company-grade Article 15, with the extra duty as punishment.
"The way I see it, if you do the crime, you'd better be willing to do the time," Tattersall said. "They certainly, if they absolutely wanted to, the punishment could have been far worse, so I'm not upset about anything. I understand that there were going to be consequences for it."
To mark his last jump April 11, Tattersall decided to bring his fish, "Willy MakeIt", along for the ride.
Tattersall and Willy MakeIt made it safely to the ground, and the hardy fish earned a middle name. He's now Willy Did MakeIt.
Tattersall, who will spend his evenings and weekends through May 9 doing everything from cleaning hallways to moving boxes, said he is relieved that he will be able to transition out of the Army as scheduled.
Tattersall is expected to start his transition leave on May 20, and he has a job lined up to begin May 28.
I can tell by his face that it was worth it.
That's very cute. And hell, 12 extra days of service isn't so bad. Beneficial, even... But it is just moving boxes and cleaning, but its good work ethic!
That picture is totally worth 12 days of extra service
Best news I've seen in weeks.
Made my day, really did.
Willy MakeIt.
Brilliant.

Nope. Extra Duty sucks.
(1). Extra duty is a punishment. These duties may be required to be performed at anytime and for any length of time. The duties may include performance of fatigue duty or any other duty.
(2). The hours established within the _______ Company for extra duty are:
a. Weekdays: 1800 - 2330 hours
b. Weekends and Holidays: 0900-1800 hours.
c. Soldier will be afforded the opportunity to eat chow on weekends and holidays from 1100-1200 hours.
d. Soldiers will be allowed to take a 10 minute break every hour. The break will begin at exactly 10 minutes prior to the hour and end exactly on the hour. The break is not optional and will be taken in front of the orderly room.
e. Soldiers on extra duty will not engage in casual conversation with other soldiers.
(3). If a soldier fails to execute his/her duties to standard or malingers these hours may be extended by the 1SG or Commander. At no time will the SDNCO make this decision. The SD will log any problems or substandard performance in his log.
You do Extra Duty IN ADDITION TO morning PT and regular work/training. That means where you might have had a 0530-1700 work schedule and had the rest of the day off, the army now owns your entire day, from the moment you wake up to the moment you're asleep.
12 days of ED isn't much, but it will suck. They can give you up to 60-something days, if you really piss them off.
That's just a SOP format for units. Not by regulation that ALL units follow. The guidelines for ED generally depends on what CO and 1SG do and it may most likely vary from soldier to soldier.
All that freefall and pressure changes must've been a hell of a trip for lil' Willy
When I got extra duty, it was from 0700-2200. Shit sucks. However, for this guy who is getting out, it is totally worth it to go out with a bang like this.

It was probably a static line jump from low altitude, not a HALO jump or anything of the sort.
Woah shit, only 12 days of extra duties. Down here, thry throw you in military prison for a minimum of 10 days
I think it's cute but I see why he was reprimanded, when you wear the uniform you represent your country, so no foolin' about
That fish was either really freaked out by the whole drop or wasn't really thinking much because, y'know, it's a fish.

Not to mention you're supposed to be watching your risers and making sure you don't land in someone else's 'chute when your in a descent.
What he did is a safety violation.
Great picture, and I'm sure the minor punishment was worth it.
However, I hear his fish now has to join the marine corp.
He could've just waited till the day he left to post it...

If he had we wouldn't of known about it would we?

Let's be real a shitton of Americans would've done this if they were jumping out of a plane and had the opportunity. He's representing the country very well.
He could've just waited till the day he left to post it...
afaik he would have still been in trouble because it doesn't change the fact that he did it and the evidence is there.
