An emaciated man whose boat washed up on a remote Pacific atoll this week claims he survived 16 months adrift on the Pacific, floating more than 12,500 kilometers (8,000 miles) from Mexico, a researcher said Friday.
The man, with long beard and hair, was discovered Thursday when his 24-foot fibreglass boat with propellerless engines floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll and he was spotted by two locals.
"His condition isn't good, but he's getting better," Ola Fjeldstad, a Norwegian anthropology student doing research on Ebon, told Agence France Presse by telephone.
Fjeldstad said the man, dressed only in a pair of ragged underpants, claims he left Mexico for El Salvador in September 2012 with a companion, who died at sea several months ago.

Ivan indicated to Fjeldstad that he survived by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain.
No fishing gear was on the boat and Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands. There was a turtle on the boat when it landed at Ebon.
Norwegian survivability, ladies and gentlemen!
this is the fucking definition of a man
I wonder if he lied and ate his companion to survive
Holy shit...
This is bizarrely a lot like an RL version of Life of Pi, except there were no islands and no other passengers save his lone companion.
Manliest man alive.

He's Mexican, though!
Wow. That's all I got.
16 fucking months at sea, floating adrift.
-shit, that was already said-

Hopefully his companion wasn't a tiger, though.
Imagine spending over a year of your life isolated, on a boat, in the middle of the ocean.
I find this hard to believe.

He was only alone for the last few months though. But that still would be hell.
imagine the day his companion died.

oh man he left in 2012, they should have fucked with him and been like "oh ya btw while you were gone, the chinese landed on the moon and the pope retired, the new one is Argentinian"

Rain? maybe he had some containers or something that accumulated rainwater
No need to lie, it'd be legal
yeah but I wouldn't like to be the man who was adrift for 16 months and also ate his companion
Was his companion Richard Parker?
I bet he gained the powers of the Turtle after drinking all their soul juice.
Id say he got in a fight with his companion and killed him, then through the body overboard. Spending a few months with someone on a shitty claustrophobic boat would make anyone resort to murder.

I'd just play rock paper scissors on who eats eachother
Why did his boat not have some sort of emergency satellite beacon or whatever they use?
The dude will probably never be right again after being alone for that long. Get this man a cheeseburger, STAT
Holy shit, that's just insane.
I feel so sorry for him.

And a press conference.
Holy crap, that just blows me away. To think of being out to sea for 16 months. He left in fucking Sept. 2012! To think of all the things that happened in my life this last year, and then to imagine that period being spent out at sea in a small boat with another guy is mind-blowing.
I'm glad he survived, once he recovers he should write a book. :v:
I'd buy that shit.
