I keep hearing that Japanese horror movies are some of the scariest around. Also welcome to Facepunch
The Thing and Alien are musts.
drag me to hell
The Exorcist and The Innocents are by far the scariest I've ever seen. But I'm convinced that after a certain age it's almost impossible to get authentically "scared" by a movie.
The Thing (1982) Alien The Evil Dead Event Horizon Pandorum
I keep hearing that Japanese horror movies are some of the scariest around. Also welcome to Facepunch
Japanese horror movies are alright. But most of them consist of jump scares, very few are actually atmospheric/intense/suspenseful horror. Really, depends on what you like, and I'm also generalizing. Just from what I've seen, they're usually just jump/shock scares, which is cheap IMO.
There's a few that I watch every year and highly recommend: Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) Psycho (1960) Night Of The Living Dead (1968) The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) The Exorcist (1973) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Eraserhead (1977) Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978) Halloween (1978) Dawn of the Dead (1978/2004) Alien (1979) Altered States (1980) The Shining (1980) Friday the 13th (1980) Cannibal Holocaust (1980) The Evil Dead (1981) An American Werewolf In London (1981) The Thing (1982) A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) Day of the Dead (1984) Hellraiser (1987) Jacob's Ladder (1990) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Scream (1996) Stir of Echoes (1999) The Devil's Backbone (2001) The Orphanage (2007) Pontypool (2008) Antichrist (2009) I Saw The Devil (2010) The Cabin In The Woods (2012) Evil Dead (2013)
Alien The Shining Silence of the Lambs poltergeist The Thing
Rogue. It's one of the best crocodile movies ever. The suspense is pretty good, even if it's not exactly "scary".
The Ring is my personal favorite. It scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, and it's still unsettling to watch certain scenes in that movie.
Village of the dammed. Maybe the hills have eyes? What do y'all think of that one?
Nosferatu is one of the first big horror films and is extremely eerie. There are some scenes in that movie that still give me goosebumps.
Can't forget about the grandaddy of them all
