She says Australians want to celebrate the good things about their country without offending Aboriginal people, who have dubbed the day Invasion Day. Should Australia Day be moved? Have your say below. "We would like to see that change," Senator Milne told reporters in Hobart. "There would an opportunity to do that if Australia was to become a republic. "That would provide an opportunity to change the date and reframe the day." Former Greens leader Bob Brown will be among the speakers when the Tasmanian Aboriginal community rallies in Hobart on Sunday calling for a new date for the national celebration. "Australia is the only nation in the world that celebrates its national day on the date which colonisation occurred," Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre spokeswoman Ruth Langford said. "We hope that Australians will join with us in recognising that January 26 is an inappropriate day to celebrate nationhood and join us to commemorate this as a reflective day of mourning."
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2014/01/24/17/56/australia-day-needs-new-date-say-greens This is just about as worse as the proposal to change Australia Day to Citizens Day
Citizens Day, really? That was a myth.
Political correctness strikes again. -_-
acknowledging indigenous people as part of your society, the horror, the shame
"Australia is the only nation in the world that celebrates its national day on the date which colonisation occurred,"
Why not just use the date for when you became independent like Canada or the US?
If they change it, it'll be much harder to figure out how to enter Kyburz's office in Bioshock. That's a dick thing to do.
Why not just use the date for when you became independent like Canada or the US?
Because it falls on new years, and the only things Australians like more than racism, is public holidays.
Too late now to change it, and there would be no other suitable dates to move it to.
this will never happen the majority of the australian population would not agree with the change
Too late now to change it, and there would be no other suitable dates to move it to.
April 1st would be suitable in relation to the current state we are in.
acknowledging indigenous people as part of your society, the horror, the shame
ignoring their culture is part of our culture
acknowledging indigenous people as part of your society, the horror, the shame
There's not much more we can do, we've apologized, gave back most of the land, gave them the same rights and benefits as us and try our best to move on, moving the date would cause more shit that nobody wants
And next they're going after Anzac Day also.
And next they're going after Anzac Day also.
They better fucking not, our soldiers deserve respect. On another note, I've once heard that the greens at one point wanted to outright ban cars so I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to ban any military related day.
I remember last year when people said that having an Australian flag on your car on Australia Day was racist, this doesn't surprise me one bit. Can't wait to see what they try and do next year.
I remember people getting offended having the flag on your car after Australia Day.
it might not be offensive but it's trashy and bogan as hell
Why not just use the date for when you became independent like Canada or the US?
That's already a holiday. New Years Day. Jan 1, 1901 is when Australia officially federated
"There would an opportunity to do that if Australia was to become a republic.
Never! Australia will always be ours.
We have this 'debate' literally every year. In fact, the media annually runs the same three stories: 1. Australian Republic 2. The Date of Australia Day 3. Changing the Australian Flag

Changing the Australian Flag
There is literally no benefit to us being a republic, everything will just be the same and a big waste of time, I'm fine with the British Monarch and my flag because none of the designs have interested me but the Aboriginal flag [editline]24th January 2014[/editline]
And next they're going after Anzac Day also.
If they went after Anzac Day that'd be political suicide no questions asked, nobody fucks with that day

Looks pretty nice.
You could use something like the Eureka Stockade flag. Looks pretty nice.
I've said this before, the Eureka flag is a great flag BUT it's used by a lot of racist in Australia, mainly the people who hate immigrants and Asians
Isn't this the same idea as those Australia Day shirts from a week back that said "Australia: Founded 17??"? And then many of you supported their removal because it's pretty fucking obvious why the aboriginals would be upset? National Holidays and t-shirts are different though, and believe me I'm not saying the date should be moved, I'm just asking those of you who supported one why the other is so different
Political correctness strikes again. -_-
Political correctness will truly be the death of all western society
acknowledging indigenous people as part of your society, the horror, the shame
go bak 2 tumblr feminazi
I've said this before, the Eureka flag is a great flag BUT it's used by a lot of racist in Australia, mainly the people who hate immigrants and Asians
Why does it seem racist take all the good flags?
Why not just use the date for when you became independent like Canada or the US?
Make it July 3rd.
There's not much more we can do, we've apologized, gave back most of the land, gave them the same rights and benefits as us and try our best to move on, moving the date would cause more shit that nobody wants
We have the same problem in New Zealand, with the native Maori's having been given back a shit ton of land and also rights to a lot of the coasts around the country but they still ask for more. Waitangi day is usually called invasion day, but not by everybody.
There is literally no benefit to us being a republic, everything will just be the same and a big waste of time, I'm fine with the British Monarch and my flag because none of the designs have interested me but the Aboriginal flag
Making the aboriginal flag the Australian flag would be pretty silly. The one advantage of the Republic is that you would have an excuse for a public holiday. Of course you could just use the royals birthdays as an excuse.
I've said this before, the Eureka flag is a great flag BUT it's used by a lot of racist in Australia, mainly the people who hate immigrants and Asians
If we all adopt the Eureka flag it should counterbalance the amount of racists who use it, making the racists a minority that use it (who are a minority anyway), problem solved.
