Researchers have patented a new strain of seaweed they say tastes just like bacon when it's fried
Bacon!
If you can find me plants that taste like meat, I wouldn't mind being a vegetarian...
different source More nutritious than kale? Jeez, I wonder if this'll take off.
Shit this sounds delicious. Baconified seaweed in miso soup or ramen or something does sound good...
Yet another step towards plants tasting like meat.
probably doesn't taste at all like bacon.
This would probably be delicious as fuck in soup.

excuse me, plants have feelings too. just because you dont understand their language doesn't mean they arent ALIVE
Where's the fun in that? Half the enjoyment in eating meat comes from the knowledge that something died to fuel my hunger, and that somewhere a vegan is crying.
Where's the fun in that? Half the enjoyment in eating meat comes from the knowledge that something died to fuel my hunger, and that somewhere a vegan is crying.
most vegans will still be crying, or at least whining; its a GMO after all
If you can find me plants that taste like meat, I wouldn't mind being a vegetarian...
If you can find a reasonable alternative source of nutrients you'd obtain from meat, then I'd be game. Vegetarians and vegans will always boast about how this is false information, but reputable sources point to the fact that there are serious deficiencies you can get from not eating meat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian_nutrition#Potential_nutrient_deficiencies I'd like some of this stuff for salads but it's not a game changer.

It's perfectly possible to get all the nutrients you need from a vegetarian or even vegan diet.

I'll do some back-tracking through old notes to see if I can find the sources I've referred to in the past.
How the hell do you patent seaweed tho I mean if I find a new plant and deep-fry it and it cures cancer I couldn't patent it right
How the hell do you patent seaweed tho I mean if I find a new plant and deep-fry it and it cures cancer I couldn't patent it right
Same reason Monsanto can own certain strains of Wheat. I'm personally looking forward to an exciting new world of Bacon Flavoured Sushi rolls. Which would either be delicious or taste like an abomination.
Sounds like it could be the next big superfood in that case. Baconweed might just end up in every health shop in Portland if it's actually bacon-tasty and more vita-rich than kale.
The texture is probably still seaweed, which is my biggest problem with it.
most vegans will still be crying, or at least whining; its a GMO after all
I'm a vegan and I have no issue with GMO whatsoever, I just don't want to hurt anything
What does seaweed taste like? I'd imagine it'd be really salty and kind of bitter
Taste is one thing, texture another Bacon with seaweed texture sounds goddamn disgusting
I don't even like bacon, but that's because I'm a monster.
Sounds like it could be the next big superfood in that case. [editline]17th July 2015[/editline] So it probably already is in every health shop in portland.
I feel like this is just one of those steps in the natural progression toward a cyberpunk dystopia where all the food is seaweed or krill or soy or whatever. They're not even being subtle about it, salt and cover your meats today, they'll be tomorrow's luxury item.

So long as we can grow what we need for sausages, I'll probably be alright. Speaking of which, with all this talk of GMO food, it makes me wonder what the world would be like after civilisation collapsed and all the engineered foodstuffs ends up taking root in the wastes and wilds and wily waters of the world. I'm just saying, it'd be pretty crazy if some feudal coastal village in post-apocalyptic Oregon had access to baconweed growing in the shallows.
Taste is one thing, texture another Bacon with seaweed texture sounds goddamn disgusting
fried seaweed is crispy and light
By the gods. Has science gone to far?!
Man, maybe now I can finally stomach laver bread!
