France bans extraction of Natural Gas by way of "Fracking"
The French parliament voted on June 30 to ban the controversial technique for extracting natural gas from shale rock deposits known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the web sites of Le Monde and other French media reported.
Fracking requires the injection of vast quantities of water and potentially hazardous chemicals into the ground to force the release of natural gas. The U.S. government is investigating the environmental impact of the technique, which critics say produces toxic waste and pollutes water wells.
The bill had already passed the National Assembly, the country's lower chamber, on June 21, and on June 30 a Senate vote of 176 to 151 made France the first country to enact such a ban, just as New York State is preparing to lift a moratorium on the same method.
Companies that currently own permits for drilling in oil shale deposits on French land will have two months to notify the state what extraction technique they use. If they declare to be using fracking, or if they fail to respond, their permits will be automatically revoked.
For once, Australia wasn't the first nation to ban something.
holy frack
To bad its too prevalent in the states.
like I give a frack
So many puns in this thread, it's fracking rediculous.

It's with good reason
there was a good documentary about this, I forget what it's called though.
Fracking ruins the environment and shits on your mother, after it fracks her first.
Didn't fracking cause an earthquake in Blackpool a while ago?
I've heard some bad shit about fracking.
I think I heard some place got its ground water contaminated due to a close-by fracking operation.
What the Frack?
Didn't fracking cause an earthquake in Blackpool a while ago?
Wouldn't cause earthquakes, just trigger them sooner if they were already building up.
I can't frack the earth anymore? :saddowns:
Enough with the fracking puns, go release them elsewhere.

Yeah, some places around areas where they do this actually have flammable drinking water
Fracking Frencylons

This only happens with the wells are cracked and the companies always have to shell out money to repair it.

if this is happening so often then perhaps they shouldn't use it. perhaps people frequently having unsafe drinking water is not an acceptable cost for slightly cheaper natural gas
I can't believe no one has made a battlestar galactica pun yet.
Scratch that someone did.

It's not happening as often as you think. News stories and documentaries blow the frequency out of proportion. You're not going to agree with any statement like that though because you're already convinced that the magnitude of the issue is large.
Toxic drinking water is still a problem no matter how rarely it happens. Similarly egregious threats to public health aren't tolerated; this shouldn't be, either.

The issue with the second statement is that the threat to public health hasn't been shown to be sizable at all. It could be in the future, but at the moment I can't find any research that indicates that fracking is a danger to anyone besides people who have cracked wells and these occurrences are very rare. There is a whole lot of speculation about what fracking may do to the environment, but I don't think it would be wise to use speculation as proof until it is proven and put into context.
I have a big issue with the first statement, mainly because it is based in preventative action.
X accidents are still a problem no matter how rarely it happens
X should be banned
I'm pretty sure you're in support of this being banned, though if you're just for more regulation then change the conclusion to "x should have more regulation". Anyway, this issue with this sort of logic is that you can apply it to any rare occurrence.
Car accidents is a still a problem no matter how rarely it happens
Cars should be banned
Sports accidents are still a problem no matter how rarely it happens
Sports should be banned
Of course I picked examples that few people would argue for. Also, car and sports accidents are pretty common.
If research proves that there is significant damage caused by fracking that is on a magnitude greater to other processes such as drilling for oil, then I'd have to reconsider my opinion, but as of now I think there should maybe be some regulations to help prevent what we know it can cause, and to not think about a ban until enough research has been done.
Even though it might save money, I agree that it should be banned because of the damage it does to the soil while it can be avoided.

Why is it that we have to ban everything in the name of being environmentally "responsible"
:sigh:
