Graffiti and street art are two growing forms of art, especially in urban settings where there are many open flat surfaces and walls. Mainstream graffiti found in cities used to just be a way for people to instate their anger, distaste, or simply use their freedom of speech. Graffiti became a very artistic and stylistic affair, with people all around "tagging" names and other phrases on pretty much any flat surface available.
Graffiti is mainly a stylized way of writing, however the category of street art brings it a notch further. Street art is a very broad term, and there are a few different styles. The two most popular are wheat pasting and stencilling.
Wheat Pasting
Wheat pasting is the process of putting up a drawn, traced or painted picture on a wall/flat surface by "pasting" the piece of paper that the picture is on to the surface. The paste can be made out of several different types of ingredients, but usually cheap homebrew ingredients work the best for what the artist wants. A few examples:

There is a very nice tutorial on wheat pasting made by a DeviantArt user that will cover basically everything you need to know about pasting for yourself:
http://rook-art.deviantart.com/art/Wheatpaste-Tutorial-58353985
Stencilling
Stencilling is quite similar to wheat pasting, but a bit more difficult to pull off. However, in my opinion a stencilled picture can be made to look much better and more artistic. In a nutshell, stencilling is the use of a cardboard or paper sheet with a cutout of a picture to provide an outline that can be painted over and reproduced easily. The British street artist Banksy devised a clever system of several layers of stencil sheets that can be used to create very elaborate paintings in a very short amount of time:

A simpler example:

Here is a bare bones tutorial on stencilling, to get you started if you're interested:
http://www.onelegout.com/stencil_tutorial.html
There are some other street artists who have very unique styles and prefer to make art differently than the generic forms. Space Invader is an example, a French street artist who recreates video game art with deconstructed Rubik's Cubes:

If there are any other artists that people feel should be mentioned, tell me and I'll add it to the OP.
Resources
As for resources, many types of street art, especially wheat pasting are usually homebrew and supplies run very cheap (paper and paste). For those of you that don't have access to some of those things, specifically spray paint if you want to get a little bit more serious, there are places where you can get your resources dirt cheap:

If you do any kind of stencilling, wheat pasting or other form of the loose term "street art", please feel free to post. Also feel free to post pictures of street art you happen to like or have seen.
We also now have a group on Steam, where you can chat more about street art and join us in different art projects that we coordinate together:

I thought that phone booth was spray paint art for a second. :psyduck:
I saw the space invaders while I was in Paris a few weekends back. I didn't think anything of it. I wish I took a picture.
I saw a sticker slapped on an old wall that said "Don't give up hope" or something like that. I was actually really surprised because I rarely see good things come from street art.
I also found one that said Spread the Word

Some idiot went around my neighbourhood and wrote on all the stopsings, like "Don't STOP beleivin' or "STOP hammer time"
Ever. Single. One.

Yeah, I don't have the privilege of having all the good street art. All I get around here is some thug or dick spray painting their name on something and its not the creative type either.
I've been wheat pasting for a number of years. Fun stuff, really exhilarating.
well someone just watched exit through the gift shop.
This thread needs more Blek Le Rat.

I've worked with stencils and plan to do so when my hand gets well, but I also find and photograph stencils and graffiti, which I picked up after fishsticks

I find that graffity and street art is a great way to critisize or give feedback to the society

is that in a skatepark in london, near the london eye?
I love street art. Graffiti isn't really up my alley and any person who ever tags should die a horrible death in hell.
I got a couple books on the subject, Grafitti Planet, a smaller book and one from Banksy. I plan to get the street art: The graffiti revolution book from Tate Modern at some point.
I loved how Exit Through The Gift Shop took this brilliant twist around the end in how they perceived Mr. Brainwash.

I saw Exit Through The Gift Shop in 2010 when it came out, thanks.
Great idea for a thread and one which I hoped would get going on FP, but you've kind of dropped the ball with the content..
Not very much of it, and you've done all the information yourself from your own knowledge/opinions
I mean you could have mentioned that part of why Obey is so famous and widespread is because it was a collective viral campaign based on his design. He's not a legitimate street artist at all really, the stickering was done by the skating community and he dubbed it "an experiment in phenomenology." Maybe he had a message to spread once upon a time, but he's used his popularity for profit by turning Obey into a clothing brand. It's not at all impressive that something an mainstream and conformist would be well known. Just for example.
Also it would have been good to post detailed information and step-by-step tutorials on stencilling, pasting and spray techniques, along with brands, websites/other resources, caps, materials, DIY tips, all of that sort of thing. Basically advice from someone experienced, or at least who has done a lot of research and tried things for themselves. A few seconds on Google would find you much more accurate and complete info than what you've provided here, so the only real hope I can see for this thread to last is if other people post their pieces, but I don't think there's enough FPers around here that do it for that..

Thats a bit harsh, but i have to agree. Try and find some tutorials, i have a book of guerilla art, that shows you how to do wheat pasting, seed bombs, moss graffiti and other cool stuff.
I have tons of books and resources that teach that stuff, I just didn't know there were going to be people that wanted this thread that diverse. I know a lot about the subject myself, I honestly just didn't this thread was going anywhere. It was more of a way to share some different art without clogging up the other sections.
[editline]19th July 2011[/editline]
Fairey is an artist by the way. That's what he went to college for. He has a lot of other pieces not involving his experiment.
I honestly just didn't this thread was going anywhere
Why post it then? You should aim to make a thread that will help people succeed with an art form, especially if you're not going to post your own work
It wouldn't be diverse either, it's just the difference between a really good OP on the subject and a scant one like you have.. But it's not too late, if you say you have the resources to provide all of that. It would take a while to to make but then it'd be a really good thread IMO
Fairey is an artist by the way. That's what he went to college for. He has a lot of other pieces not involving his experiment.
Sure he's an artist, that doesn't mean he's not also a sellout from the point of view of street artists
A lot of street art sources seem to have a rather negative light on those artists who go from the streets to the galleries.
Banksy earns a fuckton of money from his art, exhibitions, books, movie and prints. However, given his statement of how he mainly gives the money away to charity makes people get less harsh on his method of making off-the-street art for profit.
saw this recently, thought I'd share

He never wanted to make art for the money, people just took a liking to it.
people just took a liking to it.
And he took advantage to that. He's over rated and kind of a douche. He's not really standing up for anything anymore, if he ever did, and he doesn't put up his own stuff really anymore, the only thing he does do is collects money from Obey.
There's a lot more deserving artists that should be in the OP, maybe examples of each style of graffiti, or maybe like a history of it. This thread is 3/4 Banksy+Obey

Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about, because Banksy didn't invent the Obey experiment. The thread isn't even 2 pages, it doesn't really matter what it's about. Seriously, stop arguing over something you have no idea about.
mac is one the best in my opinion

Uhm what
Terrible reading
[editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
Also I'm pretty sure it does matter what a thread is about!
One time I painted faces on a bunch of big upright concrete pipes in a construction area near a highway. I figured they were going in the ground anyway.
Someone in my old town was notorious for stenciling hearts in little hidden places downtown. It was cool when you found one.

That was in reply to a post about Banksy. You can't read that badly. Maybe you should check your reading yourself. I mean the first page of the thread. The world isn't going to end if the first page is a little off topic.
Banksy+Obey as in 3/4ths of this thread is about Banksy plus Obey(Shephard Fairey). Plus meaning the word and. I know exactly what I'm talking about. If you knew what you were talking about, the OP would be more substantial. It's not my shit thread though, so do with it what you want I guess.
My first paragraph was about Fairey, I thought the reply before was about him. Either way, OP is almost empty.

This thread was originally a place for people to post graffiti and street art related pictures. It's not my fault people demanded things such as tutorials on how to wheat paste and other little tweaks to the direction of this thread. Yes, if that's what people would rather see I could update the OP. But if you're going to be a dick about it I can leave it the way I want and bring it in the direction I want because like you said it's my shit OP.

I went on a wheat pasting spree a while back and pasted this picture all over my town:

I don't think I did it enough for people to really start noticing, but I would love to try it again sometime. Not sure if I can get pictures I don't really remember the spots I hit and if they are still there.
You wheat pasted the V mask? I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was arguing with an autistic person.
You wheat pasted the V mask? I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was arguing with an autistic person.
You just lost all credibility as a sane person who can maturely talk about the topic in the OP. You joined a week ago and are making autistic jokes. I went on my spree before it became "gay" to even mention the Fawkes mask. I'm done arguing, thanks.
