Oklahoma Plans To Use Nitrogen For Executions
You'd think the last few botched executions would be deterrent enough to 'experiment' on more.
Or... they could drop executions? please?
Nitrogen is arguably not very "experimental".
It's an inert gas. Since it's not CO2 some of the effects from suffocation are absent. You become lightheaded, pass out, and die.
If drugs are such a problem, there's plenty of other methods available.
This right here. You don't even know you're suffocating.
Aside from the psychological lead up to the event, the actual method is probably the most humane out there.
Still, its a solution to a problem that shouldn't be the.
I'd rather be killed by nitrogen than lethal injection or other forms of execution. From what I understand you don't notice a thing and it's pretty quick.
It's a pretty weird quirk of biology that our body is built to only notice the buildup of CO2 and not the lack of Oxygen, when you think about it.
I'd rather get strapped to a comically large explosive but that's just a personal thing
Honestly I don't know why states are fighting so hard for executions, not really seeing how it makes politicians any money. Unless I'm just missing something.
CO2 causes some fairly easy to detect (acidification) chemical changes, and worked well enough for mammals.
In other species (Aves, IIRC), they can detect a wider range of suffocation inducing gasses.
actually this is probably the most humane form of execution, we know exactly what nitrogen induced hypoxia does to someone, and it basically makes them drunk. a whiff of pure nitrogen deliberately introduced would be nearly instantly fatal as well so there's no worry about botching it there.
now the problem is that that is too nice for most of the proponents of execution. they want it to be a punishment, not something that leaves them laughing or just instantly dead.
It's hard to say for sure if this is a good thing. There's a hell of a lot less that can go wrong, but this will also make executions much easier to perform. No one on Earth will ever run out of nitrogen.
If I'm being executed at all, I want immediate death. Gas or injection does not do that, as soon as they turn it on, I know I'm dying.
There is no warning. Its odorless, colorless, and tasteless, and death happens within seconds. They'd wheel you into a room. Tell you to wait there for the procedure to take place, and then you'd die. You would never know what hit you. It's about as immediate as you can get without strapping you to a 2000 pound bomb.
If I ever get sentenced to death, I want the state to fashion a helmet with like 8 shotgun slugs fastened all around the helmet aimed at my head, and strap it to my head. Kind of like the shotgun collar from SAW, but all around my head instead of around my neck. Then I want them to make a remote detonator for it, to blow my head to smithereens instantly. Then, I want them to bring in a television set that's playing something interesting like Beavis and Butthead or something to distract me for a bit. After a random amount of time has elapsed, the remote detonator is triggered and I instantly die.
I can't really think of any cons other than being forced to have a closed casket funeral. Or being cremated.
Gotta look tough on crime.
gotta go out like the dentist from little shop of horrors

I mean, the alternative is to just not execute people. Which is fine, I'm okay with that alternative, but I guess being the most humane barbarians around is at least better than the death penalty being something like everyone gets to take a crack at the prisoner with a bat until they die.
Honestly, I'd wanna go out like the one skit in Monty Python's Meaning of Life.
This country is retarded every now and then.
like 70% of the time
Nitrogen is like hanging but without the kinkiness.
