Starbreeze Studios has announced that Payday 2 has become profitable six days before launch. They are in black. The money publisher 505 Games invested in the game has been covered by pre-orders.
“Today Starbreeze has once again demonstrated that our strategy of focusing on our own properties is correct. Not only have we managed to deliver a desirable product in Payday 2 but also executed a promotion that few companies of our size can,” the statement read.
Good on them. Payday 2 beta has been really good and I can't wait for the full game. It has been a massive improvement from the original game is pretty much every aspect in which a sequel should be.
Lets make some money..
That's enough for Vlad, but if you want more, go get it. I'll wait here.
I guess robbery is a profitable business.
Probably because they didn't spend 3/4 of the game's budget on advertising, and realized that as long as you make a good product, the word about it will spread quickly on its own.
I wish I had a PC so I could pay this. Watching videos of this is hilarious when somebody fucks up and awesome when stealth actually works. :v:

Well they've had a spot on steam's front page ticker for a while, but I think Valve takes a cut for that, not a set amount of money in advance.
Some companies need to take notice of this.
Create a good game and don't spend 20 times the cost it should for a particular project.
I don't see why vg marketing should even be that expensive these days. Give out free copies to all the popular Lets Players, do an AMA on reddit, and say something newsworthy like a big anti-DRM rant.
Now everyone is talking about your game. Of course this will only work if the game's not shit

The problem is that the AAA industry is trying to be like Hollywood.
...Except that the system Hollywood uses is used out of necessity. For live action movies atleast. It's costs ALOT of money and manpower to do stuff like planning stunts, hiring actors and staff and generally trying to develop something that's atleast a hour and a half long, so they need a relatively big marketing campaign to bring in money, otherwise it would be all for nothing.
Games don't have that problem because it's all on a computer with not much of a live element. Indie games have been able to sell tons without having to rely on hugely costly advertising (Hotline Miami, Minecraft etc) and the older generations were more than able to sell successfully when the dev teams were more than likely a couple of guys doing it as more of a hobby.
It's not getting more expensive because it's getting bigger naturally, it's getting more expensive because the industry is forcing it to be more costly and larger than it should be. And then they complain they only got 3 million sales which can't make up for needlessly expensive advertising.

Aren't they selling exclusively through Steam? [del]Also, it's source engine based.[/del]
It's entirely within Valve's best interest for them to succeed.

It's not the source engine, why would you even think that?

I haven't played the 1 nor the 2, but I always thought both were on Source. My bad, then.

Well, I wouldn't call Payday 2 to be exactly a good game. It's a game that has it's moments, for sure. But there are still bugs, in which, from what the guy who visited this forum said, being ironed out and constantly being fixed or tweaked.
So I can really only speculate. He also said there was going to be DLC after release, which helps with replay ability. I just hope they don't go the route of charging $30 for a season pass, or $10+ for one DLC. Unless it's something major, like an actual expansion. I'm talking a lot of new heists, weapons, masks, skins, etc.

If it's not going to be new heists, weapons, masks nor skins, what would it be? That's kind of the only noteworthy thing to even make DLC about.
Payday 2 being this good was totally unexpected.
It came out of nowhere and I've had so much fun with this game ,playing some of the big heists is such a rush with the A+ soundtrack.
It's only in beta too!

They might bring back British Hoxton from the first game. People have a petition to try and make that happen.

Nothing wrong with that either I'd say.

The games have kickass soundtracks, seriously
honestly any game that gives you multiple options for the color correction is probably worth paying attention to. it's a tiny thing but i fucking love it when games do that

Good PC development goes a long way. Hell, that's not exclusive to PC. A good product is a good product period.

Except then general public is unlikely to hear about the game. Publishers don't spend money on advertising because they just love to waste money on frivolous things.
That's it.
I'm buying Payday 2.

Well yes and no.
No advertising budget means less copies to be sold to break even.
Well yes and no.

No advertising budget means less copies being sold in general. Meaning its harder to break even.
No advertising budget means less copies being sold in general. Meaning its harder to break even.
It just means it all hinges on the game itself instead. Good marketing can make a bad game sell, but a bad game won't sell itself, while a good game can sell from word of mouth alone.
