(CNN) – For all the attention paid to the clout of fiscally focused tea party conservatives and of the primacy of jobs in the 2012 election, Rick Santorum’s trifecta victories Tuesday night are a good reminder of the powerful role religious conservatives play in the GOP. They fueled Santorum’s wins in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado – and his earlier victory in the Iowa caucuses.
But why, exactly, do religious conservatives love the former senator from Pennsylvania? There are obvious reasons – his advocacy against abortion and same-sex marriage, for instance – but plenty of less obvious ones, too.
Here’s my list. What would you add?
1 .Santorum’s a family man. “He’s got this big, vibrant family and he left the campaign trail last week to go back and be with his daughter in the hospital,” says Eli Bremer, chairman of Colorado's El Paso County Republican Party, centered around evangelical-heavy Colorado Springs. Santorum recently returned to Pennsylvania to respond to a health scare involving daughter Isabella – the youngest of his seven children – who suffers from a genetic disease. “I spent time with him last year, and he’s constantly thinking about his family,” Bremer says of Santorum. “It’s not just a political stunt.”

2. He’s not averse to getting politically incorrect when donning culture warrior chain mail. “So if the baby’s toe is in you can’t kill the baby – how about if the baby’s foot is in?” he famously asked U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, in a 1999 debate over a rare, later term abortion procedure that anti-abortion groups call a "partial birth" abortion.

3. Santorum’s a homeschooling dad. His wife, Karen, is homeschooling or has homeschooled their seven children, making them a poster family for a movement populated largely by evangelical Christians and other serious believers. “It matters because it shows he’s a real part of our movement rather than simply someone who is politically sympathetic,” says Michael Farris, an evangelical conservative who leads the Home School Legal Defense Association.

4. He’s a devout cradle Catholic. As a kid in Pennsylvania, Santorum the altar boy would spend Sunday mornings pushing hospital patients in wheelchairs to Mass. As a U.S. senator, Santorum attended Mass at St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill each day before work. That piety gets respect with religious voters, regardless of affiliation. “Evangelicals have made him an honorary evangelical,” said Richard Land, public policy chief for the Southern Baptist Convention.

5. Santorum’s not Mitt Romney. Millions of socially conservative voters still distrust the former Massachusetts governor on the hot button issues – abortion and same-sex marriage. Some, though not all, are put off by Romney’s Mormonism.

6. Santorum’s not Newt Gingrich. Many social conservatives, particularly those of the female persuasion, continue to be turned off by Gingrich’s two failed marriages and his admissions of past marital infidelity.

7. Santorum doesn’t just talk about opposing abortion, he’s legislated on it. As a senator, he was an architect of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003. He pushed the ban even in the1990s, when Bill Clinton was in the White House and the legislation stood nary a chance of a presidential signature. “He walked the walk,” Land says. “When no one else would carry our water in the Senate, he would.”

8. Ditto on same-sex marriage. Santorum sponsored a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage at a time when many Republicans lawmakers didn’t want to touch such a hot potato.

9. Santorum’s big on compassionate conservatism. Though he gets the most ink for controversial stances on issues such as homosexuality, Santorum has also been a leading advocate for funding to fight AIDS in the Third World and has led conservative responses to poverty. “A lot of people have a hard time getting Rick Santorum because they’re used to a debate between liberalism and complete free-market approach and he’s not either of those things,” says Michael Gerson, a Washington Post columnist and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush.

10. Santorum isn’t afraid to challenge science, questioning the theory of evolution and dismissing global warming as “a hoax.” The former senator “confirms (social conservatives’) view of science as being at odds with a Christian worldview,” tweets Warren Throckmorton, a psychology professor at Grove City College, an evangelical Christian school in Pennsylvania.
[/release]

They're all ignorant reasons to vote for him, but simply saying "he's not person X" is just down right retarded.
And since when is "fighting AIDS" a conservative position - let alone any kind of political position?
Why? How? What?
Fuck me. Fuck me. Fuck me.
I'm signed into my bro's account. This is Hidole555.
Rick Santorum hates gays, TAA hates women. All the same. :v:
"Compassionate conservatism"? HAH!
Why? How? What?
Why? Because he puts his religious beliefs before anything and everything, making him a dangerous politician.
How? Simply by putting his fingers in his ears and saying "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU"
What? He's retarded.
10 reasons not to support Rick Santorum unless you watch fox news 24/7 and own a case of tinfoil hats.
That's better. Sorry about any confusion I made.

That isn't challenging science. That is denying reality.
The only possibly valid thing here would maybe the family man trait. I think being close to your family like that is a good quality, though how politically significant it is I can't say much for.
Good thing, but hardly something to base a presidential vote on.
the last one makes me want to weep
1 .Santorum’s a family man. “He’s got this big, vibrant family and he left the campaign trail last week to go back and be with his daughter in the hospital,” says Eli Bremer, chairman of Colorado's El Paso County Republican Party, centered around evangelical-heavy Colorado Springs. Ok, that's nice, but i'm p sure all the other political candidates give a shit about their families too.
2. He’s not averse to getting politically incorrect when donning culture warrior chain mail. “So if the baby’s toe is in you can’t kill the baby – how about if the baby’s foot is in?” he famously asked U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, in a 1999 debate over a rare, later term abortion procedure that anti-abortion groups call a "partial birth" abortion.
what a retard
3. Santorum’s a homeschooling dad. His wife, Karen, is homeschooling or has homeschooled their seven children, making them a poster family for a movement populated largely by evangelical Christians and other serious believers. “It matters because it shows he’s a real part of our movement rather than simply someone who is politically sympathetic,” says Michael Farris, an evangelical conservative who leads the Home School Legal Defense Association.
big whoop this has nothing to do with his political views at all
“Evangelicals have made him an honorary evangelical,” said Richard Land, public policy chief for the Southern Baptist Convention.
more personal religion horseshit, can we get to some of his political points? or are we just avoiding those for a good reason.
5. Santorum’s not Mitt Romney. Millions of socially conservative voters still distrust the former Massachusetts governor on the hot button issues – abortion and same-sex marriage. Some, though not all, are put off by Romney’s Mormonism.
Obama isn't mitt romney either vote obama!!!!
6. Santorum’s not Newt Gingrich. Many social conservatives, particularly those of the female persuasion, continue to be turned off by Gingrich’s two failed marriages and his admissions of past marital infidelity.
you coulda couple this in with answer 5
“When no one else would carry our water in the Senate, he would.”
he thinks that rape victims who get pregnant should just suck it up, even if they can't afford to bring the child up. what an asshole. this is a reason NOT to vote santorum
8. Ditto on same-sex marriage. Santorum sponsored a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage at a time when many Republicans lawmakers didn’t want to touch such a hot potato.
another reason NOT to vote for him
Bush.
conservative responses to poverty? check out how that's worked in the past.
10. Santorum isn’t afraid to challenge science, questioning the theory of evolution and dismissing global warming as “a hoax.” The former senator “confirms (social conservatives’) view of science as being at odds with a Christian worldview,” tweets Warren Throckmorton, a psychology professor at Grove City College, an evangelical Christian school in Pennsylvania.
that's right folks, santorum isn't afraid to challenge scientific evidence resulting from centuries of intensive study because a book told him that the book was right and therefore it is right! win by default. I know I don't want a president who can think for himself.
A couple of reasons why this man would throw the USA back to the stone age.
Santorum doesn’t just talk about opposing abortion, he’s legislated on it. As a senator, he was an architect of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003.
Eugh, need I say more?
1.Santorum sponsored a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage at a time when many Republicans lawmakers didn’t want to touch such a hot potato.
Come on.
Great! Who cares about science and education, it's not like it saves life or any important crap.
The rest of the reasons is just a bunch of: Oh, look at Santorum, he's being nice when his policies is hating other people and legislating what they do.
Fuck Santorum.
so basically vote santorum he's not any of those other dumbass candidates and he cares about family! unless that family is gay, then they can go fuck themselves. fuckin queers.
this article is dumb
and rick santorum is dumb
He's fucking insane, and so are all the other GOP candidates!
He's fucking insane, and so are all the other GOP candidates!
Oh god what did I read
The radical marxist secular left colleges and universities are out to DESTROY AMERICA of course
I wonder if we could just throw every GOP candidate into the funny farm.
One reason to not vote for Rick Santorum: He's fucking nuts and a menace to [del]secular society[/del] scratch that, he's a menace to humanity!
SOMEONE doesn't believe in separation of church and state. >_> Maybe we should amend that into separation of church and government.
Honestly, fuck Santorum, fuck all the GOP candidates. I'm voting Obama, on the grounds that hes the only one who HASN'T lost his fucking mind.
When we're in the 21st century and a key point of a candidate's platform is being religious in a country where religion is not supposed to be part of the government, something's wrong.
Not to mention denying that gay couples should be allowed the same freedoms as heterosexual couples is a belief that comes right outta the fuckin' Renaissance.

How about 10 reasons not to support Santorum?

Being homeschooled means jack shit. I can't really comment further since I don't know his kids or anything, but based on what I've seen of him my expectations of them are already pretty low knowing that he was their primary source of education.
Voting for some one based solely on their religion is completely backwards. Next.
"He's not [x] or [y]" aren't even arguments. Try again.
8. Ditto on same-sex marriage. Santorum sponsored a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage at a time when many Republicans lawmakers didn’t want to touch such a hot potato.
Oh boy, he's a bigoted piece of shit! That sure is a good reason to vote for him!
What I got from that was "Santorum isn't afraid to live in his own little world where established facts and theories with strong evidence behind them mean diddly-shit."
In conclusion I'm pretty baffled as to why this article even exists, unless it's supposed to be very well disguised and depressingly unfunny satire.
How about 10 reasons not to support Santorum?
1. He's a conservative nutcase.
That's the only reason you need.
I hate this man. I hate him with such a passion that it makes me very close to being physically ill at hearing his bullshit. I also hate the people who eat it right up. How the FUCK can someone say that they are "all for family" when they want to deny people both the right to make families and the right to not be in a country filled with bigoted and ignorant fucks. I honestly would not mind if he died.
10. Santorum isn’t afraid to challenge science, questioning the theory of evolution and dismissing global warming as “a hoax.”
Because religion has solid evidence behind it, right?
Because religion has solid evidence behind it, right?
according to "science" the bible is a solid. therefore it is solid evidence. good job proving us right scienSTIFFS rick santorum -1 u -0
How about 10 reasons not to support Santorum?
See the list in OP. Its not a reason to support him, more like a reason to chuck him off a cliff.
NONE of his arguments are politically affiliated. I say this because he spends part of the time talking about his family. Yes, family is important, but being president is about not only your family, but the rest of your fellow countrymen and women. He spends another part of it trying to differentiate himself from Romney and Gingrich. You are a different person Santorum, we get it! He spends the rest of the time using religious beliefs as a political platform. FUCK THAT! This is why I keep quoting separation of church and state. Religion has NO place in politics and yet people like Santorum keep shoving it down our throats like its the fucking law of the land.
Sorry about that rant. On that note, wheres Perry? I haven't heard from his crazy ass in awhile.
