Scouring through the network configuration settings shows a number of administration tools and options that will be available. Given that this is the Xbox 360's configuration settings it surprised me to see that the game will support a max number of 32 players, even though the box indicates a max of 16 players. For those of you who have the “common” folder you'll find it in an XML for the network options – you can look through the files if you need verification.

Edit:
A co-op mode is also available, it only supports two-players and I assume this is for the GTA Online story mode. But I don't know, so don't quote me on co-op only being for story mode, it could be like Saints Row where it's just a limit of two-players and you can just run around and do stuff... I don't know.
A free-for-all “Deathmatch” or “DM” mode is also present. Again, it supports up to 32 players – or so, that's what the configuration file is showing.
A “Team Deathmatch” or “TDM” mode is also present. It supports 32 players and a max of two teams.
A “Races” mode is available, again, 32 players.
There's a reference to a multiplayer test bed, but I don't think it's an actual game mode. I could be wrong, though.
A “CnC” or “Cops and Crooks” mode is also present. It looks like there are two gang options and a cop option. It also shows support for up to 32 players.
That would be fucking great!

pls be true. 16 players on this big of a map doesn't tickle my fancy
16 Players was fine with me. 32 though? Yes please. I was playing Tennis earlier in the game and I really hope you can play with other people in GTAO (I haven't looked in to it myself.)
GTA online is going to be so fucking awesome when it launches.
Now if only my internet were stable enough to give me a good experience.
Holy shit a cops n' robbers game mode
Holy shit Cops and crooks seems pretty massive.
Cops can also use the scanner to check license plates for stolen vehicles. If a player is driving a stolen vehicle a squad car may be assigned to arrest them.
Cops also get a locker room where they can change their police clothes, it seems to suggest there are ranks for different outfits.
Cops have a special mission where they are assigned to do "fetch" quests. The wording of the script appears to suggest that this is a low-level mission and maybe something assigned to a player of a low reputation.
Cops also have "territories" to patrol. Patrolling the correct territory for crime will reward the cop; the wording suggests that this is similar to APB's Prestige system and the more the rules are followed the higher the rewards.
32 players would be freaking awesome, but I remain skeptical.
How many console games support that many players?
The map is huge enough to support a lot more than that. Sadly the consoles are what holds the game back.
how will Online work anyway.?
how will Online work anyway.?
Seems like an open world MMOish spin on GTA. Only with all the shit that made GTA IV multiplayer so god damned fun, plus tons of improvements.

I think Battlefield 3 had that much, And don't forget that one game on the PS3 that could hold like 500 or so players.

Mainly shooters, the game is pretty big and with all its physics, cop chases, pedestrians and busy city life going on and that for 32 players is quite a big push for the current gen consoles.
But yeah, 16 is still sweet.
Also this makes me wonder what GTA (Online 2.0) will offer us on the new consoles.
I hope free roam makes a return.
I hope free roam makes a return.
Pretty sure it will. I mean it would be retarded to remove Free roam.
I bet 32 players will be for a Next gen / PC version.
i'm cumming
Fuel of War also started with 32 players but a patch later it was brought up to 50 players.
Funny how the game made by rockstar themselves support only 16 (possibly 32) players, but their old game san andreas has support for 200+, and that multiplayer was created by fans.
Weird innit?

Yeah.. Except thats the PC version and like you said, its San Andreas a much older and less complex game to render(?) then the HD GTA games like GTA IV and V.

Didn't make it to GTA IV which was on PC too. And regardless of which, rendering doesn't make any difference when it comes to networking stuff, it's not like they stream HD graphics, they just stream the most essential of stuff for communication between the clients, rest is done by the client.

That's because San Andreas is old enough for it to not make your PC catch fire from having that much information to process, due to the older/almost non existent physics and a variety of different things. Can't really say it's accurate to compare the two in that manner.

What about Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod? that game is bigger, has more physics, and more of just about everything, no? And last I heard, it supports over 2000 players.

Again, only the PC version.
Edit: You can't be this retarded right?

Well, I am talking about PC versions right now. I dont doubt GTA V will see its release on PC, but I dont doubt either that the playercount will be kept rather low, just like in GTA IV

oh you've got to be kidding me. it's like you completely ignored what we all said and spouted more shit that doesn't apply to this.

Aye sure it does, but it's also not probably a quarter as detailed as GTA Vs systems. The rockstar engine is a mammoth piece of software and information, Just Cause has Havok which in itself is pretty small scale comparatively.
