• Why is it so important to do things "for your country"

I just got in a discussion with my stepdad about the draft I asked what would be the best way to run away from the draft if you've just gotten a letter? He said the best way would be to serve and die for your country. I said "but if i DIDNT want to die, what would i do?" he said "why wouldn't you want to die for your country?" i said "I'd rather not die..." him: "Well then you could become a scientist for your countries military" i said "I wouldn't do that" he says "Why not?" "when you're a scientist for your military, you're a scientist against someone elses. i'd be a scientist for humanity, but not a country" "but those are the bad guys" so on and so forth. then he got into a speech about how the founding fathers risked being hanged and blah blah blah. I eventually came up to my room and made this thread. My stepdad is a "murican" but i want to know why it's so god damned important to do things for your country instead of doing them for yourself, for other people, or for the good of all of humanity? if i had the choice of giving the cure for cancer to the united states and selling it to the entire world, i'd sell it to the entire world, not for the profit, but because i would want to share it with the entire world so EVERYone could get a cure for cancer, not so i can save the u.s... anyway, that's my rant. i just want to know why people are so ready and willing to say the pledge of allegiance for a country that doesn't have "liberty and justice for all" and are so happy to take a bullet in the head for a country that wouldn't do the same.
Ask not what your country can do for you, but how often you can die for your country.
Because people are lured into thinking their country has something special that's worth defending. A collection of ideas, a state of mind, a dream or some abstract shit like that.
proboards you're in like gr 9 nukka please calm down this is a time when you're supposed to eat KD and look at chicks tits and try 2 talk to them over facebook got it isn't this the same dad you made a topic about who is a mac fan and plays Quake on his mac while rocking out to techno cause then like hes totally right m8 p.s stay str8
It isn't. Unless it is. Basically, don't let other people tell you what should be important to you.
Other people are going. It's your duty to go.
What is a country other than the people that live in it? Without people living in a country, and without people willing to die for the country, a country is nothing.
Grow a pair.
I'd rather have an occupation in which I'm not getting shot at; the army is for people who feel that they owe something, or for people who just wanna shoot up some towel heads. (User was banned for this post ("Trolling" - verynicelady))

Dieing for something worth of dieing for is noble, but I'd hate to die for some shitty reasons, like in Iraq, for not even defending my country, but interfering with other countries...
show your love for the motherland, sign your children up for productive factory job.
Grow a pair.
then get them blown off in a godforsaken sandbox
If it was, say, a Proper War (against an actual threat to my nation), then I'D gladly sign up.
Yeah, lets all jump on the Iraq war is bad bandwagon!!!!!! True story bro
yea, because everyone says it's bad, i'm going to be so non-conformist and say that it's good! :c00l:
Loyalty to ones country and it's peoples.
It's supporting and representing your society. It doesn't mean that you can't do things to benefit all of humanity. Also, running from the draft is looked down upon because you're effectively deserting your friends, family, neighbors, etc.
Some people feel the need to give something back to the country that has housed, fed and supplied them with pretty much everything they have for their entire lives.
yea, because everyone says it's bad, i'm going to be so non-conformist and say that it's good! :c00l:
Wow, you seem pretty non-conformist bro.
list of "proper wars" since the end of World War 2: ...
The war on drugs... lol
Yeah, lets all jump on the Iraq war is bad bandwagon!!!!!!
maybe it's not a bandwagon maybe the Iraq war actually is bad
Because everyone thinks their country is right and is the best while all others are bad and wrong.
maybe it's not a bandwagon maybe the Iraq war actually is bad
Well, that's like your opinion man.
Because everyone thinks their country is right and is the best while all others are bad and wrong.
Fallacies are bad man.
Yeah, lets all jump on the Iraq war is bad bandwagon!!!!!!
:bandwagon: But seriously, I'd rather have "Defended his home at the greatest cost a man can give" on my tombstone than "I went to search some WMDs and all I got was this lousy tombstone" Not saying the Iraq war is throughout some oil-illuminati-plot, USA had to do something on terrorism after :911: so not judging for that...
list of "proper wars" since the end of World War 2: ...
Exactly my point, which is why I'm not signing up.
I for one would be the first US'er into canada after they announced a draft.
Ask him what's the point of dying for your country? How does that help? Why not live for your country and fight another day.
