Tens of thousands of people are marching in protest at the government's austerity measures.
Labour leader Ed Miliband is among dozens of speakers addressing crowds at the biggest march in London. Other rallies are taking place in Glasgow and Belfast.
Demonstrators want the coalition to end public service cuts and instead create policies they say can create growth.
The government says austerity measures are vital to cutting the deficit.
Union leaders recently criticised Labour for supporting a public sector pay freeze.
'Wages falling'
Organiser Trades Union Congress (TUC), which says workers and campaigners from across the UK are involved with the demonstration, estimates that 100,000 people are taking part while the Met Police has not released an estimate.
That compares with the more than 250,000 people who took part in a London anti-cuts march and rally in March 2011.
Banners on display have included those reading "Cameron has butchered Britain", "no cuts" and "plebs on parade" - a reference to the row that led to the resignation of government chief whip Andrew Mitchell.
Demonstrators were brought to London in more than 250 coaches.
Earlier this month, Mr Cameron warned more "painful decisions" would be necessary to repair the UK economy, adding that he would not waver from austerity measures.
And on Saturday, around the time of the start of the London march, he posted a message on Twitter stating: "Today Ed Miliband is headlining a rally calling for an end to every single spending cut needed to clear the deficit #labourisntlearning."

reduce tax on highest earners in the country
take money out of low-cost social programs and infrastructure
wonder why everyone slightly impartial to the left hates you
"plebs on parade" :v:
Disaprove of this protests as I am quite warming to the idea of tory britain just think going to sainsburys hospital to pay for your cancer treatment you also gain nectar points.
I heard Ed Miliband got booed for supporting austerity.
Why can't these people understand that cuts have to be made, you can't just borrow until there's no money left at all, it's borrowing that caused the recession and more borrowing won't solve it.

Because the whole point is that you borrow money and use that money to buy things and kickstart the economy, creating more jobs and creating more wealth. Then you pay back the debts after it's multiplied itself.
It makes a lot more sense than cutting back, which means that fewer things are going to be bought, which means that less is produced and less is made, leading to lower profits and therefore fewer jobs made, or even more redundancies.
You can't have something for nothing, you need money to start up businesses, and that money's not going to be found without borrowing and making reasonable cuts in the right areas (the Tories cuts are in the wrong areas). Unresponsible borrowing is what harms the economy as much as unresponsible cuts.
The things that caused the recession were numerous and all different, I won't even pretend to understand why, but as far as I know, a large portion of it was banks borrowing and swapping mortgages and the like with each other, with very little care being taken.

Not in the way that the Tories are doing it. Nevermind the fact that the cuts have done nothing and we're actually borrowing more.

But has that ever worked? When does it become unresponisble and how can you trust one to borrow responsibly? People need to learn to live more frugally and be thankful they even have jobs.

Except a lot of people don't have jobs because of Tory cuts

Can't live frugally if you have no job due to budget cutbacks forcing industry to make redundancies.
Cutbacks are unresponsible if they harm the economy directly, such as shutting down mines suddenly and laying off all of the workers.

america from 1940-1960 did it pretty goddamn well lmao back before the republicans went all austerity crazy and started fucking our economy up the ass

Isn't the fact that austerity was need proof that it didn't work very well?
Whilst you might not like the Tory cuts, the borrowing costs at the moment are stupidly low, whereas if we were to start spending more, bond yields would go up exponentially and we might lose our credit ratings. In the end, whilst I disagree with some of the cuts, probably the main reason we are in recession is our main trading partners, the Eurozone, are currently having their problems.
Spending more will result in the UK having spiralling borrowing costs.

austerity has never worked lol

the only thing America ever 'needed' austerity for was so it could funnel more money into proxy wars against the soviet union and the pockets of billionaire industrialists

The problem is that government's lack of control and moral conscience in the economy results in the most vulnerable people being hurt through social service cuts. Why should the working person have to pay for the shitty management skills of some rich assholes?
Why don't these fuckers live off of a minimum wage before they make cuts that effect these people?
