Something great, something big, something very special that's never happened before is about to happen! On July 19, 2013, the Cassini spacecraft, currently in orbit around Saturn, will be turned to image that planet and its entire ring system during an eclipse of the sun, as it has done twice before during its previous 9 years in orbit. But this time will be very different. This time, the images collected will capture, in natural color, a glimpse of our own planet alongside Saturn and its rings on a day that will be the first time the Earth's inhabitants know in advance their picture is being taken from a billion miles away.

CASSINI IMAGE TIMES Cassini's wide-angle camera will acquire a full end-to-end mosaic of images of Saturn's ring system over the course of 4 hours on July 19. The Earth, which will be near the rings, will be captured in a series of both wide-angle and narrow-angle camera images taken between 21:27 to 21:42 UTC on that day. Those times translated into the US time zones are: EDT: 5:27-5:42 pm CDT: 4:27-4:42 pm MDT: 3:27-3:42 pm PDT: 2:27-2:42 pm To see more go here: http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/news/waveatsaturn/timezones/
http://thedaytheearthsmiled.com/info.php#about One of the previous times they did something like this: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/gfpri86.jpg[/img_thumb]
Fuck, my eyes were closed
I wonder what the FOV on that camera will be. For earth even to be visible in a picture of Saturn, it's gotta be zoomed in to an insane degree.
Is it me or would the first picture make a really good album cover.
I'm gonna sue for taking a photo of me without my consent.
I smiled.
Wallpaper ho!
im gonna moon them
I wonder what the FOV on that camera will be.
im gonna moon them
Don't worry, Earth's already on the job.
That first picture looks so weird to me, like the center doesn't match up with space around it.
Fuck yes! I have the pic in the OP as my desktop background, can't wait for the new one :)
I set my alarm. I will be outside trying to smile at I guess the fucking sun.
I set my alarm. I will be outside trying to smile at I guess the fucking sun.
smile away from the sun
Thanks for the background [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5831868/Monitor/desktop%2019.07.2013.png[/t] Pretty amazing how they're able to snap that then send it aaaaaaaall the way over to us.
So I go outside and wave/smile for 15 minutes in 40 minutes?
Or you don't, since you're not going to be in the picture anyway...
Standing naked outside for this one. [editline]19th July 2013[/editline] And we're done.
I stood out for 20 minutes, waved, and smiled at the sky at several angles. The neighbors must think I've gone mad. [editline]19th July 2013[/editline] Wait they aren't going all Google Earth?
I was taking a shit fuck
I walked around for like 4 minutes and smiled.
You guys have to take the speed of light into account, since the spacecraft is a billion miles away. [editline]19th July 2013[/editline] It takes about an hour and a half for light from earth to reach the spacecraft.
Why do we have to take that into account?
Oh, whoops, didn't read, those times posted have already taken speed of light into account.
