I thought I obviously knew nothing about dubstep, but having heard a few albums from both ends of the spectrum. I've made my mind up that the new era of "Post-Dubstep", is really what dubstep should have been all along. No offense to anyone please because I did enjoy Benga's album. My idea of dubstep, is this thick textured, crisp collection of sounds that are fused with these garage style beats that really add to the atmosphere. As compared to the majority of "the people's idea of Dubstep" which is pretty much drum and bass with a bit more bass. Thoughts?
:pwn: [editline]12th December 2011[/editline] now I've NEVER heard anything like that before.
i'm pretty sure trv dvbstep is another thing all together, the old stuff like Skream and all that. i guess we can get away with calling this stuff post dubstep though. anyways who cares this stuff is great, Untrue is a suitable soundtrack for so many occasions in my life.
I thought Trv was just "True" as in those dumb True Black Metal arguements. :v:
Awesome thread man, I love this stuff. Hopefully next year we'll see another Burial album. It's been way too long since Untrue.
It really is the music that works 100 times better when outdoors with over-ear headphones. It just fits with life.
I've listened to Untrue a few times through, not sure I've had enough time to fully digest it though. Its definitely enjoyable if a bit homogenous. I think I will check out some post-dubstep though, I thought James Blake's stuff that I heard was pretty enjoyable.
The thing with Burial, is that it requires you to be familiar with the vibes beforehand in order to enjoy it more. It's definitely more "garage" than dubstep, but the crackling sounds and ambience just really take you on edge.
I thought Trv was just "True" as in those dumb True Black Metal arguements. :v:
lol that's what I meant too. there's like original dupstep (skream), mostly annoying harsh sounding stuff (skrillex) and this post stuff (burial)
lol that's what I meant too. there's like original dupstep (skream), mostly annoying harsh sounding stuff (skrillex) and this post stuff (burial)
Weird that Burial is being considered post-dubstep considering he came before both Skream and Skrillex
The thing with Burial, is that it requires you to be familiar with the vibes beforehand in order to enjoy it more. I'll probably give it another good listen after I get my Sennheiser HD201's for Christmas.
Weird that Burial is being considered post-dubstep considering he came before both Skream and Skrillex
i jut mentioned skream as one example of the old stuff but dubstep in it's old form was around before burial released anything. and i don't know if burial fits into that or not, theres a lot of ambient stuff in what he does that sets it apart
Burial reminds me of walking in shitty weather in England, that's why I love it. Untrue is just really good at capturing that feeling
I don't get "old-form" of dubstep. Wouldn't that be some kind of trip-hop/techno/breakbeat thing? [editline]8th December 2011[/editline]
Burial reminds me of walking in shitty weather in England, that's why I love it. Untrue is just really good at capturing that feeling
Listened to it today, weather was horrendous but I had a warm feeling inside :3
I think the post-dubstep tag is unnecessary because the style is in the same vein as the original sound of dubstep. Seriously, "post-dubstep" sounds like "pre-brostep". In fact, post-dubstep was developing alongside filth.
Burial reminds me of walking in shitty weather in England, that's why I love it.
This is the best metaphor for his music I've ever heard.
I honestly think that coming from a dark, grey and rainy place like Essex helps me understand the feel that the album captures better than if I was from like SoCal or something
SoCal or something
Ha, I live here. Coincidentally I don't really fancy his music. I can see how it would be useful to listen to though.
Ha, I live here. Coincidentally I don't really fancy his music. I can see how it would be useful to listen to though.
come live in my shitty student digs with me in Canterbury over next autumn and winter, looking out the window to see grey skies and trees having their last leaves shaken from their wooden extremities, desperately clinging on to the last remnants of the summer months. See people huddled within coats against the vitriolic and aggressive winds that rattle down high streets, whistling dead tunes from the bottom of their lungless vocals. See the look of resignation ingrained into the faces of those that walk the pavements, jaws clenched as they push through the gales. Look up to the sky and see no blue, no colours of any sort, just a monochrome nightmare that rolls on for miles. Go back to the shitty student digs, well aware that your heating has been cut off due to missed payments. Sit on your ratty, dying couch in full coats and sweaters, huddled together shivering violently, praying for night so that you can just sleep. Smoke and drink whisky aggressively, just because you need some warmth within you to last these months, even if the warmth is killing you. When you've felt that, Burial just seems so much more empathic. Whoa what the fuck did I just write
What the fuck. [sp]Still gonna read it though <3[/sp]
sbtrkt is a huge inspiration to me, i guess im gonna have to look further into this genre at some point nice post!
Winner thread Nice one Akyz can always count on you to deliver a great and plenty of info thread.
heh. i got stuck in vancouver once (i like over an hour away) because me and my friend missed the last train home from a Boris concert. Listening to Untrue in some creepy McDonald's at like 1 am (and the car ride home) is perfect. I love when music seems to be tailored to a certain situation in your life :3 and akz, check out El B. I just like that stuff because it sounds really stripped down (the dub influences are more apparent), so it has this kinda clean sound I can't really describe. like you can hear the space in between the beats, whereas brostep is just kinda an overload of stuff that's kinda boring to me. (and thats the extent of my dubstep knowledge :p)
Anyone heard of Swarms? This track is sweet, still need to grab their new album.
yeah this is my kinda dubstep.
I have to agree completely, but I don't like the elitism that's taking place among some artists; most notably James Blake.
post dubstep. It's almost as if adding post to something makes it automatically better than the original stuff.
this is future garage! also, they're hardly elitist. if calling something out for what it is should be considered elitist that's just silly.

Sometimes grey can mean other things than dull. :v: [editline]9th December 2011[/editline]
this is future garage!.
Scrap that genre name.
Scrap that genre name.
why? it's a hell of a lot better than post-dubstep.
It really is the music that works 100 times better when outdoors with over-ear headphones. It just fits with life.
Dark moody music, for walking down the street on dark moody days. [editline]9th December 2011[/editline] Old dubstep often got called grime before dubstep.
Burial is more the sound of London at night in the rain for me. Some of the best music i've heard easily.
Old dubstep often got called grime.
So that's another bastardized genre down the drain.
