http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/23/us/georgia-governor-signs-gun-bill/
Ellijay, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a wide-ranging gun bill into law Wednesday that has critics howling and proponents applauding. House Bill 60, or the Safe Carry Protection Act of 2014 -- which opponents have nicknamed the "guns everywhere bill" -- specifies where Georgia residents can carry weapons. Included are provisions that allow residents who have concealed carry permits to take guns into some bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports. GeorgiaCarry, which lobbied for the bill, calls it "meaningful pro-gun legislation," despite it being watered down from the group's perspective. Still, the group has lauded the legislation, which will go into effect July 1. Americans for Responsible Solutions opposed the bill, calling it "extremism in action."
I just want to clarify that about the schools, churches, and government buildings; Schools: certain staff memebers who have been trained will be allowed to carry their weapons, not everyone. The school can also choose not to allow it Churches: it is 100% up to the church whether or not to allow them inside Government buildings: only non-secure government buildings, and then only in common areas Airports: people can carry their weapons into common areas before any security checks This law basically just makes it so you don't have to take your gun off before you enter some of these places, and allows school and church security to be armed. Since this is a concealed carry law, I wouldn't expect any change in how many guns you actually see, since the whole point of concealed carry is that you do not know who has one. Only people who are wearing their guns in plain view would have been affected before this law, and they are usually assholes anyway. Churches and businesses that disallow concealed carry are usually just trying to stop the assholes who wear them on their hip in plain view from coming in and ... well being assholes about it. They wouldn't know if you had it concealed, so they couldn't very well kick you out anyway.
Why are churches specified like it's some sort of special venue?
Why are churches specified like it's some sort of special venue?
Probably for the same reason why selling drugs in the vicinity of one carries a harsher penalty, they usually have a lot of kids around them. Especially ones that have sunday school/private schooling.
Honestly it's hardly "extremism in action." It specifies concealed carry, which means odds are you'd never know if somebody chose to exercise the additional freedoms allowed by this bill - in fact, they would be breaking the law if you could see their gun! This isn't going to make it easier for shooters to get places they shouldn't and it's not gonna make it easier for anyone to commit crimes.
People who go through the effort of getting a concealed carry permit are generally safe and responsible gun owners so I don't see too much of an issue with this as a resident.
I've heard rumors at my school that the principal has kept a .32 or .44 in his desk for quite some time.
I've heard rumors at my school that the principal has kept a .32 or .44 in his desk for quite some time.
Holy shit. A .44 indoors would be fucking deafening. I've only shot one once without earpro and my ears were ringing for about 2 hours afterwards. And that was outside
Ban open carry in general. Open carry is stupid and honestly only paints you as a target to someone who would be shooting other people. Also we should ban all forms of weapons in bars, drugs and weapons are NOT a good combination. Georgia, you're a really stupid state.
Trained and prepared school staff, I understand. Churches, almost expected. But bars? No. Alcohol and firearms are never a good combination.
Why are churches specified like it's some sort of special venue?
Maybe because its a special venue?
Arizona seems to be doing fine with guns being allowed in bars. :v:
Oh this a bad thing is it? Well prepare to be destroyed with logic: 1. Schools; Guns in schools, how terrible! Except for the fact you mentioned "certain staff members" are the only ones allowed to have them. By "staff members" I assume you mean administrators or teachers, and if someone has a problem with those people having guns they need to pull their head out of their arse and google the success the zero tolerance policies have been in our schools. Teachers and administrators never abuse power, never. 2. Bars; I'm certain I've never heard of a single case in which someone under the influence of alcohol did anything remotely dangerous with a gun. 3. Church; Do I really have to explain this one? Going to church is American, guns are American. Checkmate. Besides, I get bored to tears in church, it's about time something came along to bring some excitement.
i dont know how to feel about this. Especially the airport and government exceptions, in that anyone who has a CC license can go inside with one before getting patted down.
i dont know how to feel about this. Nobody would know if someone had a gun in the places they're now allowing guns anyway, because it's all before the metal detectors.
this is cute and all but remember what kind of country needs to deliberate allowing people like teachers bring firearms Somalia maybe
i dont agree with allowing guns inside airports before security think about how packed airports are right when you walk in and you go to check your baggage and get tickets.
Yes, because ALL of those school shootings that were prevented by "gun free zones".. oh wait.. they haven't stopped one.. well then..
Honestly I can't say your wrong, they obviously don't stop school shootings. However, have you been in a public school recently? Can you honestly say giving guns to people who freak out over a child eating a pop tart into a gun-like shape, is a good idea? I think something needs to be done, and I'm not educated enough to know specifically what, but I do know giving teachers guns is a nightmare waiting to happen.
Yes, because ALL of those school shootings that were prevented by "gun free zones".. oh wait.. they haven't stopped one.. well then..
No but seriously allowing teachers firearms in inner city schools is a powder keg waiting to go off. This law is really only relevant and safe in some schools so the whole "up to the school" thing is a very good call. Guns can make a bad situation worse as easily as they could make a bad situation better.
Are you attention whoring, or are you really this dumb?
If what I recall from an earlier thread is correct, it's a bit of both.
Ban open carry in general. Open carry is stupid and honestly only paints you as a target to someone who would be shooting other people. Also we should ban all forms of weapons in bars, drugs and weapons are NOT a good combination. Georgia, you're a really stupid state.
yea no, open carry is there to protect hunters and the like so they don't have to worry about any sort of penalties when they have their rifle slung over their shoulder.
Are you attention whoring, or are you really this dumb?
If I have to choose, I suppose attention whoring. I was going to say, "It's a joke, learn to laugh" but you'd just say, "have you tried being funny?" and the problem isn't that you don't find funny what I think is funny. The problem is you lack any kind of reading comprehension. I've actually considered dumbing down my posts for people like you (not that my posts need to be dumbed down anymore than they already are) but I really don't feel replacing my above post with something like,
Give guns to teachers? lol sounds like a great idea v:v:v
will actually improve the quality of my posts.
Why bars? Who would shoot up a bar?
Why bars? Who would shoot up a bar?
I can agree with some of the people here that they probably shouldn't be allowed in bars, but I think this law is designed mainly to make legal what everyone was already doing. Since it's concealed, they would only know if you had it out. It really doesn't change much of anything at all tbh.
yea no, open carry is there to protect hunters and the like so they don't have to worry about any sort of penalties when they have their rifle slung over their shoulder.
Uhh, sorry but you don't have to carry your hunting rifle into every store, bar, school and church along the way to the hunting grounds. Plus by open carry, we all know they mean some jacktard with a rifle or handgun strapped to his hip/back in plain sight for "self defense." Don't try to pull the "hunter descrimination" card, no one is going to take your precious hunting rifles away because you carried it to your vehicle or were carrying it while hunting, that's fucking stupid. Personally I transport my guns in a case with no rounds loaded in the mag (for rifles like my Mosin-Nagant) or no mag in the gun. Don't see why that's so hard to do either. [editline]23rd April 2014[/editline]
Why bars? Who would shoot up a bar?
I don't know who would shoot up a bar but, have you ever seen someone get angry when drunk, someone who is an angry drunk, or someone who suffered childhood abuse by an alcoholic parent? They call them bar fights for a reason mate.
I've heard rumors at my school that the principal has kept a .32 or .44 in his desk for quite some time.
Haha yeah but you hear these rumours all the time in school. I remember it'd go around all the time that the Art teacher had a shotgun in the boot of her car. Oh and there's a swimming pool on the top of A-block.
Just a state making legal what most people agree with, as another example passing a redlight after a reasonable amount of time has passed(say the trigger isn't being tripped in auto lights)
Where did I say that? I was implying that they don't have to worry about facing any sort of penalty when they're either hunting, walking to and from their home or vehicle, or carrying their firearm into a store for whatever reason. Trust me bud, I'm not a fud who only cares about hunting. And just like you, when I travel with my firearms, I keep my handguns cased with mags in a separate container, my rifles cased with the mags and bolts out, and my bolt guns have the bolts out if the mags are non-detachable. Open carry isn't designed to protect people who want to carry a handgun on their hip into walmart. People take advantage of laws like that just like any other prick would take advantage of a law.
I've heard rumors at my school that the principal has kept a .32 or .44 in his desk for quite some time.
I'd like to add that he's a hunter, whose brought fox, bear, and dear pelts in from when he hunted in Alaska to show us when he was still a teacher, even showed me his .500 S&W, needless to say I'm sure he packing heat.
