Government warns striking teachers - "All respect will be lost"

Education Secretary Micheal Gove has warned that if teachers take part in Thursday's strikes, they risk losing all respect for their profession.
Over 750,000 public sector workers will be striking on Thursday over pensions, which will cause thousands of schools to close for the day.
Mr Gove urged them to "stick to the talks and let's not have the sort of militancy that will disturb family life for hundreds of thousands of people across the country - and will mark a retrograde step for the profession"
He added: "You don't see hospital consultants going on strike and I don't believe that teachers and head teachers should. It's within their rights - it's a civil right - but I think it's wrong for the reputation of the profession."
Mr Gove said legislation on strike laws had to be kept "under review" - as the public would demand change "whether in the law or whatever in order to make sure we do not have militancy that disrupts family life".
He said there were "different options" for dealing with it but he did not want to "ratchet up the rhetoric" and get into a "pitched battle" with unions at a time he was in negotiations with them.
The Independent on Sunday reported that Mr Gove had written to schools, to ask them to get parents to help keep schools open during the strike.
He added that the government wanted to do "everything possible to ensure that schools stay open" - but he did not know how many would have to shut on Thursday.

I think they're being irresponsible by striking at this time. Most people are in the middle of exams. I have one on Monday. Maybe it'll have more effect by striking at this time, but it's going to harm people who aren't responsible more than it harms those who make the decisions.
Wow, that Gove guy seems really diplomatic! Telling people that think they are underpaid that they will also lose their respect (from whom?) if they go on strike is just contra-productive.
hi you aren't allowed to strike it's disrespectful, brb just gonna' go buy a house with my expenses.
It's funny because medical workers have all ok with their pay and pensions.
You people are morons, they can strike if they want, but not in the fucking middle of peoples final exams, that's only harming the children who probably have no clue its even going to happen.

I'm in the middle of my exams and I give all power to the teachers.
Yeah striking during the middle of exams would be awful, but the teachers are probably also using the possibility of a strike during exams as political leverage. No one wants that, so the teachers are more likely to get what they want if they threaten a strike then.

in the middle of exams you have to be an asshole to do so.
Middle of exams is the perfect time to strike(lol pun).
Still have more respect than politicians do though
In our school, people who have exams on the day have to come in - those who don't, are not forced to - therefore meaning that it doesn't affect us; just gives us another day of revision.
every quote from that guy makes me want to punch him in the mouth.
maybe its the lack of any substance whatsoever or the blatant hypocracy or both, but really.

but yeah, striking during exams is a dick move yet an effective threat.

The last exam across all exam boards is tomorrow. They're striking after tomorrow. Thus their strikes wont effect exams.
If anything they've chosen the perfect time to do it, after the exams and while everyone's pretty much just waiting for the summer holidays to start.
Also, thanks to tuition fees being raised, pretty much every single student in the country hates the conservatives.
and now, thanks to the public sector being squeezed, pretty much every person about to get a pension hates the conservatives.
All the government needs to do now is somehow piss off those aged between 25 and 45 and private sector workers over the age of 50, and they'll have successfully managed to get the entire country to hate the government. Because fuck democracy.
Except this time they have some lying Libdem friends to help them.
My philosophy teacher isn't gonna come in to college on Thursday. He's gonna sit around watching Jeremy Kyle.
Fuck the man.
During exams, students are on study leave anyway aren't they? So teachers striking wouldn't affect them negatively, as the students with exams won't be attending lessons.
Boo Fucking Hoo.
One day of school, the world must end if we miss it.
What a cunt.
-snip-
Michael Gove visited my school recently.
He's a dick.

My dad was forced into early retirement due to the conservatives so they could give him a smaller pension back in April. :(
Sad that all the major british political Partys are run by corrupt fucks only in it for their own wallet
Just goes to show you how desperate the government are if they're trying to turn public opinion against them by waggling a finger and going "No! Bad people! Bad!"
It's incredibly dumb. Striking is the only way working people have to protest with any effect. Fuck this guy.

And yet teachers in the UK are paid MUCH higher than those in the United States, and in the US teachers are treated (at least in Arizona) like the mud on people's boots.
Right now is the time the rich and powerful are trying to break unions, once and for all. They know that a lot of people are hurting right now, a lot are unemployed or under employed working low wage jobs. They are hoping that these people who are struggling will have no sympathy for union workers because of feelings like 'at least they have a job' and 'at least they have benefits'.
I hope people aren't that stupid. I hope they realize that once unions are broken apart, all workers are screwed.

The expenses in both countries are completely different though. You can't just do a conversion of a British teacher's salary and decide that they get a better deal. Teachers are also treat like shit here, which is why I respect anyone that can handle being a teacher as I know I couldn't.

They said a few weeks ago when they were first talking about striking that they would make sure that they did not interfere with any exams.
I reckon every single teacher in America should do this until you guys fix your fucking school system.
Growing retards only helps the retards currently in power.
More government brainwashing...
Hopefully my school won't close.
