I'm sure in GIMP you make brushes face in the direction the brush is moved, but I can't figure out how to do this

I don't think it supports stroke directionality, at least, not in 2.6. I'll compile a copy of 2.7.3 and get back to you, but I don't think there's hope.

Yes it does. I remember using it, and it is a property of the brush used. As in, you need to go into the brushes dialogue and edit the brush to point in the direction it is moved. It's in the same property panel that defines how the sparkles brush randomly disperses.
