The president of ultra-liberal Oberlin College is standing by the professor who has been posting a slew of anti-Semitic rants and bizarre 9/11 conspiracy theories on social media. The prestigious Ohio college — alma mater of Lena Dunham — released a letter from president Marvin Krislov defending associate professor Joy Karega’s freedom of speech, The Chronicle-Telegram reported Wednesday. “I believe, as the American Association of University Professors says, that academic freedom is ‘the indispensable quality of institutions of higher education’ because it encourages free inquiry, promotes the expansion of knowledge, and creates an environment in which learning and research can flourish,” Krislov writes. “Cultivating academic freedom can be difficult and at times painful for any college community. The principles of academic freedom and freedom of speech are not just principles to which we turn to face these challenges, but also the very practices that ensure we can develop meaningful responses to prejudice,” he added.
Source
Haha, the jews did not fire the professor in order to divert any suspicion and to perpetuate the illusion of free speech. Clever motherfuckers.

She forgot to mention that jet fuel can't melt steel beams :conspiratard:
I love how Oberlin students cry over food not being culturally authentic but don't protest actual racism because the minority being attacked has white skin
Great what did those dope smokers do now? Oh it's a crazy right wing conspiracy theorist passing themselves off as a left wing teacher...
Great what did those dope smokers do now? Oh it's a crazy right wing conspiracy theorist passing themselves off as a left wing teacher...
You do realize that the left wing also has these conspiracies
Great what did those dope smokers do now? You'd be surprised how many left wing people are against Israel.
Look, if governments have trouble putting up semi-functional websites, how would Israel be able to set up a huge international event on the scale of 9/11
Oh it's a crazy right wing conspiracy theorist passing themselves off as a left wing teacher...
Most of the truly rabid anti-semites I've met in my life were all super lefty types. They couch a lot of their hate in anti-Israel rhetoric. The /pol/ stereotype definitely exists too but I've never met one in the wild.
I love how Oberlin students cry over food not being culturally authentic but don't protest actual racism because the minority being attacked has white skin
Best to not censor offensive speech, even if its against Jews and even if its stuff thats just factually wrong.
Best to not censor offensive speech, even if its against Jews and even if its stuff thats just factually wrong.
Depends on the intent. If something is presented as an opinion then let them talk. If something is presented as a fact with the intention to purposefully mislead or spread hate then I say shut em up.
Great what did those dope smokers do now? Oxford University Labour Club's chairman resigned from his post due to anti-Semitism in the club, which came to a head when they voted to support Israeli Apartheid Week. See here for more details.

“Given that you are a Jewish student and very active in the Jewish community,” Fabienne Roth, a member of the Undergraduate Students Association Council, began, looking at Ms. Beyda at the other end of the room, “how do you see yourself being able to maintain an unbiased view?” For the next 40 minutes, after Ms. Beyda was dispatched from the room, the council tangled in a debate about whether her faith and affiliation with Jewish organizations, including her sorority and Hillel, a popular student group, meant she would be biased in dealing with sensitive governance questions that come before the board, which is the campus equivalent of the Supreme Court. The left is more dangerous for Jews than the right at this point in time. They hide anti-Semitic points of view behind criticism for Israel. Israel can and should be criticized but people go overboard and equate Jews with Israel.
Great what did those dope smokers do now? Oh it's a crazy right wing conspiracy theorist passing themselves off as a left wing teacher...
Left wingers do nothing wrong amirite?
:v:
Both elements of the left and right have them as a holy cow that can't be desecrated, which sometimes includes criticism of the Israeli State.
You need to 100% melt steel beams to affect structural integrity. some people... :suicide:
people say "melt" because there was actually melted steel found on site which is easily explained by all the wood, paper, plastic and other material burning in an enclosed area creating an atmosphere much like a furnace, areas of fire hot enough to actually melt steel.
Isn't this rather a matter of wrong opinion than hate speech? It's an academy, so wouldn't it be more approperiate to debate these things rather than toss the speaker out
Isn't this rather a matter of wrong opinion than hate speech? It's an academy, so wouldn't it be more approperiate to debate these things rather than toss the speaker out
She said that Jews did 9/11. That's not a wrong opinion, that's blatant denial of fact for anti-semitic reasons.
Karega, who has worked at Oberlin only since last year, wrote on numerous Facebook posts that she believes Israel was the mastermind behind numerous terrorist attacks around the world including 9/11 and the Charlie Hebdo slaughter in Paris. Last January, she posted a graphic of an ISIS militant pulling off a mask of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s face with the text, “France wants to Free Palestine? Time for a false flag…” “This ain’t even hard. They unleashed Mossad on France and it’s clear why,” Karega wrote in a now-private post, referencing Israel’s intelligence agency. In another post, she claimed that ISIS was created by the CIA and Mossad so that “Israeli and Zionist Jews” could carry out the 9/11 terror attacks.
She didn't accuse Israel of doing this, she accused Jews of doing it. There is no reason why any Jews would want to do 9/11, the Charlie Hebdo attacks (which killed several Jewish members of that magazine. Later on, several other Jews died during the attack on the kosher supermart), or the recent Paris attacks (which attacked the Bataclan, a Zionist theater). The professor is blaming Jews for every major terrorist attack in the 21st century. If you blamed all muslims for every major terror attack in the 21st century, you would be called racist even though extremist Muslims committed those attacks. Jews have nothing to do with the attacks other than dying in them.
Criticising the israeli state and zionist jews isn't really explicit anti-semitism due to zionism being a rather specific movement/ideology rather than the religion or ethnicity at large. edit: even if legit anti-semitists using anti-Israel or anti-zionist arguments to supplement or legitimize racist ones is problematic this is kind of treading the line and it might be in the interest of human rights rather than against them to allow this due to the fact that israel(i government and affiliated religious and political interest groups) does actively try to suppress or subvert rhetoric against it.
on social media.
Good. She exercised her freedom of speech to say something fucking stupid on her own terms during her free time and wasn't persecuted. This is good.

The only people who believe them are those that want there to be an conspiracy. [editline]3rd March 2016[/editline]
Good. That's why Jews are leaving France in record numbers.

It's meant to be deployed just before Israel's destruction. As the name implies, the Samson Option is effectively "if we die, we'll take you all with us".
Good. She exercised her freedom of speech to say something fucking stupid on her own terms during her free time and wasn't persecuted. This is good.
Teachers in many states have to go through a digital citizenship course which explicitly states that your social media behavior can and will affect your job. Every single person who wants to become a teacher in the US has to encounter this rule or training in some way, shape, or form. Social media is no longer entirely separate because parents and students all have access to this teacher's profile. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you're absolved of consequences, especially when you're an educator.
