The newspaper The Australian reports that Malcolm suffered a stroke last year, as the Sydney Morning Herald proclaims that the guitarist is currently suffering from serious dementia. While both a stroke and dementia have been rumored in past stories, these new articles give more credence to those earlier reports.
Both newspapers report that Malcolm is currently in full-time care at a nursing home facility called the Lulworth House in Elizabeth Bay in suburban Sydney, Australia. A source close to the band tells the Sydney Morning Herald, “If you were in the room with [Malcolm] and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory.”
Meanwhile, in an article in The Australian newspaper [via the AAP newswire], AC/DC’s former manager Michael Browning says, “I have friends that are still involved and they keep me posted so I have known for a little while. I think [Young's illness] came on very suddenly,” adding, “It’s shocking, it’s terrible. Sadly for AC/DC they’re losing their creator, their mentor — he’s the genius behind the band.”
This sucks so bad.
Damn it... Yeah heared about this yesterday but I wasn't sure if it was true. I guess I know for sure now.

this has got to be one of my worst fears
Sad to see one of the big names in music history end up like this, even as someone who has never really liked AC/DC.
Man, that sucks. I love AC/DC, their music, and I can't believe Malcom won't be the same person anymore.

Of It happening to you? Nothing to worry about like, If It did happen I doubt you'd even realise you had It.

Feels good to be young enough to say that I got at least a few if not several decades before I get memory loss to this degree

Well, quite the irony.
I've made a post in a thread yesterday, and today I took a look, but couldn't remember at all I posted it.

Well you know there are three big advantages to having short term memory loss. You always get to see new people, you don't remember anything bad, and you always get to see new people.
To be fair, they had a good run. Sure it sucks that one of hard rocks biggest names is going to a nursery home and dementia is a terrible fate for anyone and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But at least he lived a fulfilling life of doing what he was passionate about and forever leaving his mark in music history. The way AC/DC influenced the genre is insane, I think those guys can look back and feel good about their lives. And maybe he's been pushing himself too far. Noone can pull Lemmy Kilmister or the Stones level of detication to music off without having their minds or bodies giving in at some point.
It's tragic, yeah, but who needs new memories after a life of so much adventure.
Man, I'd rather get struck by thunder.
Man, I'd rather get struck by thunder.
How do you get struck by thunder?
I can't help imagining the old guy in nursing homes that always brags about how he fought in so many battles, yet everyone else thinks he's crazy.

I've been a huge fan of AC/DC my entire life. I'm still collecting all of their albums but I only started last year. Before that my dad had all their albums. But I love these guys so much I used them in several school projects years ago and was able to convince a few people who previously hated them to appreciate them a bit more.
They're real showmen, they know how to get a crowd going and how to keep them going. They always have. And I feel terrible for Malcolm to have to go through this. I guess this explains why he won't be in their next album at all. It's a shame really. They're all really great people.

It would be hard legislate (informed consent, and all that jazz), but if I were to be in the same position, I'd rather be dead.

If I was in the same position, I'd want to be used for medical testing. Because if I'm oblivious, may as well use me to benefit the human race.

I like how this joke also works as a statement about AC/DC's career in that they have only really written one song in 40 years and just played it over and over very nice

Well it worked out pretty nice for them so yeah

oh my
This sucks. My grandfather has Alzheimer's, it's really difficult watching the person you once knew slowly disappear.
Sucks as a fan of AC/DC too. AC/DC got me into hard rock, I have their flag on my wall and they were the reason I bought an electric guitar years ago. Always wanted to go see them live, but they come to Finland so rarely, and I never have the time or the money to go.

Well, damn, it's really sad to see someone doomed to eventually become a shell of their former selt. Fuck, this just made knowing that my oldest grandmother (in her 80s) is now in a nursing home with alzheimers that much harder to cope with. Before reading this, I just accepted that considering her age, her time is not that far off, but none the less made the fact that she is basically now a shell of her former self that much harder to cope with. At least I can know that in her death she will be reunited with her husband who served in vietnam. I feel really bad that it took someone famous being diagnosed with dementia to have this thought come across my head.
EDIT: I forgot to mention this earlier, but no, her husband did not die in Vietnam, he died from complications of stroke about a decade ago, around the end of his life, he was frequently hospitalized with similar issues until his body eventually broke down from it.

How humble of you.. But yeah, I agree.
The thing that I find really sad about dementia is that the person won't even remember who he or she really is anymore. You can tell him all kinda great about him, and he's like "Whoa, really? that's incredible" but moments later it's gone. It's so sad.
Also watch 'The Sopranos' people, if you haven't already. On top of being a superior television series, it also has a really good portrayal of dementia. One of those series that makes you more human, not less.

One of the symptoms, I believe, is shaking at the knees.
