I liked how the teachers in the back are at first smiling at her but then when she starts the speech they all start looking away.

She's right though.
she seems qualified to say this
The video has even more value to it considering she was #1 as far as grades are concerned, and she's speaking about how getting the best grades doesn't really mean anything.
Holy shit.
This is true on all educational systems on (that i know of) all countries
I hope more people will be open to this truth
What she said about critical thinking was interesting.
I can see where she is coming from, and while I think creativity is the key to progression, and that money being what people aim for can hold this back, I also strongly prefer the economic right to the left.
Pretty interesting comments on the education system, unfortunately such a large change is extremely difficult to get in motion (stopping the education system from revolving around qualifications is a change of serious magnitude)
I agree with everything she said.
She wants public schooling to be something it was never meant to be for. In school it's not your place to be intelligent, sure you can be, but that isn't the only thing you need for success. The only obligation you have in school is to be a student. You soak up experience, information, technique, whatever. You can go think critically wherever you want, you can't become an educated member of the public through structured learning wherever you want.

Also I kind of feel like you guys agree with her just because you don't like school.

It's all about learning mate, i love to learn about EVERYTHING, so yes, i don't like school, but i still 'soak up information' which is always a good thing, however the current industrial school model whether you like it or not will not last, in fact it's heading the way the economy is heading in a few decades: THE SHITHOLE
Which is why I am iffy about going to finish college to pursue an art oriented career.
[editline]08:39PM[/editline]
too bad her words will be heard by deaf ears
as soon as i get back to school, i'm emailing this to all of my teachers(save one, my computer animation teacher), with the sentence "When you lose my attention, this is why."
word, man, word
[editline]09:19PM[/editline]
holy fuck this is great
[editline]09:20PM[/editline]
holy shit break down the walls of corruption to let a garden flourish
goddamn
..Holy shit.
And that is a smart people for ya folks.
Oh god my smartness
As true as this all is and as much as I agree, I can see a lot of students using this as an excuse to not put any effort into school, learning or otherwise. However, I hope this movement takes off; the only way it's going to do so, however, is from the inside, and slowly. The whole backbone of the system is flawed, though, so it will be very difficult. She is wrong on one account: School's job wasn't designed to make people labor workers, it was designed to keep children busy and off the job market. With the way the government works, and politics, it's all about appearance, so the purpose of school is to make it look like children are learning. Thus the emphasis on tests and grading, and not on learning and inspiring (which must be done on the lowest level, by the teachers).
I only liked high school because I could choose my own areas of interest, literally all of my classes revolved around computers / technology. (So I didn't mind learning and doing the tests)
When I got nominated for valedictorian, I began working on a speech similar to this.
I ended up losing by one vote.
To the guy I voted for.
Every time i say anything like this to any teacher in my school, they call me crazy and tell me to stop spreading "lies".
Idiots.
Holy shit. How true.
This is pretty much common sense.

HOLY FUCK YOU WILL SURE TELL THEM THEY WON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HIT THEM!
Yeah it sounds like a lot of these people are just agreeing with this girl cause they don't like going to school
Or perhaps it is that they don't like going to school because she is right?

No, I love going to school - to learn. The problem is that most of the time I'm not actually learning, I'm just conforming to the idiotic curriculum.
Pretty well spoken, and she's right. I've only had one teacher so far, whom truly inspired me, to start learning things.
wait, this is a high school valedictorian. the way you were all making her sound like a genius i assumed it was at least a university. i'm sorry but high school valedictorian isn't a big accomplishment and it certainly doesn't qualify you to say that the entire school system is flawed

Meh. yeah.
They don't want to hear anything about change.
