Microsofts Profit Rises 19% Thannks to Software Sales

[quote]Despite a brutal slump in global sales of personal computers, Microsoft said on Thursday that its third-quarter profit rose 19 percent, driven by rising sales from its Windows and Office software products.
The company, based in Redmond, Wash., also disclosed that Peter Klein, its chief financial officer, will leave the company this year after nearly four years of running its finance department. Mr. Klein’s departure was unexpected, and Microsoft said it would name a new C.F.O. from its finance team within the next several weeks.
Microsoft is closely identified with the PC business, which is struggling as new types of electronics products, most notably smartphones and tablets, nibble away at sales. The research firm IDC recently reported that global PC shipments fell almost 14 percent during the first three months of the year, the industry’s worst performance in almost two decades.
During its fiscal third quarter, which ended March 31, Microsoft said revenue from its Windows division rose 23 percent to $5.7 billion from $4.63 billion a year earlier

[quote]The company said it was satisfied enough with the performance of Windows, which boosted profit 16% in the wake of Windows 8's launch. Yet it seemed more excited about the performance of its other services, including Office and Xbox.
Microsoft said that its Office 365 cloud-based productivity suite was on pace to generate a billion dollars this year in revenue. The company also expressed satisfaction with the 46% growth of Xbox Live. Microsoft got a big boost from the Xbox and Kinect, sales of which grew a surprising 56% over last year.
Microsoft is so pleased, in fact, that Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein pledged the company would stay the course on its recent strategy shift, even though that includes soft-selling tablets like the Microsoft Surface and the the Windows Phone mobile platform.
"Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in long-term growth opportunities to drive our devices and services strategy forward and deliver ongoing value to shareholders," Klein said in the company press release.

That's probably because Windows 8 was really cheap. I even bought a copy just because it was so cheap.
Now they've bumped it back up to full price, so I can't imagine it'll keep selling as well.
-wrong thread sorry-
I bet they make a bunch off of patent trolling as well considering how many android devices are sold

Yeah, I bought it just because it was still $40 and I was still on vista. I didn't even want windows 8, I was satisfied with Vista. I bought it more because it was too good of a deal to pass up
Duh, because they massively hiked the Windows 8 price tag, and that hike was 100% profit for Microsoft. Plus, Microsoft is hawking their own software and collecting a tithe from everyone on the Windows RT store, which is the sole source of software for the RT platform.
They're converting entirely to Apple business practices and working their way towards Apple profit.
Also, the new edition of Office comes only in limited license formats. You need to renew it after a year and it can only be installed on a couple of computers at a time. Homes with more than two or three computers get buttfucked by that, and the average computer user won't look into alternatives.

The home editions of the subscription service let you install it on somewhere between 3 to 5 systems, I forget how many exactly, and the cost of a subscription for a couple years is about as much as it would cost to buy the software permanently. Also, you can buy the actual software without subscribing but like I said its the cost of a few years of subscription, which is about as much as an Office suite usually is.

Windows 8 is the same price as XP, Vista, and 7 (I don't know about before XP), so it isn't necessarily a "hike".
isn't win8 cheaper than the previous editions? I know it's cheaper than vista, though vista did cost twice as much in the UK as in the US because of absolute fuckery

stop talking out of your arse, you can buy a subscription service but the old office business model remains intact

Yeah sure, the "price hike" that brought windows 8 up to the price of, ehh, windows 7 is the sole reason why Microsoft made more money on selling windows licenses than last year - they didn't actually sell more licenses, they just made the profit appear out of the thin air.
I mean you can not like windows 8, and then there's being fucking delusional. Anyway, it sounds like Xbox and the cloud business contributed mostly to the profit increase.
