Don't let the thumbnail fool you.
i do agree that it'd be nice for games to have local splitscreen more than they do now but otherwise i can't really agree much with the video
especially since it keeps talking about online gaming being about playing with strangers, completely ignoring the fact that you can still play with your friends online and interact just like you would while playing on a couch with them
plus playing online with friends instead of locally is a lot handier and easier to arrange since you don't have to be in the same place as them, so i can play with friends from around the world anytime
i'd like more games to have local splitscreen modes but gaming sure as hell hasn't evolved to become "further apart than ever", other than physically
Rage face thumbnail? Really?
I think it's easy to say "just add splitscreen regardless of performance", but given how closed console platforms are, you're working with a very fine tolerance in terms of specification and performance for getting your games running on them in the first place. Given how complex games are now, I can see the incentive for developers not to add splitscreen when you're having to double the processing done inside the game-loop. To make it out that it's some ploy to force people to buy online subscriptions sounds incredibly cynical.

TBH I think aesthetics are more important then graphics these days anyway.
What's gonna make a game sell better Glorious brown graphics or slightly downgraded graphics which is compensated for by picking an aesthetic style that doesn't suffer due to the downgraded graphics that allows you to have an absolute blast with your friends?
Many games on consoles can't even maintain 60 fps in SP. With the different style choice you might be able to maintain 60 fps in SP/MP and 30 FPS in split screen.
Issue with local split-screen in my eyes currently is that developers focus on developing all sorts of different part of a game, and adding a split-screen option would require some effort from them, and I'm pretty sure most of the time publisher just says "nah m8" just like in Halo 5. But in Halo 5's case it might also be the bottleneck of the console and optimisation of the game itself, who knows. Traveller's Tales LEGO games are my get-go when someone asks about local split-screen co-op.
There's also another thing, playing over Internet is now much easier and more accessible than ever before, and due to that it's more benefitial to devs to make client-server multiplayer/co-op than local because it will bump the playerbase by metric ton, but then going back to my own example, games like TT Games' LEGO games exist which don't have online co-op and they pretty much require you to play locally.
iirc Halo 5 didn't have splitscreen because they tied the physics to the framerate and cutting it down to 30fps for splitscreen would mess with everything, and they wanted the overall experience to be in 60fps.
Love playing some Mario Kart of Black Ops zombies for this reason. Increased rendering requirements means its pretty difficult now, but there are workarounds if the time is taken.
Dragon's Crown is awesome for co-op. I really need to play more of that. Wish there was a PC port of that game.
All I have to say to this video is. Go get a fucking Wii U. Nintendo seems to be the only one of the big 3 that acknowledge couch multiplayer is still a thing.
That's not to say online multiplayer doesn't have its perks, it absolutely does. But Nintendo seems to be the ONLY one still actively supporting couch multiplayer.

so they made one fucking awful decision and decided to make another bad decision to go along with it
Just last night, buddy and I played GTA Online in the same room. Basically good old LAN over online. Good times.
I miss split screen gaming though. Every now and again I still load up Halo and Quake 2 (Xbox 360 port included in Quake 4) on splitscreen.
Best times I've had with gaming recently has been local gaming with friends, Smash, Rayman Origins, Duckgame, hell even digitized tabletop-esque games like Fibbage and Quiplash. Sure I've had a lot of fun hopping into a lobby online, and sure gaming has come so far as a narrative device, but nothing beats the godly combination of good games, good friends and pizza (goodness optional) in my books.

Some people don't really know better to be honest.
And I don't mean that in a 'you're stupid' kind of way, I mean a lot of people don't know about the overall attitude to them and just see people post them everywhere for reactions.
removing splitscreen is just an excuse for forcing people to buy more consoles
it's one of the greatest pleasures to sit there in a room with your friends without everyone bringing their own setups or even owning their own setups and all playing together on one screen
splitscreen gaming closes the gap between the low and high income and the casual and non casual players
halo 5 one of the greatest offenders, i know many people who returned it, probably the best way they could sell for the next game is "WE'VE BROUGHT SPLITSCREEN BACK!"

I found it so frustrating when they said "well we can't add splitscreen because if we did we'd have to decrease the framerate". Yes 343i, that's been standard practice with splitscreen for literally the entirety of its existence. Plus, you're now turning console gamers off higher framerates by saying you can either have 60fps or splitscreen, not 60fps normally but 30fps (or lower) with splitscreen.
I miss the days of mario party and mario kart. I lost so many friends. This is why i like nintendo most of the time. they seem to get the idea that local multiplayer games are really fun. I mean i have friends on the web that play smash with me everyday. but sometimes the lag just kills the game for us. I loved playing halo 2 with my family. there needs to be a revival of co-op games.

Pretty much. And I'm sure MS had a hand in it to sell more Xbones.
But to be perfectly honest the game would have looked like ass in splitscreen. The game isn't exactly good looking and relies on a dynamic resolution to stay 60fps.

I care more about how fun a game is rather than how good it looks, and i'm pretty sure people playing couch co-op have the same mindset seeing as co-op can often make terrible games actually amusing / fun when you've got a friend along for the ride to tear it down.
Just look at Resident Evil 5 and 6.

But they won't. Looking at the comments in that video, it seems that the only thing the average gamer knows about Nintendo these days are rumors and assumptions their friends told them. "Wii/Wii U don't have shooters! The GamePad can't use the same kind of controls the other systems have! Only Nintendo tries to sell the same game to you twice by remastering games from last gen!"
AAARGH. The system is already doing things people want the other two systems to do, and everyone just thinks it's a worse iPhone or something!

That's what (most) people want but publishers, and some devs, believe it's all about graphics. That said though Halo 5's gameplay is excellent. They just chose framerate over features.

They didn't choose framerate over anything: it's common practice to have a game run at a lower fps while in splitscreen and a higher fps while not in splitscreen.
Seeing as they wanted the overall experience to be 60fps and couldn't achieve that in splitscreen they pretty much did choose framerate over splitscreen.
I'll be honest, most of the time I prefer to play with my friends over online, with Smash Bros being the exception.
I'll probably never get to experience games with local multiplayer any time soon since most of my friends live in different states, and the ones that are local rather play Magic which is fine since when played casually it's a blast.

This. Basically, most of the games that I play with friends (except for Smash) I would prefer to play over online, or at least on separate machines. When I'm with friends, I tend to play card/board games and shit or stuff like air hockey.
It's not like consoles are the only way to do local coop. Just a month ago my friend was over and we played some Cortex Command locally. Didn't even need a 2nd controller for that.
Just wait until Left 4 Dead 3 comes out.
They are bound to have "Couch Co-op".
But if Valve fucks it up...oh nelly.
