I agree with the above article.
Articles like these are what makes RPS worth the read. Seriously, I had never analyzed the current PC gaming market in the way Alec described it, and I totally see it now. It's a pretty cool analysis.
Oh hey I totally agree with this.

And I thought I was just an idiot for finding the GPU tech race a few years ago disturbing and confusing. Guess someone else noticed, too.

I upgraded my pc to play TES:IV Oblivion, I've stuck with that computer because it could handle Crysis and I don't see any reason to upgrade my computer hardware further besides more hdd.
I bought a new PC 10 days ago. Believe me - that journey of looking for new parts was just pain in the asshole. Is that CPU going to bottleneck GPU or other way around? Is that HDD going to survive for more than half of a year? Is that mob really that good? Should I care about SLI? Why nvidia, maybe radeon this time? Right now that shitty e-shop refuses to send all that stuff, telling me that there is no case, or gpu, or everything. I think that instead of next-get gaming i'll just tell them to fuck off, force to give my money back and play on gts8600 and amd athlon +6400. I don't feel like doing all this shit again only to get a PC that will be decent for 3, max 4 months.
There's a certain charm about PCs that will never diminish for me: The way you have so much control over them, the way you can customize them. I don't think I personally could ever fully move onto console gaming. It's just so... bland.
Very good read.

I wish Newegg or one of the providers of the actual hardware could sit the fuck down and make a naming convention that made sense, and then say something like "Ok, this is what you should buy if you want to play every game for the next few years". I mean, it might seem like what consoles are doing but if nVidia+Intel and AMD+AMD named their products something like C**** and G**** where the C stood for the CPU and the G was GPU, all you would need to do is match the numbers.
Radeon 4800 HD Series and GeForce 8800-9800 GT are still able to run a lot of games, although they are "old" now. [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] Though I used to have shitty GPUs (like Radeon X1200 or GeForce 9500 GT), those which are not meaning for playing a lot of games
Pretty much the same situation as the author, I haven't upgraded from my 4850 and I see no real need to.

I'm on a 9800GTX 1GB. It's not the best, but I see no reason in upgrading it either. :buddy:
My graphics card is now much outdated, but I have no reason to upgrade as all the games coming out are shit. Seriously, PC gaming (or actually, the majority of all gaming) is going backwards graphically, conceptually, and technologically. I'm not going to name any names or point any fingers, but gaming as it stands now is quite pathetic. Several years ago games were coming out that people could not even dream of playing, the graphics were untouchable, the ideas were mind-blowing, and the stories were astonishing. I've not seen such a game for a few years now. [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] I would go as far as to say PC gaming is dead. Compared to what it used to be, anyway.
pc gaming isn't dead, it's just changing is all instead of big graphically intensive, innovative titles being churned out by well-known companies, we're getting low-budget, quirky indie games. whether this is a good thing or bad is up to you (in my opinion, something being indie does not automatically make it good, but they tend to be refreshing at the very least), but it's happening and you need to deal with it [editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
pc gaming isn't dead, it's just changing is all instead of big graphically intensive, innovative titles being churned out by well-known companies, we're getting graphically average, rehashed console ports from well-known comanies and low-budget, quirky games from indie devs. whether this is a good thing or bad is up to you (in my opinion, something being indie does not automatically make it good, but they tend to be refreshing at the very least), but it's happening and you need to deal with it
[editline]29th November 2010[/editline] fuck I keep forgetting there's no edit button here
The furiously complicated naming conventions the graphics card companies used/use is, as far as I’m concerned, unforgivable, as was the sheer range of different boards available at any one time. Numbers, letters, ‘ultras’ and ‘pros’. Once I kept up, doggedly. Now I don’t care enough to try to. Not only did that overblown marketing vampirism make selecting which was the best card at a given pricepoint incredibly hard work for casual upgraders, it meant sub-par boards were put out with names incredibly similar to decent ones. Just a GS or GT at the end could make all the difference, and you could too easily end up buying an absolute lemon by mistake.
This and especially:
I haven’t upgraded my graphics card for going on three years. I don’t expect to have to any time soon, unless I’m planning on picking up a ludicrously big, high-res monitor. I don’t see another Crysis on the horizon*. And I’m glad.
I'm still on a 8800 GT or GS or something. [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] Geforece that is [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] Gforce
I think I'm going to stick with my ATI Radeon HD4870X2 for a couple more years. The most intensive I do on my computer is Virtualizing, when I need to benchmark/burn-in test something in Virtualbox or similar.
I just wish my PC wasn't that loud but the fans are getting old and the 120 GB HDD is like 6 or 7 years old, still from my Dell while the new Seagate Barracuda broke down 2 weeks after the guarantee.
I doubt consoles can go until 2015, they are already outdated massively.
You're doing it wrong then.
Buy 4xx series, next month - 5xx series got announced, 2 months later - 6xx series released I have my gts8600 since it's orginal release and of course I can say it also lasted for long - but holy shit I have enough of playing on 800x600 low details to get 30 fps
8800'ers represent this card owns, an awesome purchase. I got it used for 100USD 4 years ago and it's lasted me the whole time; I'm only just now starting to have issues with it. I like the transition to focus on gameplay and story, both of which are more important than the tech, but the thing is that graphics and technology are both very important to the advancement of games. The PC platform pushes everything forward, with higher demands for physics and graphics, which results in a better overall gaming experience. And saying you don't want a new Crysis is flat out dumb. I want something that's so astoundingly beautiful that it shows the entire market what you can do with the platform, and pushes others to start doing the same.
I doubt consoles can go until 2015, they are already outdated massively.
Yeah they're really gonna start to wear at the seams by then.
To be honest, when my 8800 went belly up, I assumed a GTX 260 would be an improvement. Honestly, I think my old 8800 is outperforming it on certain games.
You need to do your research buddah.
My terrible mobility laptop cardboard runs MW2 at nearly max.
