Frankenweenie is an upcoming 3D black-and-white stop motion-animated film, directed by Tim Burton, and it is a remake of the Burton's 1984 short film of the same name. Like the 1984 version, it is a parody of and a homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley's book of the same name. In the film, a boy named Victor loses his dog and uses the power of science to bring it back to life. The film is scheduled for release on October 5, 2012. It will be the first stop-motion film to be released in IMAX 3D.

Plot:
After the death of his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring him back to life. Victor tries to hide his creation, but Sparky gets out and causes havoc in the town.
I don't know how many of you fine filmgoers here have seen the original live-action short, but if you haven't, here it is

From a first glance, I think this movie has a chance to be the best picture of the year. Why? First, it's Tim Burton doing stop-motion. See Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride for further details. Second, unlike the last dozen Burton films, this film does not star Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter. Casting below:
Charlie Tahan as Victor Frankenstein
Winona Ryder as Elsa van Helsing
Catherine O'Hara as Susan Frankenstein, Victor's Mom / Weird Girl / Gym Teacher
Martin Short as Victor's Dad / Nassor / Mr. Bergermeister
Martin Landau as Mr. Rzykruski
Robert Capron as Bob
Atticus Shaffer as Edgar
James Hiroyuki Liao as Toshiaki
Conchata Ferrell as Bob's Mom
Tom Kenny as Fire Chief / Soldier / Townsfolk
There are several Burton veterans, but for the most part, nobody he's worked with in the last 5-10 years. To put it short, I am beyond thrilled. This is one of those good ol' "A boy and his dog" type of movies, and having a dog definitely makes me want to see this more. Sure, typical Burton score by Danny Elfman, but I enjoy his music so I won't complain at all about it.
The synopsis seems a bit... "meh" :v:
I'm guessing I could still be positively surprised.
At least it isn't a rehashed fairy-tale starring Johnny Depp.
What the hell is Johnny Depp going to do with his life then?
Also looks fairly dark for a kids movies.
Saw the original years ago, I recall it creeping me the hell out... but then again, I was probably like 6 or 7.
This looks pretty great though, it's about time he returned to his roots.

If you minus the Johnny Depp part it pretty much is.
they need to give movie rights to true goth culture icons like jhonen vasquez.
if he made a feature length movie i'd jizz my pants off

a JTHM movie would be great.
that's simply not possible.
either a movie of the original books or a new story, either way it wouldn't work because
A. jhonen has moved on from johnny
B. half of the reason why johnny was so great were these little blurbs that would pop up like a little commentary (ex: arrow pointing to middle aged man in heaven's jeans and a blurb saying "icky baggy jeans") and all those little details and such. it wouldn't make a great transition even if it was animated (and if it wasn't animated it would be nasty crap)
[editline]4th March 2012[/editline]
a jthm movie would just stagnate the whole thing.
johnny could be supporting cast but not a lead at all. his story is over.

lmao no
"the mallgoth king presents: hot topic: the movie (with a soundtrack by mindless self indulgence)"
hot topic isn't goth anymore, it's like scene now.
and a mindless self indulgence soundtrack in a jhonen vasquez movie would kick fucking ass.

lol i can call you shitbird and it isn't flaming.
Isn't this like, the first original film Tim Burton has done in 5+ years? I'm game whatever the concept is.

Oh shit it's a remake of his own film haha
a remake of a live short into an animated stop motion full length feature.
i wouldn't call it a remake, i'd call it an expansion.

Not too bad-looking, but I'm more excited about the three films Henry Selick (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas) is doing for Disney.
coraline was the shit.
