In 2007 Ice Age 2 was the first Blu-ray film to appear on BitTorrent. At the time, the number of people who owned a Blu-ray player was still very low, and the 22GB download was mostly seen as a curiosity.
Now, fast forward three years and Blu-ray has become mainstream. Not only have sales skyrocketed, but also the number of unauthorized downloads on BitTorrent and other file-sharing networks.
Last week’s store release of Avatar’s Blu-ray version has been a breakthrough for the format. In stores it sold millions of copies in just a few days, beating the previous records set by The Dark Knight in 2008. On BitTorrent we see a similar scenario.
With more than 200,000 downloads in the first four days, Avatar has squashed all competition. The download figures are still quite low compared to those of ‘regular’ pirated DVDs – this could be in part due to the larger file size (~10GB) and the fact that Blu-ray market penetration is nowhere near DVD levels yet.
Another interesting observation is that a relatively high percentage of downloads in the first few days came from the UK and Australia. One of the reasons for this could be that these countries had a later release date which means that the pirated Blu-ray was available to them before the retail version hit the local stores.
Again, it seems that a lack of availability is one of the major forces driving BitTorrent users to download films. Availability aside, DRM issues have reportedly prevented people from playing the disc in their Blu-ray player, so this could also have boosted download numbers a little.
Avatar has been an enormous success. Piracy was rampant but it has not hindered a film that has broken nearly all sales records in motion picture history. That must be somewhat reassuring for the film industry.
That doesn't mean its any good.

I enjoyed it, it certainly wasn't bad.
just means that people wouldn't want to pay for an overrated movie
I, personally, don't want to see it at all.
Seems pretty obvious, like modern warfare 2.
Oh hello bandwagon.
yet it's the one that got the most cash in for the producers
another proof that piracy =/= lost sales
So even with record-setting levels of piracy, it's been able to break every sales record known to man and return many times it's cost to the studio.
Hollywood can stop bitching about how piracy is going to destroy their business now.
BTW, $20 for the DVD/Blu-Ray pack is a pretty good deal.
Actually, that film (The 3d version) was pretty badass

that sounds pretty dumb.

Opinions are subjective.
seems pretty marketed to the 9-15 age group imo
"omg 3d with blue people"
Once you get over the "Yes, it's Dances with Wolves in space" fact, it's a pretty enjoyable movie with or without gimmicky 3D. Hell, most good science fiction is little more than retelling of familiar plotlines or societal narratives with aliens and spaceships.
Yes it isn't bad, it's the people who pretend to be those blue things that is bad and pathetic.
It was a good movie, but I think the best way to see it was on an IMAX screen in all it's glory. It just wont be the same sitting watching it at home.
It had a crap plot and some of the main actors were terrible actors but the visuals were awesome. I have it (rented) and will watch it again.

I'm not saying it's the best movie ever, but you can't say something is shit or overrated without watching it first.
Crap plot, horrible characters, and good visuals.
Not getting many points in my book.
I wish I could have my money back. I saw it in 3d, sure it looked great, but I didn't enjoy it the least bit. If I want good visuals I can walk outside.
Not so easy to find a good story just by walking outside tho.
Oh what a surprise

Stop bandwagoning. I thought the exact same thing till my mum came in and left the DVD on my desk when I was bored. It is a pretty decent film, it's just the community is almost as bad as twilight's.
It's like Spore except it isn't interactive.
My theory:
For a dollar a filmmaker makes, he loses $50 to piracy

It's copying, not stealing.
They don't lose money and we get something anyway.

My theory:
"Statistics" on money lost to piracy are based on completely unverifiable data and baseless assumptions.
The best point of this movie:

Motherfucking coffee cup.

Hollywood is making more money now than ever so stfu.

I remember thinking that it must be a damn calm day on Pandora for that thing to be hovering rock-steady enough to be able to stand there and sip coffee from an open cup.
I actually bought it.
