hey all, I've finally bothered to get around to making myself a "portfolio" type thread, hopefully this can be somewhat interesting...

[h2]History / Bio[/h2]
I started to get into photography in early 2010 when I started doing it in school, at first I wanted to change out of the class into something else because I didn't have any friends in my class. I'm so fucking glad I didn't because that class has had a huge impact on my life and if I didn't do it I likely wouldn't have gotten into photography or want to go study design in uni next year.
In that class I learnt all of the basics of aperture / ISO / shutter speed and I found it all very interesting, I think I was the only person in the class to understand most of it, everyone else was a bit... :downs:.
While in that class I took a few photos for the course, and I felt that I was doing pretty good.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5120351312/[/url]
most of the photos that I took weren't [i]too[/i] bad, although at the time I thought they were a hell of a lot better than they were.
Now in November of 2010, after the school year was over, I had 3 months of holidays to look forward to. At this time I simultaneously lost the ability to borrow cameras from my school and was given a film camera from my uncle. It was at this pint that I think my skill level began to exponentially increase. I started to go out a few times a week for the sole purpose of taking photos, and I took a lot of photos.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5243818292/[/url]
At this point in time I was focusing on shape, colour, with the geometry interesting me. Again, these photos were an improvement over what I was doing before, but not what my current style is.
Then I met up with some people that did weekly walks through a flickr group, and I met the guy that's probably had the biggest impact on my photography as a whole, [url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/26142215@N05/]Jeremy[/url] Hall[/url]
[url]http://s.hzy.im/0325.jpg[/url]
[i]Heather, Jeremy & Myself[/i]
Walking around with these guys introduced me to two things, street photography, and the wider world of film. I already had been given a film camera and I was messing around with it, but these guys were really above and beyond what I'd seen before, with Medium Format and self-developed black and white. Walking around on the streets of Perth with Jeremy & Co. Is another phase that has had a huge impact on my style.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5345875943/[/url]
I was still fairly shy / afraid of what people were thinking while I was taking photos, and that's something that is only gained with time.
In January 2011 the next thing that I went on was the Summer Camp for my church youth group, where I took the principles and techniques that I had learnt on the streets and applied it to an 'event-like' situation.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5395655831/[/url]
With these photos I realised that in using film I could get some pretty damn good quality out of equipment that cost next-to-nothing.
In February 2011 I continued street photography, but with school starting up again I had less time to go out, but I still managed to keep up once a week. Over this period I started to get over the inhibitions of taking photos of people and my style started to consolidate up to where it is today. I realised that in the worst case scenario that someone gets pissed at me, in 30 seconds I would have walked on and they would be gone from my life forever.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5528728727/[/url]
In March I did my first shoot with a model (a friend), it felt like a large step out of my normal style, and I did enjoy it, and overall fairly pleased with the results.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5511843256/[/url]
The next step in my walk of photography was I started to develop my own black and white. It is surprisingly easier than what you expect, and cost less than $100 to get all the stuff.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5594972751/[/url]
The next (and final so far) big shift happened in early April when I got this MF beast:
[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5640140024/[/url]
The Images that it took were mindblowing, 25 usable megapixels out of my consumer scanner sure 'aint bad.

[url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhaslehurst/5664813008/[/url]
So yeah, that's pretty much my photography story so far.

Akso, Gonzales, not [i]lady friend[/i], just the most willing friend I've got / the only one I've bothered to ask so far.
I do have a shoot lined up in 2 weeks with anorher friend, hopefully I can increase the "width" of my portfolio.

ok, here's another few, I got back 170 negs from the last month of taking photos, so i think I'll trickle them out a bit.
I had a lot of fun with this shoot, all of them were taken on medium format, but I thought the results would have been a bit better. I think it's because I had only my 65mm lens (35mm FF equiv.) which is brilliant for street, but portraiture not so much.
My 105mm is currently in getting repaired because the leaf shutter is all sticky :( (and I think if I had that I would have been more pleased with my shots). I know that's a bit of a cop out but I have found that when using certain gear different habits are promoted.

feedback? anyone? :(
I'll put up another set in a few minutes.
I'm wondering if I should link to the images and get rid of the image tags for all but the most recent post, this thread is pretty bandwidth raping.

Lookin' snazzy, keep up the good work.
cheers, while you're here Dai, do you think I should do what I'm doing now and snip the images more than 2 posts old, for the same of everyones bandwidth / loading times?
meh, keep 'em up. Bandwidth isn't an issue these days so much as screen real estate, and really if people don't want to see your pictures when they visit the thread then why are they here at all?
that's true, and I have been noticing about 100 views a day (on flickr) of people clicking the links from this thread... I'll keep the ones from here on in in the thread.
Why do you keep on asking these things then doing what you were asking if you should do anyway? :v:
Anyway loving your shots man.
I like to hear other peoples opinions :v:
anyway, uploaded another set, had to get up at 5am to be ready for the sunrise at 7am

I'm just kinda making it up as I go along, adopting styles or ideas that appeal to me at a certain time. Looking at my work each set can be very strongly linked together, but these sets don't have a very strong correlation to any other (of my sets).
