The UK government is to give extra funding for gay rights campaigners in Russia amid growing concerns over the introduction of legislation outlawing the promotion of homosexuality.
In an interview for the BBC, Culture Secretary Maria Miller said it was the "right thing to do".
Additional money will be given to protest groups such as Stonewall.
The move comes just a week before the start of the Winter Olympics in the Russian City of Sochi.
Sounds like they want to cause trouble.

You mean doing the right thing? Someone has to do something about Russia's anti-gay propaganda efforts
Would you like your taxes go to some fags on the other side of the Earth? :v:
Yea
Well I'm a desperate homosexual then <- And this is how things work in Russia.
This is certainly a great idea, isn't it?
No, because homosexual rights campaigners who receive UK funding will be labelled as foreign agents (which they are), but that means something else in Russia.
I don't understand why an ex-communist country would oppose gay rights. I seriously have no clue how that makes any remote amount of logical sense.

This is not how things work in Russia because being gay in Russia sucks, and you're part of the reason why

It's not like the Soviet Union was any less anti-gay
I'd really rather the money was spent on something else.
I'm glad tax money is being spent on the "right thing to do."
Ugh.
yeah stuff human rights

actually...
The Russian Communist Inessa Armand publicly endorsed both feminism and free love, but never directly dealt with LGBT rights. The Russian Communist Party effectively legalized no-fault divorce, abortion and homosexuality, when they abolished all the old Tsarist laws and the initial Soviet criminal code kept these liberal sexual polices in place.
technically when they abolished all the tsarist laws, they did away with the anti-sodomy laws, they just never bothered to replace them, until stalin that is, then it was illegal till the end of the cold war
It sucks to live in Russia to begin with. It's just a political gesture from UK goverment, grow up, seriously.

And how being gay sucks exactly? In the recent years a lot of public figures confessed themselves being gays and it's not like somebody is pressuring them or something.
I suppose there's difficulties but cmon.
hmm i dunno maybe the skinheads that kidnap and torture gay teens, maybe the laws the govt. puts against gays, maybe the way the govt. cracks down on anything remotely pro-gay maybe the way that government officials literally say they want gays to be killed

I can think of quite a few worse places to live than Russia.
Also, I've never said it wasn't a political gesture because it obviously is, but why does it matter? The UK is a NATO country so a lot of their money goes to fighting pointless wars in the Middle East. Giving money to support Russia's LGBT people, even as a political gesture, is better than wars, isn't it?
