The security company criticised for failing to provide enough staff for the London Olympics has made a bid to be part of the Commonwealth Games when they are staged in Glasgow next year.
G4S bosses admitted the company's handling of London 2012 was a "humiliating shambles".
It had to pay £70m in compensation to organising committee Locog, which used about 3,500 soldiers to plug the gaps.
G4S is still like the worlds largest international security company tbh
with 620,000 employees
and 7-8 billion pounds in yearly revenue
Wonderful. Because apparently they think after botching the Olympics people will be more forgiving of the alleged private prison torturers botching a slightly smaller and less important event?
They should be told that those who don't preform can get out. They didn't preform, so no money prizes for what comes after.

security is a larger industry than I thought
in the UK you're lucky to see a guard in a supermarket (though I know the US is big on security guards)
Heh, I used to work for G4S...

I never saw a guard in a supermarket in the US, maybe malls, but never in retail stores outside of malls.

Same here. The pay was barbaric. The roles and areas were idiotic. Provided no training. Provided no areas for advancement, they basically strung you up somewhere, said; "Here ya go, have fun." and plopped you down somewhere.
Just get the army to do it.
Just get the army to do it.
army make terrible security officers / policemen
Just get the army to do it.
yeah because using the military as police has never caused huge numbers of casualties
believe it or not the force you send in to other countries to kill people and the force you use to keep the peace are not the same

When I worked at Walmart, we had a guard there 24/7. Although they normally just stood by the front door.
He was also fat.

They do have "Loss Prevention teams" though. Less security, more tackling shoplifters.

Yeah remember the people that were killed during the olympics when the army was called in to fix G4S's cockup?
I'm lucky if I ever see security for anything anywhere here in the US. Even my school didn't have a security guard up until I was a Sophomore, and even then it was only ONE person.
But that's beside the point, the school system here is a fucking joke anyways. There's security for about jack shit. You'd be lucky to see a guard in a market of any sort, mostly if they have any issues they'll call the police and let them handle you instead. It's not very effective, seeing as the police around here take about 3 and a half hours to get there after you call anyways.

is it common for schools to have guards?
is it common for schools to have guards?
Well, I used to live in the more "questionable" parts of Michigan, specifically Flint and Detroit. Sometimes you'd find onsite guards because those schools were flooded with trouble-making little bastards, and there'd be fights every other week or some stupid kid assaulting another or a teacher of some sort. I've since moved out of those areas but irregardless the most I've ever seen on one campus is a maximum of about four or five, even for schools that are wildly large.
Aren't G4S also involved in a huge lawsuit in South Africa atm over their running of a maximum security prison, where they tortured inmates and such? Strikes me we shouldn't use them at all until they are cleared from that (or prosecuted, in which case never use them again), especially with their shit record at the Olympics.
Found it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24694214
I'd totally get a job where all I had to do was stand around.
Heh, I used to work for G4S...
I think almost everyone worked for G4S at one point. It's fucking huge.
They employ like mad, and it's easy to get the unemployed desperate for money into it.
...Like me. Though I don't work for them anymore because the pay sucked and I'm a full time student now.
G4S employees are now doing Electricity Meter readings for Scottish Power as well.
wtf I live in a nice bit of Scotland

All the schools I went to have security guards with tasers on them, but they're all really friendly since no one gets in fights here. Where I am right now they have like 12 security guards, but they mostly just help students and converse with staff. A student that needs to go to the "clinic" can get driven up there if they're too sick to walk. Once a security guard helped me get my luggage up to the 'gate' because it was one of those huge black wheeled monstrosities.
It's funny considering edgy kids here call them "Gay 4 Sex"
G4S is like the start of those huge private security firms you see in cyberpunk stuff, like Lonestar, or Belltower.
Or they would be if they could do their job properly.

Hey, I used to call em that, do I know you?

Hail, fellow Estonian! I'm Russian from Tallinn, living in Lasnamae, so if you are Estonian, we've never met, most probably.
In all fairness, there will be a let loss to work with in Glasgow compared to London.
Much smaller, and a hell of a lot less people to deal with.
