Games on demand service OnLive is now free and free from now on, according to the company's founder, who brings word that the streaming game service has dropped plans for monthly subscription fees. Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, says today that the previously pricey ($14.95 USD per month) subscription plans have been scrapped, letting anyone and everyone try the platform for free. That means free demos, free spectating, free Brag Clip videos, messaging and friends lists, according to Perlman. Oh, sure, you still have to pay for the games you want to buy, but you probably knew that.
"Although we wish we could have confirmed no monthly fee from the get-go, pioneering a major new video game paradigm is hard," writes Perlman on the OnLive Blog. "We had to first grow to a large base of regular users before we could understand usage patterns and operating costs. Now that we've reached that stage, we can confidently say a monthly fee is not needed..."
The streaming version of OnLive for PCs is now ripe for the demoing. The long-promised MicroConsole TV adapter, for those who would prefer to use the OnLive service with a dedicated piece of hardware, and the OnLive Game Pad Controllers are "in manufacturing now," Perlman says. "Stay tuned for some exciting announcements coming this holiday season."

Good, now it's basically like steam but you don't download the game, only buy it.
Seems awesome.
Not bad. Good thing they did this or else they would have gone to shit
sounds pretty neat
You have got to be shitting me.
There is no reason for me NOT to buy this!
Can't say I'm happy with no user-generated content, but it's still good since you can play games straight-away on the highest settings without paying for upgrades.
I love how you can rent game for 3 days. I hate how it requires good connection.
If only steam had a renting feature.
Too bad the games look like ass and the input lag makes playing the game a big pain.

It already has been, i was in the beta. The technology is just not there yet.

It is.
The only appeal remains with people who don't buy consoles and who might have a crappy laptop or PC they want to put to good use.
The reason they eliminated monthly fees is not because they are good people who want the customer to be happy, but because they aren't getting enough customers via that scheme.
I don't think people have mentioned that they already had monthly plans going PLUS having to pay for access to the game, they must have discovered that this formula is stupid.
Aww, it says my latency is so high I can't even launch the program.
now promise us that we can download our games if onlive goes under
I have it, it has input lag like no other. Unless you are really close there is no way. Video quality is amazingly good though, I'll give them that for sure. If they can remove that lag then it is fine.
Wow, that's uh... wow.
That's a pretty fucking powerful pitch, looking in to this.
Until they reduce the prices it's still not worth it. I don't want to pay full price for a game that I will never actually own. At least with Steam there's some sense of ownership but with this.. Yeah.
Why won't it let me log in
what happens if onlive shuts down, will you be getting physical copies of the games you buy or will you just lose them?
This works great on my netbook.
It looks like it's US only, explains the latency shit :(

:riker:
how well it works depends on your latency

I'd happily play games on my notebook like that.
Great, now fix the bad quality, the input lag and maybe it'll go somewhere.
I can see this working but not for a couple more years when we have better connection and streaming technologies. This is way ahead of it's time.
I thought this said "Onlive dropping monthly feces"
I thought this said "Onlive dropping monthly feces"
Well yeah they kind of are. It's just an unspoken thing we all know about.
I signed up for OnLive in May for that one year free subscription. They didn't activate my account on June 17th and only when I bitched at them, they turned it on (two months later, I might add).
Then I wanted to redeem my 'one free game' as promised in an email, but I couldn't, so I bitched at them again. This time they were like "lol no, that promotion ended a few months ago."
Needless to say, I don't feel like investing money in OnLive.
Onlive was shit in beta and still is shit.
I tried Price of Persia at my brother and them it was bad quality and input lagg and we are bloody swedish on 100mbit.
It would not let me play because it is region locked. I doubt it would work well anyways unless you are within a certain distance to the server

Your speed does not matter its the distance.

Latency/ping in other words
I managed to get the 1st year free thing back when they were offering it, and I found that OnLive is best for checking out games that you're thinking of buying.
It gives you 20 or so minutes in the full game without spending a dime, better than most demos.
Can't say I'm happy with no user-generated content, but it's still good since you can play games straight-away on the highest settings without paying for upgrades.
You don't play on the highest settings, or anywhere close to them.
