• Them's fighting words - Ford sends Chevy cease-and-desist letter over apocalypse ad
When this Chevrolet Super Bowl ad popped up Friday featuring a post-apocalyptic Silverado pickup and a sting at Ford, we noted it was a rare, but not unheard-of public joust between the two brands. Someone at Ford took it a little more personally: Not only did Ford ask General Motors to pull the ad, it pressured NBC to bench it from tonight's Super Bowl. The ad's still on. In a statement released a few minutes ago, Chevrolet says Ford sent a cease and desist letter, demanding the spot showing Silverado owners munching Twinkies and mourning the non-survival of their Ford-owning buddy. A source familiar with the dispute says Ford also called on NBC to pull the $7 million, one-minute air time. Joel Ewanick, GM Global Chief Marketing Officer, says Chevy was standing by its claims that the Silverado is "the most dependable, longest lasting full size pickup on the road." "We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize," Ewanick said in a statement. "In the meantime, people who are really worried about the Mayan calendar coming true should buy a Silverado right away." We asked Ford for a comment, and have yet to hear back; we'll update when we do. But all of this will be over sometime in the first quarter of the game when the Silverado ad is set to air, and where the Giants and the Patriots will settle their scores on the field. Ford spokesman Mike Levine tells Motoramic Ford did send a letter to Chevy asking the ad be pulled, saying Ford disagreed with several of GM's claims, "particularly around durability." Levine also said GM's "longest-lasting" claims were belied by Ford having more trucks on the road with 250,000 miles or more than any other make. "Claims are made in advertising frequently by every auto manufacturer," Levine said. "This type of ad protest happens from time to time...We'll always defend our products." Levine added that any decision about what to do after the ad airs would be left to Ford's legal team. The reply also came as Ford marketing chief Jim Farley told reporters in Las Vegas that he regretted not joining the 11 other automakers in building a big ad around the game -- but that even if Ford had done so, it wouldn't have bought ad time.
That commercial was so fucking hilarious. I loved it. [editline]6th February 2012[/editline] ford can suck a dick btw, their trucks suck.
To be fair, I snickered at the "Longest-lasting most dependable truck" comment.
that ad is gold
That commercial was so fucking hilarious. I loved it.
I cracked up when [sp]one of the survivors had a box of twinkies in his arm[/sp] Also boo hoo Ford, it's a commercial, it's not supposed to be nice to you, or be exactly truthful.
"Dave Drove a Ford..." "Twinkie?" :v:
To be fair, I snickered at the "Longest-lasting most dependable truck" comment.
Yup
Also, I just noticed in the photo I posted - there are "Don't Touch" signs. Why? It's not like it'll break or anything.
Toyota trucks are indestructible, it's a fact.
My family has a toyota truck from the '80 at my island cottage. It's doors came from two different trucks, we rebuilt the back with wood and attached a crane, it has more dented bits in it that straight bits, it rolled down a hill and smashed into a tree, and had to survive me as a toddler . And it still runs without a problem. It's one of these, I think.
I tried to watch it, but the video caused my PC to BSOD. Sign of an impending PC-apocalypse? Nah, I'm using an HP.
That commercial was so fucking hilarious. I loved it. [editline]6th February 2012[/editline] ford can suck a dick btw, their trucks suck.
They still manage to be better than other trucks lately and still are the best selling trucks by far (from what I've heard, I haven't personally looked up the statistics)
I do think the ad was a bit of a cheap shot. Everyone knows Chrysler products would be the ones most likely to not work after an apocalypse. Hell, they barely work now. Ford and Chevy are equal to me. I'd be happy in a Silverado or an F150, doesn't matter to me.
ford can suck a dick btw, their trucks suck.
Then explain how the hell I've gotten 300,000 miles out of one without rebuilding it. It starts first try every try, it stays running, it tracks straight, it stops on command, it runs beautifully, it doesn't leak or burn anything it isn't supposed to, and it never shuts off until I tell it to. It acts like a damn Honda. Now hurry up with your enlightened opinion. I've got stuff to do, cargo to haul, gasoline to burn.
They still manage to be better than other trucks lately and still are the best selling trucks by far (from what I've heard, I haven't personally looked up the statistics)
They only sell so much because they're cheap as fuck, and because every construction company ever uses them. And WHAT are they better at that say, a chevy, or a dodge doesn't do better?

"Everyone worried about the the Myan apocalypse should buy a silverado right now!" Lold pretty hard at that
Okay, that ad's awesome. Should've shown some other things that would survive the apocalypse, too. Like cockroaches. And Nintendo products.

I fucking love Toyotas.
I love this kind of auto ads, except the one in the OP is a jab at a specific company, instead of rest of the competition. Also here's one by Audi.
Yup
Loved that episode
That commercial was so fucking hilarious. I loved it. [editline]6th February 2012[/editline] ford can suck a dick btw, their trucks suck.
Pssh... Chevy's aren't real trucks. F-150's have one of the strongest truck frames out there. Instead of just bolting the frame together like most truck brands do, Ford bolts and welds their frames. Great for towing and hauling. I'm standing by it, Max.
They only sell so much because they're cheap as fuck, and because every construction company ever uses them. And WHAT are they better at that say, a chevy, or a dodge doesn't do better?
All the companies that I personally have seen that use Ford trucks have ones from 1995-2003 using the 7.3l Powerstroke Diesel. These days, trucks are pretty much the same. The only difference I'm aware of is, last I knew, Ford was still using solid front axles on the Super Duty trucks. I don't know about anyone else, but I hate trucks that have an IFS, unless they are 2wd. I haven't really liked any trucks newer than 2003, but if I had to get a new truck, I'd get an F-250 or F-350 Diesel. [editline]6th February 2012[/editline]
Something about your username...
Believe it or not, I'm a Chevy guy. I own a Chevy and the next truck I will probably be buying is a 73-79 Chevy, or a 95-97 Ford with a PowerStroke Diesel. That's less likely though, I don't have enough money for one.
Commercial was awesome! Zombieland Twinkie reference anyone?
They only sell so much because they're cheap as fuck
Excuse me, but no. A model as comparable to my '85 as possible, which means it's absolutely loaded inside but it comes with the base engine, 2WD with open rear diff, and overdrive gearing, comes in at 35 thousand fucking dollars. THAT'S NOT CHEAP! Matter of fact, it's a couple thousand MORE than a comparable Silverado.
and because every construction company ever uses them.
I see it split evenly between Ford and Chevy where I am. A few oddjobs try to use Dodges, but I always see a Ford or Chevy on the site as well.
And WHAT are they better at that say, a chevy, or a dodge doesn't do better?
As I already mentioned, I feel Ford and Chevy are equal, but against Dodge? How about actually functioning? My family has been through three Mopars in two years and none of them were any good. All of them had major problems. One misfired like crazy and had horrible body rot, one had the bellhousing explode and ran rough, and the third has electrical issues and, suprise surprise, a misfire/bad gearbox. Fords? My '85 F150: Bought for $500 with 200K seven years ago. Still runs flawlessly to this day, now at 300K. Dad's old '84 F150: Bought brand new, got 200,000 miles out of it, he blew the engine by overrevving it. And by blew, I mean "It knocked for ten seconds on startup and then purred like brand new". He sold it and the guy that bought it drove the fuckin' thing away. Our current '84 F150: Bought with 175,000 on it, running just fine right now. Nearing 200K. 2003 Ranger XLT: Bought new, ran FLAWLESSLY for 72,000 miles. then my mom put it in a ditch and wrote it off one winter. 1988 Thunderbird Turbocoupe: Sold at 212,000 miles because the ABS module went stupid and made it impossible to stop. Pedal was hard as a rock. Ran fine until then. 1984 Thunderbird: Ran fine, sold to buy the '88. 1997 Explorer: 200,000 miles, just bought it, runs like a fucking top. Really, the only Ford we've ever had trouble with was an '84 F250, and that was a farm abused beast that I called as dying before my parents ever bought it.
or a 95-97 Ford with a PowerStroke Diesel.
Please don't. The powerstroke is a boat anchor. Get the 460 gas V8 instead, should be available in that year range if I remember correctly.
I love this kind of auto ads, except the one in the OP is a jab at a specific company, instead of rest of the competition. Also here's one by Audi.
i'll take the chopsticks
Please don't. The powerstroke is a boat anchor. Get the 460 gas V8 instead, should be available in that year range if I remember correctly.
You would have to be moronic to think something like that. My father has owned two Powerstrokes so far (first was a '95 and second is a '00) and both have had over 250k miles with no issues. The '95 was sold with 265k+ miles (my father wanted a newer one) and it was replaced with the '00 which currently has 253k miles and has had no issues. The '00 gets around 20mpg, while a 460 gas would get around 8mpg (my cousin's 93 with the 460 gets ~5mpg, however it runs a bit rough anyways)
They only sell so much because they're cheap as fuck, and because every construction company ever uses them. And WHAT are they better at that say, a chevy, or a dodge doesn't do better?
You sound like a highschool redneck with a hard on for Chevys. Its really not that big of a difference between the two brands. My 2005 F150 has not had any mechanical problems for as long as Iv had it. And my 79 Chevy still runs, granted its kind of dangerous to go above 50 in it.
I cracked up when [sp]one of the survivors had a box of twinkies in his arm[/sp] Also boo hoo Ford, it's a commercial, it's not supposed to be nice to you, or be exactly truthful.
Making statements like that about your own vehicles can be misleading if they're not true and may lead to consumer lawsuits. Purposely jabbing another company without evidence will almost ALWAYS result in a lawsuit. Why? Libel. Free speech only goes so far, you can't talk shit without at least probable cause.
i'll take the chopsticks
Why? There is literally no advantage to using them over a fork.
Chevy does have the best ads, they're just creative when it comes to this stuff. Is it just me, or are media tags broken?
