• Freshwater fish in Mexico sports a penis with 4 hooks. Evolutionary step to help mate with females.
A male fish from Mexico has some fearsome genitalia. Equipped with four hooks, the male's sex parts might allow him to grab onto a resistant female during mating, researchers say. The freshwater llanos mosquitofish, or Gambusia quadruncus, was described this month in the Journal of Fish Biology by a team led by researcher Brian Langerhans of North Carolina State University. Langerhans explained that the male's hooked genitals may be a counter-response to the female's own defenses against undesirable mates."Typically, reproduction is more costly in females, so females favor ways of reducing mating with 'lower quality' males, but reproduction is cheap in males and so selection favors ways of mating with as many females as possible," Langerhans said in a statement. Females of this species have evolved to have a big ball of tissue that blocks most of the genital pore. This means the female would have to deliberately allow the male to mate with her unless the male evolved a counter-response, Langerhans explained. The four-hooked genitalia could help the males overcome resistance and latch onto a female's genital pore and deposit sperm inside her. (Fertilization in the Gambusia genus takes place inside the female's body and she gives birth to live young.) Strange as it seems, such hooks aren't unheard of. Another new species (Phallostethuscuulong) that was recently discovered in Vietnam sports sex parts that jut out of its head and are equipped with a rod and a jagged hook to clasp the female during mating. The researchers who described that fish in a July edition of the journal Zootaxa similarly said hooking onto his mate probably helps ensure the male's fertilization success. The females have a colorful spot on their anus that seems to indicate the location of the female's genital pore, reproductive status and species. The latter could reduce cross-breeding, Langerhans said. "So it may be thatG. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids," he said in a statement.
Give her the hook

so at some point in this guy's life he decided to dedicate his time to researching fish dicks
It looks like some kind of decorative knife I want one
It looks like some kind of decorative knife I want one
There'll be a dildo of it soon enough. Sounds like something a James Bond villain would have in his hideout.
I'll take twenty
was unaware that evolution was gender relevant also. That's pretty awesome.

Maybe it should evolve some social skills instead of raping female fish jeez.
I wouldn't like to put this fish stick in my mouth

I don't like fish sticks anymore
evolution is weird with animal's naughty bits. Male ducks evolved to have corkscrew penises.
It's a common misconception, you don't have to rate him dumb for it.
Let's fix it by ignoring it yeah that works better
I want such fish. I'll name him Captain Hook.
the male's sex parts might allow him to grab onto a resistant female during mating,
I've got to wonder, would this evolutionary trait be necessary if sex wasn't painful for them?
I wouldn't be surprised if these fish got hooked on sex
Let's fix it by ignoring it yeah that works better
Jesus, you can correct him but he's not dumb. [editline]29th September 2012[/editline]
I've got to wonder, would this evolutionary trait be necessary if sex wasn't painful for them?
A male animal is in the business of screwing everything it meets. If I impregnate one female it does not significantly detract from my ability to impregnate ten others that same day. Females however must be selective. If I'm going to carry babies for the next two months, expending energy and nutrients on them, they better be worth the effort and not likely to die in the first day. As such, the daddy better not be a pile of shit. This is why you commonly see males fighting over females, and not so much the other way around.
Puns, puns everywhere.
