• Kim Jong Un says North Korea has hydrogen bomb
(CNN)State media indicated Thursday that North Korea has added the hydrogen bomb to its arsenal, a development that, if true, would represent an upgrade to its nuclear weapons capabilities. Observers in recent years believed that North Korea may have been working toward -- but didn't yet have the capability to produce -- a thermonuclear bomb, which can be hundreds of times more powerful than an atomic bomb. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made the claim, according to state media outlet KCNA, while touring a historic weapons industry site in the country. The reclusive communist country has been turned "into a powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate [a] self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty and the dignity of the nation," Kim said, according to the KCNA report.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/10/asia/north-korea-thermonuclear-claim/
Now just to build a rocket to carry it far enough that it doesn't destroy half the country.
I would assume not utterly alienating themselves from 90% of the international community would be more beneficial than dumping resources into nuclear armaments but hey, that's just me.

It acts like a social status of sorts, Kim sees it as the "quick fix" to many of their problems, regardless of how long it takes him to get there.

Pretty sure china won't stand for this, they didn't like a nuclear north Korea, they certainly won't like a thermonuclear north Korea even more, plus it makes xi look weak to have allowed their not so good neighbor to now threaten china and its interests

Who would've thought?
I'll believe it when they test a bomb with a few hundred kilotonnes yield, until then it's bullshit. Though maybe they will test it with the new excavations they've been making at their test site. There isn't much they can do to make it worse at this stage.
North Korea also says it has a drink that makes you immortal, I'll believe it when the data comes in.
North Korea also believes that unicorns are real.
Is there any definitive proof that they have a nuclear bomb? Let alone a hydrogen bomb.
Is there any definitive proof that they have a nuclear bomb? Let alone a hydrogen bomb.
It's very likely. Otherwise, they've detonated the three biggest non-nuclear explosions in history as part of a massive operation to dupe the world.
Is there any definitive proof that they have a nuclear bomb? Let alone a hydrogen bomb.
The three tests they did would be pretty good proof. My personal opinion was that the low yields were due to them wanting to build miniaturised primaries for thermonuclear weapons rather than fuckups on their part.

They're going to deliver it in a carriage pulled by unicorns.
NK is like the fat kid at school that tries to bully people and says he has the coolest toys at home.
That's cute.

Once you have the plutonium core its easier to scale up hydrogen bombs than atomic bombs. Im sure detonating such a huge weapon would be their new way of grabbing attention if they dont manage to wipe out all of korea.

A lot of the fuel in some of the biggest thermonukes is actually the depleted uranium damper. They could do an underground test but it would set off an earthquake. I doubt a lot of north korean soil is even being used.
That's cute.
It actually isn't. Remember it's a nuke that not directed at the US. But it;s a clear statement that they can be a pretty serious danger to SK, Japan and surrounding countries. That's the point of those nuclear buildups. MAD or Little MAD in this case still applies. You do not want to bring a nuclear power to edge where they are willing to use the nuke on a friendly target.
By hydrogen bomb I assume they mean they filled a tank with hydrogen and set it on fire
By hydrogen bomb I assume they mean they filled a tank with hydrogen and set it on fire
The bombs tested at bikini atoll are hydrogen bombs, the nuke explodes and then ignites the hydrogen that then amplifies the explosion. At bikini they found out accidentally how big an explosion can be, the russians saw this as a threat and built the tzar bomba however its a fraction of its original design and this causes fallout to fall on countries and change some weather for that year.

My bet is all they have is a canister of compressed hydrogen gas
Updated OP with article
My bet is all they have is a canister of compressed hydrogen gas
"General, what is this next to this computer?" "Dear Leader, its a can of compressed gas to clean-" "Compressed gas?! It's a hydrogen bomb! Call the media, we will display our vast destructive power to the west!"

That's where it gets a lot of its energy from, the actual fissile component mostly sets things in motion. :v:
