Controversy as David Cameron calls Britain a 'Christian country' - while 65% are 'non-religious'

Religious groups have backed Prime Minister David Cameron's assertion Britain is "a Christian country".
He said the UK must be "more confident" about its Christianity, a view Downing Street says he has stated before.
Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told BBC Radio 4's Today programme it was "not factually accurate" to call Britain a Christian country.
He said a YouGov poll found 65% of people questioned described themselves as "not religious", while 29% said they were.

I believe Britain has a strong Christian heritage but as a Christian I most certainly don't believe the nation of Britain today is a Christian one.
doesn't Britain have a state religion? or is that old news?

Technically it does, in reality though; no.

We do but i'm always slightly surprised when i come across someone who is openly religious.
I'm very happy with not having politicians being obliged to be religious or at least pander to the church.

Historically? Its a been mix of Pagan and Christian moulded together. Britain has always been known as a very mysterious and mythological country, even by the Romans.
what is it with cameron and his jesus-boner recently
David Cameron is forgetting the Druids.
Lots of people just tick the CoE box on their census just because their family are or because they're not sure. Who knows what the number of actual believers really is...
He's probably lost a lot of the younger vote now.
I don't think Obama would say something like this, even in the U.S.
We had exactly the same debate with the same fucking words in Germany a few months back, so idiotic.
-snip-
Is it me or... is he loosing it a bit?

He's been reflecting a lot recently on how religion helped him when his son died.
This wouldn't be controversial if he's said he was a Muslim.
All this does is alienate everyone in the country who is not christian I don't see why any modern country in this day and age would want to tie its self to a religion especially the UK.
The UK is starting to become more and more a multicultural country and this is nothing more than giving the finger to other religions and non religious people. To be honest in a country like the UK it is practically offensive to say something like this now.

do you seriously legitimately think all those ukip and bnp voters would settle for a Muslim prime minister
someone would get stabbed or shot or something

lmao yes it would, more than half the country would go fucking apeshit

Why don't you make the comparison fair and contemplate what would happen if he said it was a muslim country.
didnt he say the exact same thing a couple of years ago?
Is he the new Hitler?

Gay marriage was passed pretty recently, so he needs to make up with the church and the christian population.
That's my guess at least.

He's trying to appeal to the young conservatives, sadly it was their nap time when he said it and the nurse won't let them listen to radio as some of them still think Churchill is prime minister.

This, there's like no reason to say something like this.
When I lived in England for about half a year, it seemed as if the younger population is mostly non-religious, while the middle-aged to older population has a larger proportion. Obviously that's only from my experience and not necessarily representative of everywhere.
You also have to take into account that the 65% statistic is taken from an online poll on YouGov, which is a relatively inaccurate way to represent the UK as a whole. An online poll only reaches a relatively small demographic (internet users who frequent YouGov). It also probably leaves out most of the older population.
I belive he's referring to christian norms and morals, rather than participating christians.

He's pandering to the hardcore religious-right. Remember, he had a lot of shit from them over his push to legalise gay marriage. Now that he's losing support from his traditional voters/MPs to Ukip, he's in full panic mode.

It's Easter.
Both this 'Christian country' comment and the 'Jesus invented the Big Society' thing were parts of Cameron's Easter messages.
Just look at how punchable that cunt is though.
