This is the problem with bitcoin, the second you try to turn $12m BTC into "real" money the BTC value will plummet. The value only works if you are using it for trading between people with BTC.
It doesn't have to be BTC though, it could be anything. Its just a bartering system at the end of the day.

Firstly, they weren't entrusting drug dealers with their money like a bank. The site was acting as an escrow service, holding money temporarily to ensure both parties have satisfied their ends of the deal before releasing funds.

Secondly, part of the problem here is unavoidably the Bitcoin protocol itself. It's essentially cash, once you send it you have no recourse if you don't get it back. That's why the site was operating as escrow in the first place, but if you can't even trust a marketplace, how are you supposed to do business? Okay, so you keep it locally, and do direct transactions- and then what do you do when the seller just pockets your money and leaves? The whole point of websites like this is to be safer than those one-on-one transactions.

It's trivially easy for any company using Bitcoin to run off with whatever funds they've been entrusted with. No physical presence, no paper trail, no consumer protection, no nothing.
