Health and safety Christmas tree vandalised
Vandals have sabotaged a town's controversial traffic cone Christmas tree after 4,000 people joined a Facebook campaign calling for it to be axed.
The artificial tree, which is covered in green Astro-turf and has no branches or decorations, caused anger among local when it was announced it would be replacing the traditional Norway fir due to health and safety reasons.
The 33ft tall tree, which cost £14,000 and has been likened to a witch's hat and something out of Doctor Who, was chosen instead of a real tree this year because it is less likely to topple over in high winds.
However, locals are demanding the tree in the main shopping precinct in Poole, Dorset, should be removed.
Now vandals have climbed the fake pyramid tree to strip it of several green mats piecing it together, leaving the wire mesh cone framework exposed.
Police are now hunting the culprits and studying CCTV footage.
Critics have threatened to burn it down or take a chainsaw to it after flooding the social networking site Facebook with angry messages.
One group that has been set up is called 'We don't care about health and safety, Poole needs a proper Christmas tree' and has been inundated with 3,250 members.
Another called "The Poole Xmas tree looks horrible and like a green traffic cone" has attracted a further 700.
Users have described it as "a travesty", "a very poor excuse for a tree" and "ridiculous and making Poole a laughing stock".
Richard Randle-Jones, the town centre manager whose idea it was to bring in the cone tree, said the police have been informed of the damage to it.
He said: "It is Britain's highest-profile tree but it has become so high-profile that it's become a target. It's a shame because the children love it.
"It's obviously been climbed by someone.
"We're checking CCTV footage. It's criminal damage and we have reported it to the police.
"It will be good if we can catch those responsible and make them pay for it."
The cone tree was bought by the Poole Town Centre Management Board, which is partly funded by Poole Borough Council.
They claim that local businesses and residents wanted the traditional tree replaced because the guy ropes that keep it up and the barriers put up around it looked ugly.
Mr Randle-Jones admitted that they will reconsider using the cone tree for next Christmas.
Wow. People in Poole take their Christmas trees extremely seriously.
I think it looks neat. Not a good replacement for a REAL Christmas tree, but it's still cool looking.
"was chosen instead of a real tree this year because it is less likely to topple over in high winds."
Is it so goddamn hard to keep a tree upright? You know, there is some place where the trees stay upright in almost every wind apart from a hurricane. What is that... Oh yeah a forest.
Rebar the goddamn tree or something if you can't keep it upright otherwise.
England has pooey health and safety poo
Any pictures of it post-vandalism?
Christmas cones look outstandingly lame
Seriously, it's not even an attempt to mimic a proper goddamn tree
Although vandalism isn't usually a good thing, that tree definitely had it coming.
-snip- source.

The fuck, it looked fine. I was expecting something that literally looked liked several traffic cones with a bit of astroturf thrown over it not a giant tree.
It's better than what there is in my town centre. It's a skeletal cone with Christmas lights on it, doesn't even have any covering. The smaller town just West of here has a proper one! Buggers.
Looks bland and boring.
Why do we have to steer away from the natural and have this peice of shit plastic choking hazard.

I think that it's stupid to cut down a tree just to put lights and plastic shit on it for few weeks, then throwing it out as a waste problem.
Wait - topple over in high winds?
It looks surrounded on all sides.... :sigh:
I would have done the same. Christmas cones blow.

Oh sorry.
But the traffic cone thing ain't created out of borrowed door mats and springs stolen from pens either.

Pretty stupid to buy/haul a chunk of expensive granite/marble, have your name carved into it and stick it into the ground above your corpse in the graveyard too :downs:

Someone who has this
I was wondering why we had these kinds of trees in our town center... It's fucking stupid.
Seriously, If trees are so dangerous to the general public then why the fuck do they have regular trees dotted around town?
Fuck health and safety, they need a good beating.

Me.
THIS JUST IN:
All forests throughout Britain have been replaced with plastic alternatives to stop them falling over in the wind.
The one in my local town collapsed, I saw it happen on my way to school. If the tree now wants to fall down it has a choice between the Methodist Church, the market or another tree to hit.

Well a rock lasts forever, and it isn't the lungs of our planet and shit. Just saying that we could make useful items out of it, at least recycle it properly after xmas.
Well a rock lasts forever.
Hahahah no.
lungs of our planet
They plant more trees as soon as they cut them down you idiot.

Huh I thought that a piece of rock lasts virtually forever... at least buildings like Colosseum are still there after few thousand years.
And not always you dumbass.

Would you like to see the tree in the middle of the day?
..
That is not a Christmas tree. Nobody in their right mind would use it as a Christmas tree.
THIS is what you use for a Christmas tree
