good thing I did not follow the advice of certain facepunchers I will not mention.
AMD Ahoy.
AMD is just leaning back in their chairs and smiling
AMD :smug:
I bought AMD's stock 5 days ago. :smug:

A similar phenomenom halted the sales of the first Phenom chips... Looks like the tides of the battle have turned

To bad that won't make their processors any better.
What processors does this effect? I haven't heard of Cougar Point before this.

Fuck
It's only certain motherboards, and it doesn't affect the SATA 3 ports, or the 0 and 1 ports of SATA 2. All in all, not really as big a deal as the article makes it out to be.
Well for the consumer at least. I guess companies wouldn't want to send out faulty products and that'd stall some sales...
And it doesn't cause the drives themselves to malfunction, the data just stops being transfered. If you plug one of the drives into a working port, the data would still be there.

It's pretty much essential for Intel to fix the problem now, which is why it's such a big deal. Within three years, it's estimated that ~5% of those motherboard affected will have a failure relating to this problem in additional to general hardware failure and since Intel are fully aware of the fault they would liable to replace the broken hardware even if it is no longer in production. By halting distribution and fixing the issue now they save themselves and their customers a huge headache in the near future, even if it is going to cost them up to $700 million.

according to The Guardian:
The chipmaker Intel has halted shipments of hardware incorporating its new "Sandy Bridge" processors and says it will have to spend a total of $1bn (£600m) fixing a fault
I read this on Anandtech:
It also committed to setting aside $700 million to deal with the repair and replacement of any affected chipsets.
But let's just say it's going to cost a lot of money.

And yet the performance isn't that much better than an i7.
I doubt they consider it that much of a threat.
I probably didn't read it throughly what was the bug?

True, but the price is.

Seriously, it's not a long article.
"It is chipsets that work with two versions of the Sandy Bridge processors that have been found to be faulty. If left in place, the chipsets could cause hard drives or other storage devices to malfunction."
My dad's new custom build has a sandy bridge. I would tell him about this but he gets a new computer about every 2 years so hopefully he won't get any problems. Unless it's only prebuilds, he used a motherboard by Gigabyte if that helps.
